Hi

I've commented on this topic before in this group and my experience is different than most of the current responders.  This topic gets about the same attention as anchors.  I find it curious that the cost/benefit equation being used for solar panels does not include the $10,000 arch installed in the stern.

We installed an Air Breeze windgen (with aftermarket propellers) just above our radar on the mizzen.  In 15 kts it generates 10-12 amps as long as the wind keeps blowing.

Our solar panels do not rotate to follow the sun so they only produce measurable amps 6 hours a day in cloudless skies.  We've almost completed a circumnavigation and we've seen an awful lot of cloudy days and we've been in a lot of anchorages where the wind blows all day and all night.

Our Air Breeze is very quiet.  When we are in an anchorage, it seems we can hear everyone else's windgen but not our own.  The Air Breeze has a ground switch that acts as a brake and allows us to hoist the mizzen stay sail without incident.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about our windgen.

20-40 psi is the correct range. This is adjustable +/- 5 psi.

There are several good YouTube videos showing the adjustments...be sure to check them out.

around 12 Ah a day as an average is not very impressive at all, our 450 from Emek gives on average 80 Ah per day and good days over 100 Ah, the 200 w on the rail gives "only" just over 15Ah per day.I think they more often get in shadow, and it's regulator "slow" them down when batteries reaching 95% or above but the regulator for the 450 W arc continues to give full blast more or less. so compared with that, a wind generator does not give much, I'm surprised about the low figures you mention. At 12 knots a superwind should give ca 24 Ah 24 h, and during 2 h at 20 knots wind should give 15 Ah. But more interesting than the average is what does it give days when solar does not give much such as rainy murky days? And as you Bill I do not like to run the diesel generator when sailing or anchored closed to others.
I have two spare 100 watt flexible light weight solar cells I was planing to put on the canvas bimini, but the canvas man said it's not a good idea, you will get chafe, and water/moister between the canvas and the Solar cell, the chafe I believe could be sorted out with chafe protection, but the moister issue might be more difficult to solve. Does anyone have any experience with light weight solar panels on top of the bimini or spray hood?

An other interesting thing with solar panels, they give surprisingly much even cloudy days. the lowest we got from the 450 w panels have been 28 Ah during the two month we have had the Victron MPPT controller, that was a cloudy and rainy day

Without Gary Silver and your help, I could not have done it. So first a big thank to both of you!

I will need to improve it, as I did not show the replacement of the 2 foam seals on the bow thruster foot.
Also I should cut it in sections, to make it more low bandwidth friendly…

Also, the last time, it was much easier to add the bearings.

I just added the new specifications on the neoprene foam seal and the seal.

Thanks for your suggestions. Finally the foot is
out!!!!!!I used a chain wrench, a hammer, Amel tool and the
help of a mechanic. Now I have to change the oil (SAE90????)
and 3 new neoprene washers. Who should I order the 3 foam
seals? Does anyone have the email address  of Amel AV

Also, regarding your parts list. Amel has changed the foam seals to all 3 seals being Neoprene foam seal 110x60. The Natural Foam that was used inside is now Neoprene foam. You may want to update your parts list to reflect this change.

My experience is they will last about 6-8 years...my experience with the original two. I think you should replace them in pairs...I did not, but that is another story. Do not over-spec the thrust...they are rated at N400. There is no maintenance on these except to keep them clean.

It is easy to bend one of these if you close the lid improperly. The proper way to close is to press down on the middle of the engine room lid.

I am glad that you were able to find swift and competent care for what must be an excruciating injury.  Thank you for sharing this cautionary tale.  I will certainly take even more care when operating the engine room hatch.  

One of my gas struts had been stepped on by an over-eager Yanmar technician and I had to replace it.  I found that after replacement of the strut that the hatch gave a much more controlled closure than before it got bent.  I think that these struts may need to be replaced on some regular schedule.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to how long they should last?

Bill,

Check your bow thruster propeller. A blade may be cracked. It may have barnacles. It may have line entangled...even monofilament.

It will sound different between Port and Starboard thrusts.

My experience is they will last about 6-8 years...my experience with the original two. I think you should replace them in pairs...I did not, but that is another story. Do not over-spec the thrust...they are rated at N400. There is no maintenance on these except to keep them clean.

It is easy to bend one of these if you close the lid improperly. The proper way to close is to press down on the middle of the engine room lid.

Thanks for your suggestions. Finally the foot is out!!!!!!I used a chain wrench, a hammer, Amel tool and the help of a mechanic. Now I have to change the oil (SAE90????) and 3 new neoprene washers. Who should I order the 3 foam seals? Does anyone have the email address  of Amel AV France?

First, this is a follow up to Eric (SM2K #376 Kimberlite) on the question of “my” location of the sewing machine.
And how (based on “my” current experience), I decided to secure it.
In my humble experience, it started to slide when accidentally exceeding 35 degree heel.
I believe my new 1 inch (2.5 cm) Webbing will solve this issue.
(A second Webbing would not hurt… people can decide for themselves).

Since I was posting that information, I thought It might be usefull to post what “I” decided to do for the Forward Cabin, Pilot Berth and Aft Cabin.
Again, this is based on “my” personal experience, with “my” personal need, and in no way is a suggestion to what Amel owners should to.
If interested I will be glad to explain how some item can be relocated and where to make available the pilot berth, etc.

Please note that “all” heavy items are mainly hold/secure in place by the (forward cabin, pilot berth and aft cabin) Leeboards.
The 1” Webbing is used to hold in place additional light items such as cushion, luggages, etc.

My first concern was to not alter the look of my Amel.
For the forward cabin, I also had to take in consideration the Leeboard (which I always use, but not every one does).

M2K No. 350 came from
the Amel factory with two anchors in twin bow rollers with
two 1200 watt windlasses.


The starboard anchor
setup is the exact same as any other SM.  We have all
chain.


The port anchor setup is
a French anchor similar to a Danforth.  The windlass gypsy
is horizontal and sits above deck and the motor sits below
decks.  We have 10 meters of new chain and 90 of new rope
that we replaced in 2012 because the old rope, even though
it looked unused, was all stiff and the end was oxidised
into the chain.  


We have never deployed
this second anchor.
