Yes, but crazing will not polish out...only discoloring.

SM Masthead Wind Transducer-Raymarine ST-60

Jim Anderson

On SM384 I have Raymarine ST-60 sailing instruments. Five years ago my masthead wind speed/direction transducer was damaged and I hired a rigger to replace it. There is a "long" model and a "short" model. The "short" model was used. Despite numerous calibration and bias settings and setup maneuvers per the instructions, done a couple of times per year, it has never consistently worked correctly, especially when sailing a wind angle going upwind. The transducer is mounted on the port side of the top of the mast; it points straight forward. Does anyone know whether Amel specifies the "Long" or the "Short" transducer, and if the transducer is supposed to point straight forward?
Thanks,
Jim

The Alternator is a Valdo from Turkey (60A 24v), it was on the boat when we bought hear, I assume it's the original one as the 12 v alternator also is a Valdo (60A 12V).
The problem I think is that we have a "dump" regulator and not a smart one, the only smart regulator I have found in Greece are the Sterling one, which I have heard mixed verdict about, so hesitate to purchase one.
I had the alternator overlooked at a local workshop who cleaned it and change the bearing etc, he said it work fine. what does mean?, he could not supply any smart regulator unfortunately. now it  start to charge at 1800 rpm and give good amps at least in the beginning. If I reduce rpm it still charge but Amps goes down rather quick. We have had rather good charge rate on our batteries most of the time as we have the solar panels, but still it should start to charge at least at 1300 rpm.

Paul the amps has to go down; because that is an intelligent system since 80 Years . Your batteries are full! Periode! Learn more to google it ; alternator...
smart regulator gives you more input during the time the voltage is under 27.8 volt, them any regulator stops charching your bat. makes sens
Valdo is french

So glad to hear that this story had a happy ending.  My Maramu has a lighter engine hatch than the SM but lacks the gas struts.  I was wondering if anyone has looked into upgrading the engine hatch on the Maramu to utilize the gas struts?  I rather like my toes and the wife’s too!

Best,

James

Sorry to read about your injury.  May it fully heal with as little pain as possible.

We got new struts from Amel in La Rochelle last year, as the starboard side one had just failed a few days before our arrival.  The new ones are all nice and shiny in silver; the old ones were black with just the pistons being silver.

Yep. It does sound complex.  One sizing  error and you may be stuck with piece you cannot use.  No joy.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Alternator pulley

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Paul,

Did the supplier assure you that the alternator is an isolated ground alternator?

What is the country of origin? If China, forget about it...in my opinion.

The pulley size is critical because RPMs for your motor RPM gauge come from the engine's 12VDC alternator.

The alternator is 50Amp and is identical in every other way, you will however have to exchange your pulley from your old alternator to the new alternator in order for it to have the correct rotation speed as the volvo alternators also drive the tachometer reading and the pUlley speed is critical for an accurate reading. So the pulley must match your engine. The genuine volvo alternator would also need your pulley exchanging as they also do not come with the correct pulley fitted.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I am very surprised that a replacement alternator, even a genuine Volvo one, comes with the wrong pulley wheel attached!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Gas struts for engine room hatch

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Bill,

I now understand what you mean by the 10 mm thickness!!! Around the R8.0 !!!

I no longer have the previous gas strut (which I don’t know if the were original), but on them was written:

RIVEN
588539.00
213601.00004
F1=400N 299/99

I don’t know what it means (except for the 400 newton), I sent it at the time to Bansbach.

As always thanks for the help, precision on understanding the specs!

Alex,
If you look at the drawing you
posted you omitted the end piece specifications which is
R8.0 thickness 10 for each end, diameter of the hole in the
end which is 8.2mm, and length of the end piece which is
20mm from hole center to pushrod. I think that all of these
are correct, except thickness, which I believe should be 8
or 9mm.
Take another look at
your drawing at http://nikimat.com/engine_room_hatch_gas_strut.html.
There are 12 specifications listed on that drawing...and
each is variable. In addition, there is one more
specification which is the force...it should be
N400.
So, there are 13
different variable specifications when ordering these. It is
not a simple task to get correct. My friend, another SM
owner got it mostly correct. I had to drill the end holes
because he ordered 8mm, and it needed to be larger...your
drawing shoes 8.2mm, and I think that is correct. Also, like
you, my friend ordered 10mm thickness for the ends, but the
original Amel strut was 8mm thick. I had to modify some
things and it almost did not fit.
If you still have an old strut and
you know it is original, compare it to all of the specs on
your drawing.
It is
more complicated than you think, and sometimes we get
lucky!
Best,
Bill

Bow Thruster and issue with broken blade with a non-branded propeller

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Bill Maffei,

There could be several reasons for the propeller rubbing against the tube when bursting to Port, but remember the tolerance is very close, and bursts will cause a lateral force one way or the other...any lateral play, will temporarily relocate the propeller slightly and momentarily.

My guess in order of probability for the lateral play of the propeller:
  1. The pin through the hub could have worn a bigger hole in the hub
  2. The screws could have worked loose, or stretched
  3. The thruster propeller shaft bearings need replacing
And, of course, non-branded propeller may have been a little off in dimension or, flex's when lateral thrust is applied.

Good luck on your propeller replacement...service it every two years.

Bill

So Bill, I believe I know what I need to do when I haul out in 2 weeks. Wondering a) if you know of a reason why the prop is rubbing against the thruster shaft while giving port bursts? b) before I contact Maud do you know the cost of a new “Amel” thruster propeller? You did and awesome job on your last service of my thruster! She is dry as a bone and works flawlessly… obviously up until this point but I don’t consider that a bad thing considering the time between services. Also, considering 2 prop blades brought me and my family in safely, without incident while getting tossed around in 20+ knots of breeze. :) Cheers and as always thanks for your help.

Yes,

2 outside, 1 inside.

Consequently I strongly suggest 2 on the foot as Amel originally designed it.

Thanks again friends!! I ordered new foam seals.
But now, given what read here,I have to put two or three
foam seals on bow thruster shaft of my Santorin?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Bow thruster (HAHA)

Ian,

I am sure that you know that when everything is perfect, the bow thruster sounds differently between Port and Starboard. This is the way that the reversible pitched 3-blade propeller sounds and operates.

Hi Bill , we also have different noises on our bow thruster . Amel Guadeloupe had done some work on it and then they were concerned about the different noises in case they had reassembled something incorrectly
. They took the leg off and stripped it down on the bench but found everything to be O K . That was 7 years ago . It still sings a different song on port and starboard but has worked perfectly ever since .

Hey everyone -

This is not the standard bow thruster question on the forum...

My bow thruster is working just fine however, I noticed today that while using port bursts it sounds a bit louder than it usually does. Starboard bursts sound as they always do. Performance is the same. There seems to be a bit more vibration during the port burst but not the starboard bursts. I have not had a chance to look at it yet, will do tomorrow just wondering if anyone had the same experience/solution. Maybe the propeller needs replacing?

P.S. I saw Ipanema sail past me in Boston Harbor today and she looked fantastic!!!

Thanks,

I don't own a Santorin, I own a Super Maramu, I assume they are similar.
Consequently I strongly suggest 2 on the foot as Amel originally designed it.
And 1 inside.
if you have not seen it yet, here illustration of Gary & Bill instruction:

Thanks again friends!! I ordered new foam seals.
But now, given what read here,I have to put two or three
foam seals on bow thruster shaft of my Santorin?
