Kent, yes. Thinking over what Bill said, it occurred to me that in Amel's theory the use of both poles together would nullify each other's push. Makes sense. It has been stated repeatedly on this forum that one is better of when not meddling with or contradicting any of old Amel's instructions. When in Rome... So I will explore two possibilities: using the main boom as a pole for the genoa (very optional and in moderate wind force) and/or installing a running backstay so as to add strenght on the wind side of the mast. Or just using both poles as they are, and getting used to rig them correctly and easily.

Interesting…  That is not in the version of the SM 2K manual I have.  No date or version number I can find to compare.

The thinking might be that in theory the loads of the two poles cancel each other out. In theory.   But watching the twin headsails in practice, especially when sailing in a significant seaway, the loads are cyclical and the sheets load up alternately. The heavier load shifts from one side to the other.  I am not at all convinced that in practice the load cancelling would be real except in flat water.

The hinge consists of a long pintle that is incorporated into the fiberglass along the forward edge of the platform and the gudgeons are two stainless steel eyes that are attached to stainless steel brackets that conform to the outer edge of the hull in the stern.  These brackets are placed just above the rubber bumper on the stern. I know that many of us sail wing on wing with the genoa on a pole and the main. However, keep in mind that the Amel Super Maramu owners manual says not to do this. It instructs us to only use both poles together, not only one.  Perhaps Olivier can shed some light on this for us.

Charles,

I think the Secteur Blac people are giving you an answer without thinking.  

A standard whisker pole would exert no more lateral force on the mast than the Amel pole. It does the same thing, so the forces are the same. Certainly the attachment fittings at the shrouds do not carry any part of the thrust load from the Amel poles.  If I wanted to use standard whisker poles I would not hesitate to install them.

But…

Are you sure you are setting up the Amel poles correctly?  Has an experienced Amel sailor showed you how to rig them?  I only ask because I find them MUCH easier to use and rig than the standard whisker pole I have used on my past boats.  When set up as intended, they are very simple to handle, even for someone working alone. If you find them too heavy, you might be able to replace the aluminum sections with a carbon fiber tube and cut the weight dramatically.

Great, I am glad that Patrick has been helping you. - he is good.

I used to have Pantaenius through Scott, but switched to Falvey when I purchased my Amel last year. I have yet to see how they will respond to my explosion issues. Hopefully today they will give me authorization to proceed. This is my first claim ever.

Look forward to see you if you are in the yard. I am still on the hard unfortunately as I wait for the repairs to begin and get my new engine running - still waiting for Volvo parts and the exhaust hookup. I keep pushing, but it is really frustrating getting the local contractors moving.

I was surprised yesterday morning when a Electrical engineer , a surveyor , and Patrick all showed up at my house to look at my boat .  I had only had one brief conversation with Patrick , I was surprised Pantaenius included him in the process ,surprised they sent so many qualified men to survey the damage . Patrick seemed to very knowledgable , and I will have him do the repairs . I will take my boat to Bert Jabin's in Annapolis  where your boat is , so may see you there . I will say , so far I have been pleased with Pantaenius's response and my broker, Scott Stusek has been helpful resolving issues.

I cannot say whether he understands the Amel systems directly, but I do trust his expertise on electrical systems and instruments in general. I do remember discussing the Amel isolated ground philosophy. He is a strong proponent of a common AC/DC ground, which I think is a bit different.

His knowledge of DC distribution systems is quite good, as is his understanding of the instruments. He is going to do a complete systems checkout once the new batteries are in and running. I will try to work with him as much as possible.

Thanks for the advice. I am not sure what others have but I have the Mastervolt 24V alternator and it has an external smart regulator. I need to read up on it, but presumably it could handle any type of AGM batteries, since that is what I had with the Intimidators. I know my Morningstar MPPT solar regulator is set for AGM. The boat came with the original Dolphin 100A and a replacement Charles 45A, which is what I use when I am plugged in. Again, I know it is set to AGM. I am not sure about the Dolphin, since I was rarely on generator power and even then the Charles seems to do the trick.

I am going to discuss all with my electrician after my insurance company approves the repairs. My insurance wants a thorough test of the entire electrical system, and my electrician is the one who added the fuse systems that protect all the feeders from the battery compartment - there are I think 10 fuses on the wall just downstream of the main cutoff switches. I do not have a fuse in the 12V starter/alternator feeder to the engine. By the way, one of the 24V fuses blew when the explosion happened. It may have been a fire if I did not have that fuse installed - who knows. Thank goodness there was no fire.

Still no final statement from the surveyor the insurance company hired as to what caused the explosion.

Thanks for the advice. I am not sure what others have but I have the Mastervolt 24V alternator and it has an external smart regulator. I need to read up on it, but presumably it could handle any type of AGM batteries, since that is what I had with the Intimidators. I know my Morningstar MPPT solar regulator is set for AGM. The boat came with the original Dolphin 100A and a replacement Charles 45A, which is what I use when I am plugged in. Again, I know it is set to AGM. I am not sure about the Dolphin, since I was rarely on generator power and even then the Charles seems to do the trick.

I am going to discuss all with my electrician after my insurance company approves the repairs. My insurance wants a thorough test of the entire electrical system, and my electrician is the one who added the fuse systems that protect all the feeders from the battery compartment - there are I think 10 fuses on the wall just downstream of the main cutoff switches. I do not have a fuse in the 12V starter/alternator feeder to the engine. By the way, one of the 24V fuses blew when the explosion happened. It may have been a fire if I did not have that fuse installed - who knows. Thank goodness there was no fire.

Still no final statement from the surveyor the insurance company hired as to what caused the explosion.

Agree with Bill's comments.  In our case, we had to re-program both Mastervolt chargers for AGM charging and add external Mastervolt regulation to the factory Leece-Neville alternator, also properly programmed for AGM charging.

Hello Amel Friends,
I inquired whether it would be feasible to install a mast pole for the genoa on my Maramu. I was told by the "Secteur Blanc" people (they  do the rigging for the Chantiers Amel at La Rochelle)  that the mast on the Amel  boats could not sustain enough lateral push to be so equipped. I did see a Maramu with a mast pole though. I wish I could avoid the complicated, cumbersome and heavy poles the Maramu comes with. I used them once or twice but find them almost impossible to rig when sailing solo. Also I got injured  when doing it last time.
Any good advice?

Hi Eamonn,

I was unable to remove any of the flat head machine screws from the outhaul tracks.  After breaking the heads of the first two (the heads split at the slot with not much force, they are very brittle), I tried several more but with even less force.  None budged.

My guess is that your painters broke many of the bolts trying to get them out.  Too bad they didn't save at least one of each.

Sorry I couldn't help you.  Unless someone with a newer boat can get them out to measure, you can probably get them from Amel.  Contact Maud at sav"at"Amel"dot"fr   I believe the plant closes for the entire month of August, so it's probably best to call as well (+33 5 46 55 00 75) if you are going to need them before late September.

If you can confirm sizes, a good source for fasteners of all kinds in the US is McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com)

No I still do not know the size of the bolts.  I heard they are about 8mm.  But I did not realize that there were different sizes on the 2 booms.  It would be great if you could figure out the size or type from a hardware store.
