Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] illustration of the Basic Maintenance of the Lofrans Tigres Windlass

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good afternoon Hanspeter,

I put grease on the main shaft, and even on the gipsy parts.
Since I am a fairly new owner, this is why I ask other owner to comment:

My owner manual (which is the 2nd to last link) called called: Lofrans Tigres (and other) installation, operation & maintenance program (.pdf 1.0 mb)
says on page 4:
2. Grease the outer rotation parts . Particularly the main shaft thread and the clutch cones.
You can see the complete maintenance schedule Lofrans recommend on this link.

Sincerely, Alexandre

I really would like the more experience owners to look

(too

much grease, etc.) and correct me.

Since I purchase my vessel (end of 2012) I had never

serviced the windlass… Why?

because I don’t use it much and gave priority to other

systems that i use all the time.

Consequently some parts were very difficult to extract.

Now that I am familiar with it, I will definitely service
it

on a regular basis (starting every 3 months).

I believe this will be much easier and quicker.

This also helped me to understand better how my windlass

works.

I did read the manual, and that is why I know that you should grease the cone. The following is a copy of the manual in English. Like I said previously, I have had discussion with people who are not aware of this.

Below are indicated the operations and the period we consider essential to get the best efficiency and performance of your anchor windlass.
1. Clean all the outer surfaces and the hidden points with fresh water and remove the salt layer.
2. Grease the outer rotation parts . Particularly the main shaft thread and the clutch cones. Check for evidences of corrosion and stress.
3. Check the terminals of the electric motor and the Control Box. Test the drop of tension at the terminals.
4. Check the rotation and the speed of the electric motor. If it runs slowly check the electric motor brushes and clean with abrasive paper. Replace when necessary.
5. Replace of the all outer seals. The geabox is proper filled with SAE 90 long life oil.
6. Remove the windlass from the deck to clean the salt under the basement.

If you do not have a copy of the Lofrans manual, you can download a copy here:

Best,

Bill

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] illustration of the Basic Maintenance of the Lofrans Tigres Windlass

Glad all looks ok Bill,

I “guess” if the windlass manufacturers did not want the possibility of the cone to slip, they would have bold them together…
Mine definitely did not slip before…

It was interesting as i put my new Rocna anchor on, then pull the chain up, as it was slipping, so I just tight the wing nut, this is also how I realize the emergency handle is a perfect fit to tight the wing nut as well 1) giving leverage 2) keeping hands at a safe distance.

Sincerely, Alexandre

When I looked at your photo
documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded
it.
I have had several
discussions with people that don't believe that the cone
should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I
always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy
loads.

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

For the new owners like myself who are intimidated by
maintenance task they have never done performed, I
illustrated the “Basic maintenance” of the Lofrans
Tigres Windlass.

I really would like the more experience owners to look at
the document and make sure I did not make any mistake (too
much grease, etc.) and correct me.

Since I purchase my vessel (end of 2012) I had never
serviced the windlass… Why?

because I don’t use it much and gave priority to other
systems that i use all the time.

Consequently some parts were very difficult to extract.

Now that I am familiar with it, I will definitely service it
on a regular basis (starting every 3 months).

I believe this will be much easier and quicker.

This also helped me to understand better how my windlass
works.

Here is the link:

For low bandwidth user, the document is split in 5 sections.

If bandwidth is not an issue, there is also the full version
(58 pictures).

Re: Flying the foc d'artimon and trinquette on Maramu 46

Alan Leslie

The foc d'artimon/mizzen staysail/mizzen ballooner....
Tack is on the u bolt in front of the dodger.
The peak on the halyard from the front of the mizzen mast
put a block on the eye bolt on the aft gunwale on the side you want the sheet
run the sheet outside the rail to the block and then  back to a winch
Haul it up the mizzen mast et voila

Trinquette/staysail...depends on what configuration you have
Inner forestays were not standard on Amel boats
We have a furler with a staysail on it but not tracks for the sheet blocks, we use snatch blocks
Some have tracks on the deck along side the cabin top
maybe you have a stay you can attach and a hank on staysail ??

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Super Maramu FRIENDSHIP II Hull #415 From San Francisco

Mark Pitt

I know that boat.  It was launched about the same time as my Super Maramu "Sabbatical III" and the owner, Bob Stewart from San Francisco, was finishing the one week orientation with Olivier Beaute at about the time that my wife and I started it (October 2003).  He was also in the ARC 2003 with me and the last that I saw of him and the boat was in the Caribbean in early 2004.  The only other biographical fact that I can remember is that he was in "real estate."  I hope that he is OK.

I saw a terrible sight today! Located at Coral Cove Marina, Trinidad in the secured hard storage area is FRIENDSHIP II, Super Maramu Red Line Hull #415 with a homeport of San Francisco. It has been on the hard since 2008 and is rotting and molding in place. There is even mold on the spreaders. What once was an all-boat cover is in shreds. According to locals nobody has visited this boat since it was placed on the hard in 2008. I was also told that someone is paying for storage.

Does anyone know anything about this boat. I have photos for the owner or an interested party.

When I looked at your photo documentary, I saw nothing out of line. I downloaded it.

I have had several discussions with people that don't believe that the cone should be greased because that will cause it to slip. I always say, exactly, it is supposed to slip under heavy loads.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Super Maramu FRIENDSHIP II Hull #415 From San Francisco

Agreed.

There were 3 people by that name that died in the US in and around 2008-9 according to the list that I found, but none of them lived in CA as their last address.  This still is a plausible explanation, and perhaps some of the family members are keeping the storage up.  Hopefully you can find her a new owner.

Best,
James

I have no first hand knowledge, but a bit of googling and a search of the USCG Vessel Documentation database indicates that “Friendship II” is (was?) owned by someone named Robert M. Stewart, and the USCG documentation hasn’t been renewed since 2008. With no current document, I couldn’t find an address.   Looks like he might be from in or around San Jose, CA.

Re: Head-Holding tank ball valve replacement

Craig Briggs

Hi Duane,
Actually, to replace you'll have to remove and then reinstall the fiberglass structure that is around the valve base and deal with the through hull assembly.  If you can simply unscrew the to part you'll have a much easier project - the insides can be replaces with new, if that seems appropriate after you take it apart.  You may have to cut back a bit of fiberglass to take it apart, but it is still much easier.
Good luck with it.

Flying the foc d'artimon and trinquette on Maramu 46

Graham Cresswell <grahamjcresswell@...>

Yet another display of my ignorance but here goes...

To save me re-inventing two wheels, would anyone be able to advise me the best configurations for flying the mizzen staysail and the trinquette.

In particular, I'd value opinions on the best attachment points for the tacks and how people generally route the sheets.

Many thanks in advance

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow truster vibration

The boat has been at the doc for quiet some time. Barnacle build up possibly? Equipment malfunction? Dried sticky seals?

When we tried to retract it, it was intermittent.

If I do purchase it a complete overall will be done and then maybe a final answer.

And yes the inside starboard hull was chewed up as well. I couldn't get a clean image of it but could feel inside.

Trevor, You may have nailed it , almost sure you did. The light did not go on in the down position , but I thought it was the result of a lightning strike that had blown out a fan and other lights , the buzzer also did not come on. I had  my wife look to see if the thruster went down when activated and it did , but she may not have realized it  was not down all the way. I also noticed scuffing  on the edge of the hull opening on the starboard side. I now wished I had ordered a new prop . Did you determine why the thruster did not extend all the way down ?
Thanks Again,

Mate,

I just observed a survey on a Santorin for a possible purchase. Same thing occurred. Once it was out of the water we could see that it had not fully deployed downward. One direction of thrust pushes the prop away from the hull and the other direction pulls it toward the hull. The vibration was the grinding of the prop against the inside of the hull. It chewed up the edges of the blades pretty well.

The bow thruster had a small play (not tight fitting) that allowed it to wiggle port to starboard, just slightly.

When we grabbed the housing and pulled downward it fell a few inches into the bottom position.  Once back in the water the vibration was gone. Though we could hear it shift from port to starboard by changing thrust dir ection.

A few things as a possible owner I took note on:

1. The housing will need to be built back up so that the outer diameter of the bow thruster glides smoothly inside the hull - there was an area on the forward starboard edge that was visibly worn down.

2. This unit has no visual indicator at the helm station letting you know it is fully extended or retracted - poor mans choice is to simply go have a look inside the fwd cabin and inspect if it has fully deployed prior to engaging the prop.

Hope this helps,

Trevor

Alexandre, That was my thought too . When the prop was trying to pull away from the hub it could oscillate , being pushed against the hub it would not. It may be that , and it contributed to what Trevor just posted. I am very anxious to see if this is the case and may drive down to Annapolis just to find out.
Thanks,
Pat

Just a guess:
when you are going to Port it is ok, but if you are going to starboard you have the noise and vibration.
If this is the case, I would guess that the “hub” is getting old and stats to look like pictures 4 and 5 on this link
http://nikimat.com/bow_thruster_lost_propeller.html
You will see, the red arrow pointing to the hole that, with age, become wider.

So (if I am right) why not making noise going to Port, because the propeller is pushing the foot of the bow thruster, while going starboard it is pulling on the hub, etc.

Please keep us posted as what you find!

Personally I carry lots of spare hubs, prop, etc...
