Ed,

Having owned a Maramu that the previous owner was into for close to 250k when I bought it for substantially less, I'd advise caution about buying a basket case in the Caribbean. That's not a good place to undertake a major refit. Unless you're experienced and have extensive yacht refit experience under your belt, you'll be far better served buying a boat that's been well maintained and equipped.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Upgrading all electronics

Hello Stephanie. Here is some information I hope you will find to be helpful. When replacing electronics, be sure to remind the technician that Amel boats have a full-floating/full earth return DC electrical system. This is critical to know and understand this as to install certain components including but not limited to voltage transformers and the like in a conventional manner will cause problems in the future which can evolve into serious challenges.

The clothes washer dryer and the dishwasher are not sold in the United States and there is no support for them here. The closest support can be found in the French Caribbean Islands and possibly through Amel in Martinique. That particular dishwasher is no longer manufactured and many of the spares are very difficult to obtain. The “brain” that controls all functions is not available anywhere. I have two electrical engineers attempting to ‘reverse engineer’ a replacement without luck so far. These appliances cannot tolerate American 60 cycle  240 volt electricity for even a nanosecond as it will ‘cook’ the brain instantly. As a European I am sure you are aware of this and I include this information for others reading who may not have this information.

Good luck with your refit.

Have fun with your Amel, Joel

Hi All!

SM Indecent is on the hard in West Palm Beach to have all of her electronics replaced. All were original to 2002, so 14 years service is noble! I would also like to take this opportunity to have her washer /dryer and dishwasher serviced. Can anyone recommend a service in the Fort Lauderdale - West Palm Beach that does this? Many thanks.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Super Maramu FRIENDSHIP II Hull #415 From San Francisco

Bill Kinney <greatketch@...>

I’ll second Bill R’s comment.

If you want to go sailing, buy a boat ready to sail.  There are lots of them out there, even if you have to look hard for one to match your desires and budget. The amount of money, effort, and time it takes to rehabilitate a tired old boat is ALWAYS much more than predicted.  Just maintaining a boat in good condition is expensive.  A good rule of thumb is to expect to spend annually between 3 and 5% of the value of the boat as it it were NEW on today’s market—NOT it’s value on the used market.  For an Amel SM, that would be something between k$20 and k$30 on average for an ownership cost budget number just to keep it in good shape on an ongoing basis.

On the other hand there are people who enjoy the process of rebuilding something.  If that is your joy, then have at it!  I look at it like the person who picks up an antique car that has been rusting out in the farmer’s field and spends countless hours and dollars restoring it. That purchase wasn’t made to acquire a car for cheap! Do not think a boat would be any different.

Choose your avocation.  If your goal is to sail: Buy a sailing boat.  If you want to rebuild a boat: Buy a project boat.  But those two goals rarely go together in a happy way.

Another topic vaguely related to this one…  Think about what happens to your boat if something happens to you.  For most of us a large and expensive boat will be more of a burden than a gift to family members.  Planning ahead and setting up something might save your loved ones a whole lot of trouble.

Hi Bill,
It always stirs our curiosity when we find an abandoned house..or boat, it seems like there should be a story associated with it.  It's sad though when it is something as well thought out and constructed like an Amel.  If you can post some pictures.  Maybe the boatyard will let you know who is paying the bills...someone has spent a bit to keep her there for the last eight years...and we all know there is someone else out there that would care for her better than time and the elements.

FYI

I failed to do #6 and YIKES!

When I arrived in Martinque I discovered the build up of salt had cracked the base.  But I'm betting it hadn't been removed from the deck for over 30 years.

Re: Flying the foc d'artimon and trinquette on Maramu 46

Hi Graham,

On our Maramu, there is a loop on the deck just forward of the main traveler.  That is the attachment point for the wire stay which on the mizzen sail should extend about two feet beyond the tack of the sail so the sail clears the main sheet.  We run the sheet outside the shrouds to the stern where we run it through a block at the top of a stanchion and a block at the bottom of the stanchion then to the stern winch.

In this configuration you will quickly note that the mizzen has to come down to tack.  Thus we only use it in long reaches.  It does add about a knot to our boat speed in wind 8-12 knots.  Beyond 12 knots we don't bother.  Finally, in a point of sail beyond a broad reach it becomes ineffective as it steals wind from the main.

Hope this helps.

Alexandre,
   I have been servicing
various windlasses for 40 years and have used grease on the
cones and shafts of all of them lest they tend to seize up
rather quickly.  Regular maintenance is important as the
grease gets squeezed out and washed off so a hydrophobic
grease seems to work the best.  I have normally used the
white lithiums only because they tend to stain the deck and
sails less.  The best white lithium that I have come across
for this application (and winches/turnbuckles as well) is
the Vari-prop grease.  I think that you have been getting
some excellent advice already, so just adding my own 2
cents.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Super Maramu FRIENDSHIP II Hull #415 From San Francisco

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good morning Ed,

Welcome to the group!
I understand the appeal for Friendship II as a project boat.
I am far from an “expert”, but in my opinion, a vessel that has not run in 8 years will end up costing way more than one in working condition.
Engine, generator, all the pumps (air conditioning, fresh water, anchor wash, water maker), etc. will need to be rebuild if not beyond repair…
So if you are on a tight budget, I personally don’t think this would be a good boat.
You also should have a look at Bill cost spreadsheet on the Super Maramu, and this is for one that has always been meticulously maintained…

3 years ago, I met a Mango owner that purchased a project, the vessel was beautifully renovated, but he said he spent 3 times the cost of one in good running condition…

The Maramu is definitely an excellent boat and being smaller will cost significantly less.
Just my opinion.

Looking forward to have you as an owner!
Very smart to be part of the forum prior to your purchase.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Everyone

We joined this amazing group a few weeks ago as we are
looking at Maramus as a strong possibility for us to take
our young family on a world cruise. With a fairly tight
budget I'm quite keen on a project so would love to find
out more about Friendship II. It's amazing what you guys
found out about the owner so quickly. Any pointers on how I
might proceed would be great.

Many thanks

Ed

I also have a sock on the mizzen ballooner and it is so easy to use even single handling.

I totally agree with Ann-Sofie!
Add a sock to the mizzen ballooner
and you will use it more.
BTW, when asked by others about
that sail, we call it a "secret
sail."

Yep the MARAMU is a great all around boat. The sail plan mix can and does suit any conditions. We did two Atlantic crossing in flat seas and force 11 and the boat did just fine.

Graham,

Alan has given a pretty clear description. I do have an older rig than you but on my Maramu the tack of the foc d'artimon also goes to the U bolt on the deck in front of the dodger, the halyard is on the port side of the mizzen and the sail sheets in via blocks on the aft quarter. Obviously only for off the wind sailing when you won't need to change tack as it gets in the way of the boom.

The trinquette, in my understanding, can be a staysail or a smaller hank-on genoa, suitable for strong winds. On Popeye the trinquette is the latter and hanks on to the solent stay. The tack goes to the deck fitting with a short wire or strop to keep the foot of the sail above the guardrails, the halyard comes down on the port side of the mast, and the sail sheets in using the genoa sheet blocks. If you aren't sure what a solent stay is, it's an additional removable wire stay that is just inside the forestay and attached to the mast just under the forestay. It doesn't need extra running backstay support as it attaches so close to the top of the mast. Most of the time the bottom end attaches to the toerail near the shrouds with a pelican hook and it has a special heavy duty windable fitting to give it tension when connected up for use.

My trinquette also has one set of reefing points like a slab reefing mainsail and is heavy cloth so it can be used with a smaller area. It is useful in winds above 30kts or prolonged beating where a roller reefed genoa would have a baggy shape. I have just recently been using it whilst the genoa was having the UV strip repaired and have used it before when there was a problem with the roller furler. A solent stay also gives peace of mind that there is a backup if the forestay has a problem. I have always assumed it was factory fitted when the boat was new.

I totally agree with Ann-Sofie!

Add a sock to the mizzen ballooner and you will use it more.

BTW, when asked by others about that sail, we call it a "secret sail."

The foc d'artimon/mizzen staysail/mizzen ballooner....

Tack is on the u bolt in front of the dodger.
The peak on the halyard from the front of the mizzen mast
put a block on the eye bolt on the aft gunwale on the side you want the sheet
run the sheet outside the rail to the block and then  back to a winch
Haul it up the mizzen mast et voila

Trinquette/staysail...depends on what configuration you have
Inner forestays were not standard on Amel boats
We have a furler with a staysail on it but not tracks for the sheet blocks, we use snatch blocks
Some have tracks on the deck along side the cabin top
maybe you have a stay you can attach and a hank on staysail ??

Cheers

Re: Super Maramu FRIENDSHIP II Hull #415 From San Francisco

Hi Everyone

We joined this amazing group a few weeks ago as we are looking at Maramus as a strong possibility for us to take our young family on a world cruise. With a fairly tight budget I'm quite keen on a project so would love to find out more about Friendship II. It's amazing what you guys found out about the owner so quickly. Any pointers on how I might proceed would be great.

Many thanks
