Hi Duane.
Those are for the power to the winch motors (big wires).  The breaker on the 24v panel (icon looks like a joy stick) powers the switch panel at the helm for all the winches, the windlass, and the anchor wash.  I'm sure that those switches and the ones on the coaming go to relays for each motor, which then power the winch motors.  There are two electrical boxes up there that probably contain the relays, but I'm not on the boat now.  Hoping someone knows for sure where the relays are and what kind of relays so I can order them from home.  If I just know for sure where they are I can get someone to go aboard and identify what kind they are.

If I'm wrong about how the switches work, please someone let me know.

If I'm right, and the relay is stuck in the closed position, then a failed switch could cause a runaway winch.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question.  There is a breaker for the mainsail winch and the stbd winch above the midcabin birth, and a breaker in the engine room for the port winch.  They are not controlled by the 24 volt panel in the galley.

Hi all.
I hope everyone is having trouble-free fun.

Having owned a Maramu that the previous owner was into for close to 250k when I bought it for substantially less, I'd advise caution about buying a basket case in the Caribbean. That's not a good place to undertake a major refit. Unless you're experienced and have extensive yacht refit experience under your belt, you'll be far better served buying a boat that's been well maintained and equipped.

Hello Stephanie. Here is some information I hope you will find to be helpful. When replacing electronics, be sure to remind the technician that Amel boats have a full-floating/full earth return DC electrical system. This is critical to know and understand this as to install certain components including but not limited to voltage transformers and the like in a conventional manner will cause problems in the future which can evolve into serious challenges.

 

The clothes washer dryer and the dishwasher are not sold in the United States and there is no support for them here. The closest support can be found in the French Caribbean Islands and possibly through Amel in Martinique. That particular dishwasher is no longer manufactured and many of the spares are very difficult to obtain. The “brain” that controls all functions is not available anywhere. I have two electrical engineers attempting to ‘reverse engineer’ a replacement without luck so far. These appliances cannot tolerate American 60 cycle  240 volt electricity for even a nanosecond as it will ‘cook’ the brain instantly. As a European I am sure you are aware of this and I include this information for others reading who may not have this information.

I’ll second Bill R’s comment.  

If you want to go sailing, buy a boat ready to sail.  There are lots of them out there, even if you have to look hard for one to match your desires and budget. The amount of money, effort, and time it takes to rehabilitate a tired old boat is ALWAYS much more than predicted.  Just maintaining a boat in good condition is expensive.  A good rule of thumb is to expect to spend annually between 3 and 5% of the value of the boat as it it were NEW on today’s market—NOT it’s value on the used market.  For an Amel SM, that would be something between k$20 and k$30 on average for an ownership cost budget number just to keep it in good shape on an ongoing basis.

On the other hand there are people who enjoy the process of rebuilding something.  If that is your joy, then have at it!  I look at it like the person who picks up an antique car that has been rusting out in the farmer’s field and spends countless hours and dollars restoring it. That purchase wasn’t made to acquire a car for cheap! Do not think a boat would be any different.

Choose your avocation.  If your goal is to sail: Buy a sailing boat.  If you want to rebuild a boat: Buy a project boat.  But those two goals rarely go together in a happy way.

Another topic vaguely related to this one…  Think about what happens to your boat if something happens to you.  For most of us a large and expensive boat will be more of a burden than a gift to family members.  Planning ahead and setting up something might save your loved ones a whole lot of trouble.

Hi Graham,

On our Maramu, there is a loop on the deck just forward of the main traveler.  That is the attachment point for the wire stay which on the mizzen sail should extend about two feet beyond the tack of the sail so the sail clears the main sheet.  We run the sheet outside the shrouds to the stern where we run it through a block at the top of a stanchion and a block at the bottom of the stanchion then to the stern winch.

In this configuration you will quickly note that the mizzen has to come down to tack.  Thus we only use it in long reaches.  It does add about a knot to our boat speed in wind 8-12 knots.  Beyond 12 knots we don't bother.  Finally, in a point of sail beyond a broad reach it becomes ineffective as it steals wind from the main.

   I have been servicing
various windlasses for 40 years and have used grease on the
cones and shafts of all of them lest they tend to seize up
rather quickly.  Regular maintenance is important as the
grease gets squeezed out and washed off so a hydrophobic
grease seems to work the best.  I have normally used the
white lithiums only because they tend to stain the deck and
sails less.  The best white lithium that I have come across
for this application (and winches/turnbuckles as well) is
the Vari-prop grease.  I think that you have been getting
some excellent advice already, so just adding my own 2
cents.

I really would like the more
experience owners to look
at

the document and make sure I did
not make any mistake
(too

much grease, etc.) and correct
me.  







Since I purchase my vessel (end
of 2012) I had never

serviced the windlass…
Why?  



because I don’t use it much and
gave priority to other

systems that i use all the
time.  



Consequently some parts were very
difficult to extract. 








Now that I am familiar with it, I
will definitely service
it

on a regular basis (starting
every 3 months).  



I believe this will be much
easier and quicker.

better how my windlass

Good morning Ed,

Welcome to the group!
I understand the appeal for Friendship II as a project boat.
I am far from an “expert”, but in my opinion, a vessel that has not run in 8 years will end up costing way more than one in working condition.
Engine, generator, all the pumps (air conditioning, fresh water, anchor wash, water maker), etc. will need to be rebuild if not beyond repair…
So if you are on a tight budget, I personally don’t think this would be a good boat.
You also should have a look at Bill cost spreadsheet on the Super Maramu, and this is for one that has always been meticulously maintained…

3 years ago, I met a Mango owner that purchased a project, the vessel was beautifully renovated, but he said he spent 3 times the cost of one in good running condition…

The Maramu is definitely an excellent boat and being smaller will cost significantly less.
Just my opinion.
