Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Dealing with m. Selo, ss anchor, shipping problems, logos, ets

It's interesting about the anchor. I have had problems
with it dragging, but not more than one would expect with a CQR. Generally I would say "satisfactory". However, the shank bent in strong/shifting winds and that was a surprise; I wouldn't have expected it. Dealing with m. Selo, ss anchor, shipping problems, logos, ets
pagandaisy <no_reply@...>
Just back from a passage from Tortola to Grenada on a new Doyle
jenny. Very competitively priced, it replaced my delaminated original sail. A very good sail indeed! Doyle, in the Caribbean is a pleasure to deal with. As to logos as someone else stated, don't let the kids play in the engine compartment. But I'd like to know if on the newer SM's the cushions are still velcroed into place: a terrible situation in the dining area. Any suggestions for an improvement. Also, after almost eight years when the only maintenance on my watermaker, even after absences of as long as 6 months, was a weekly rinse (with no ill effects)the person watching my boat pickled the membranes. He states I should run 1/2 hr with the tap in the galley open before using the water. It would seem to me rinsing for some length of time would be sufficient. Comments please. I don't understand how anyone could have any problems dealing with m. Selo. I've been doing so for as long as I've had Amel's, almost 20 years, with nothing but first class service. I shipped over a large crate of equipment when having Pagan built. Also no problem. Just ship as Amel tells you to. About that stainless steel anchor (assuming it's the same one I got 8 years ago): I couldn't get it to hold in La Coruna. The first time I used it in the Caribbean it dragged. The second time it hung up on a rock and bent. Obviously I knew what to do with it. Friends who know the anchor universally refer to it as "The Slippery Anchor." To those of you in the Caribbean predictions are for 5 large hurricanes this year (as if you didn't know already). Yes, Grenada is a good place to leave your boat--much better than the hard.) Arnold

Re: Legos on board

HI I have a 5 year old daughter who finds ways to drop almost
anything that is in her hands. As long as they dont play in the engine room there is no way to clog the bildge pump. The cockpit scuppers are so big that most legos will be washed overboard. I would worry more about the woodwork and apolstery. Wich cleans up nicely. Chuck and I are getting down to the niity-gritty now that we take
delivery of our boat in 6 months...Has anyone had experience with legos on board (yes, the children's building toy)? we know they can clog bilges on other boats but before we deny our boys one of their favorite pastimes, we thought we'd check with other owners. Also, any experiences with shipping "stuff" (equipment, tools, personal items) to La Rochelle? Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Tabitha S/V Revelation

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] New SM 2000
Anne-Sophie Schmitt <nearlynothing@...>
The SM is a wonderful boat, fast and able in almost
all sea conditions. I can't compare it to the Santorin, but compared to the Maramu it sails consistently faster--in fact from the moment you have 12-15 kts of wind the SM just seems to fix 8 kts or better boatspeed--and does not slow through waves. It does take a great deal more spray! But, there is one thing: I found the Gateff factory sails poorly cut, unacceptably so. I have had them re-cut, which is a temporary fix. This boat deserves really good sails and that will be next, probably Doyle, maybe North. I really like the way Doyle cuts sails, but in the past there were durability issues with Doyle inappropriate to a cruising boat. --- Krassopoulos Dimitris <dkra@pcsystems.gr> wrote: Dear All, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Anchor
Anne-Sophie Schmitt <nearlynothing@...>
The CQR gives satisfactory to very good holding in
most bottom conditions. I carry a Bruce as a back-up or stern anchor, with 100 meters of line and 10 meters of chain. In 95% of all situations the supplied anchor will do the job well. The supplied chain (50 meters) is short for my taste. I would favor 75 meters at least and accept the bow weight penalty. I know many anchor 3:1 on chain. I favor 5:1 if I have any doubt about conditions, or 4:1 otherwise. Bob and Laurie Wright:
We ordered the gasket that you are referring to from Amel and had no problems with customs, etc. Language barrier was not an issue as we dealt with all communications via email... Did as Joel's wife instructed us to do. She gave great advice just like Joel. The only thing I would say is order enough for two refits as the shipping was more than the gasket. The gasket was about 45.00 US but the shipping was 90.00 US Fed Ex. But we couldn"t find anything similar in our research here in US. Installation was easy! And it works just like it's supposed to. No water leaks! Delores & Gene Carter

Anchor
Dimitrios Krassopoulos <dkra@...>
Dear All;
As I am going to be in Hyeres next week to take my SM2000 I want to know if the stailless steel anchor they provide has good holding. Can you help me on that? I was asking for a Delta but I was convinced that the 35 Kg CQR is sufficient. How long is the chain they supply? What do you think? Should I ask for something that can be done during the training period? Dimitris

Hello Bob and Laurie,

I am all but 101% sure that the rubber seal strip used at the base of the companionway slide board is the same one today on the Super Maramu, as it was on the Maramu. If you describe it as above when inquiring of Amel, they will know what it is. You can email your request to Colette at amel@amel.fr in the Apres Vende Department. She speaks English at least as well as I do. An alternate source would be a GOOD automotive trim/upholstery shop. I have seen window seal strips (such as on my 1996 Chevy Impala) that look very much like what you seek. Good hunting. Joel F. Potter Cruising Yacht Specialist Amel's Sole Associate for the Americas

Any idea of where to get the same or similar gasket, short of trying to deal directly with Amel? New SM 2000
Krassopoulos Dimitris <dkra@...>
Dear All,
We were the owner of an Amel Santorin by name " Aeolian Fantasy" and we are going to take delivery of a New SM 2000 in Hyeres next week. The name of the boat is "ALMA LIBRE". If you wish you can see our web site www.almalibre.gr <http://www.almalibre.gr> to find out more about us. I am very interested to receive information from previous Santorin owners that have upgraded to the SM 2000 . Is it really sailing better? We were extremely happy with the Santorin and I am anxious to know how much better the SM is. Regards Dimitrios Krassopoulos Athens-Greece

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Roller furling grease leak
Joel F. Potter <jfpottercys@...>
Dear Michael,
The roller furling headstay extrusion is packed with grease when first installed. What you are seeing is this grease finding it's way out of the bottom of the extrusion. It's quite common. There is enough grease in the extrusion to last approximately five years. Coincidentally, you should take the entire rig down every five years for maintenance and a through inspection. Many insurance companies are now requiring replacement of the standing rigging every ten years and a take down inspection every five years. It's just a good idea. Unless you notice a marked decrease in performance of your furling, I'm sure your problem is as I have described and, other than being messy, it's not really a problem. Best Regards, Joel F. My SM 2000 has developed what looks like a grease leak beneath the furling motor for the genny. It appears as black spots under the motor on the forestay. I suspect a failing seal of some type. Before I open up the genny furling motor, does anyone have any sage advice or similar experiences. Thanks Michael Glass "Second Call" mglass@rapplaw.com West Islip, NY

Yes under the battery switch actual forward towards the bow. I
glassed a support into the stringer and removed the insulation to located battery box next to bulkhead. I look forward to your report on running the new propane line. How did you mount the bottles in the back locker? Have you found a solution to the rub rail oxidization problem? Fairwinds --- In amelyachtowners@y..., wbs9971@a... wrote: Thanks for the response. The VHF antenna vanished. The charge went through the fuses, cooked the VHF radio, radar (it was smoking) and other electronics that were on and then silvered the fuses. Lights on below: cooked. A friend was at the wheel (fortunately covered in leather). His hair stood on end. Fortunately neither the engine nor seacocks were affected. Seeing the storm coming I took in the sails and dropped a copper plate attached to a chain overboard, wrapping the chain around the mast. I don't believe it had any purposeful effect. Subsequently I read everything available and checked all the advertised protective devices, had conversations with so called experts. Over the years I've spoken to a dozen people who have been struck. My conclusion: I was lucky. My advice: disconnect all electronics, if possible unplug them. At the very least disconnect at the circuit breakers. If possible shut down your engine. Put your battery switches on disconnect. Hang a copper plate overboard via a chain rather than a wire. Who knows, maybe mine helped. If your wheel's not insulated, do so. Need I say get as far away from the mast(s) and rigging as possible. If I were building a boat from scratch I'd seriously consider using Marlon seacocks. I suspect that Amel's stepping the mast on the deck, and the chain plates not being connected to the keel kept significant current from getting to the seacocks and engine. Just a guess. Fortunately there are not as many thunder ststorms in the Caribbean as in Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake. If anyone out there has any useful suggestions I'd be happy to learn them.
