Hi Alex,
Yes those are the joker valves, I was asking Ian about the anti siphon valves, which he says are on the intake hose.  I don't have the siphon loop, but on Kristy the intake (thru-hull) for the forward head and anchor wash is in the passageway between the head and the hanging locker.

Hmmm.  That's on the intake side, the joker valves being on the output side.  I have a strainer between the stopcock and the pump.  I'll have to look to see if it has a one way valve as well.

I have made a practice of filling the head with fresh water every few months or when ever I  leave the boat for a week or more, and putting some vegetable oil in before flushing it down.  I read somewhere that it helps keep the joker valves supple.  I also ask the crew to flush for a good 10 seconds after using the head to get all debris and urine out of the discharge pipe.  I have to change joker valves about twice a year with this regimen.

On the hose from the sea cock. It is usual to have a loop in the flexible pipe taking it above the heeled water line. There is usually  plastic 'u' bend clamped on to the up and down pipes to form the u shape. This bend should have a small screw cap (like a car tyres valve). Inside is a tiny rubber non return valve. It allows air into the pipework to prevent the motion of the boat pumping sea water back up the pipe until it siphons back into the toilet.

Hi Alexandre,
on Super Maramus with holding tank there is no loop - because the way the hoses are connected to the tank and the tank/its vent act as a loop/valve.

On the hose from the sea cock. It is usual to have a loop in the flexible pipe taking it above the heeled water line. There is usually  plastic 'u' bend clamped on to the up and down pipes to form the u shape. This bend should have a small screw cap (like a car tyres valve). Inside is a tiny rubber non return valve. It allows air into the pipework to prevent the motion of the boat pumping sea water back up the pipe until it siphons back into the toilet.

Check your anti siphon loop valves. The little rubber valves on mine perished, stuck together and stopped the anti siphon from working. Much nicer job than cleaning out the 'jokers'.

I think you're right, mine were in service kits stuffed in a plastic container with other things by the previous owner, even the O-rings aren't O anymore.

I never really understood why they called it a "Joker" valve, now I think I know: it is a joke, it doesn't work!

I've replaced this valve in both heads twice now and the bowls still slowly fill with backflow from the pipe to the holding tank.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop this, or have i just got a bad batch of valves ?

That'a really useful Mohammad - thankyou.. Clearly the first thing I have to do is take the inspection cover off and see what's going on. It's not the first motor that's failed on my my 54 due to water ingress......I'll keep everyong posted on this forum with progress.

On our 54, the staysail furler sounded rough from the time we purchased her. After a few months of cruising, the Genoa furler started sounding the same. When I removed the inspection cover on the furlers water poured out and I noticed that all lubrication had fallen away from the gears.

We contacted Riza of Emek Marin in Turkey (since we were still in Turkey) and he referred a rigger that worked on most Bamars in Turkey. He removed both furlers, dismantled them and found that all bearings had rusted and the seals had failed. He replaced all bearings and seals and belts and reinstalled them. He mentioned that the top seals on the Bamars fail due to drying and water seeps into the furler. He also removed the top plastic cover on the furlers because he said that moisture gets trapped under the plastic and corrodes the aluminum and stainless. They have been running smooth and with out any issues since.

We considered replacing them with the new offer from Bamar and the letter they had sent for Amel owners. However after numerous e-mails (that would come back with a read receipt, so I know they are receiving the e-mails) we never got a response back.

In talking with Olivier, who did the survey for us, he mentioned that the majority of the 54s are sailing with the original furlers without issues. The main thing to remember is that both furlers, especially the Genoa furler, have to be furled under very low loads by making sure the sheets are eased to the point that the Genoa begins to luff before furling.

Tony, 

Bamar changed their design from the belt driven model that you have to a gear driven design. There was a falling-out between Amel and Bamar over the failures of the model you have, so Amel to Bamar may not be the best route. Maybe someone who has done this can comment. 

Look in the Files Section and you will find a letter from Bamar regarding an upgrade offer for Amel owners. That offer is expired, but I think they will honor it. Start with that in making decisions.

Tony, Before spending the money and time buying a replacement , take the motor to a repair shop. Most any problem with a motor can be quickly and cheaply repaired. Before removing the motor , determine that there is adequate power getting to the motor. It could be a simply fix, switch , relay or corrosion .

in place by RTV. You will need to push it out.
