Alexandre, Dealing with this for four months was a pain , I can't imagine dragging the process out for two years. I don't know if we are comparing apples to apples , if you had a lightning strike. Pantenius only denied coverage on one item and I could understand it being a grey area , so we backed it out. Otherwise they covered everything , marina charges , new equipment , and labor 100% .

This is good to know as I have been considering Pantenius instead of what Delassee sign me with as they reimbursed me 20% of the damages and expenses… not to mention it took 2 years…

expenses incurred . I don't mean this to be a plug for
Pantaenius , but only fulfilling a promise to give an
assessment of my

The technician that added my AIS Transponder 3 years ago, said he is often asked by insurance company (after vessel, mostly tanker collisions) to check if the equipment is working (which usually is).
He added it was unbelievable the amount of commercial vessel not watching or often just keep the alarm off.
I will say when you approach an harbor the alarm is annoying and eventually I keep it off (but I am at the wheel full time).
Otherwise I love my AIS Transponder, been contacted many times, definitely something I recommend.
Plus a good tool to also adjust your radar (when you see a target on the AIS you can double check on the Radar, adjust the Gain).

Hi guys, last year 10nm off Sydney, based on
my AIS plotting I had to call a container ship on ch 16 VHS
to point out he was on a direct intercept and 1 nm away. The
radio was answered immediately by a grumpy crew, who asked
who I was and where I was. After 30 seconds he came back
with ok I see you and altered course. It was 3 am and he was
not obviously not watching his AIS or had his alarm on. My
experience is  every ship with AIS will pass at least 1nm
beam, astern or forward of us so I was concerned as soon as
I saw this ship not following protocol. I'm not sure
what his watch was based on, probably radar and visual and
didn't see my mastheads or my radar signature.

Assuming that you are discussing
International waters, COLREGS Rule 7 Risk of collision
requires: "(All) Vessels must use all available
means to determine the risk of a collision, including
the use of radar (if available) to get early warning of the
risk of collision by radar plotting or equivalent systematic
observation of detected objects. (e.g. ARPA,
AIS)." 
In short, this
means that if any vessel has any aids to navigation to
prevent a collision, that vessel and crew are required to
use all of them. If you have a radar reflector and don't
hoist it, or if you have radar and don't have it on you
are in violation of Rule 7.

I hope this helps you...there are a
lot of myths and non-truths told and retold by many
sailors.

know how true it is or not, but I read in several places
that ships are not obliged to monitor AIS, besides to have
it available on a small screen.  But they are obliged to
monitor radar, and for larger ships radar is recorded for
eventual investigations, so special attention is paid to
it.

from Echomax said mounting the Active-XS unit near to the
side of a mast is a bad idea.  It must either be on top of
a mast or suspended between spreaders or backstays.

Martin, I think a good place
for passive radar reflectors is above the radar on the
mizzen mast, about mid-way between radar and top.

In late June I had damage from a lightning strike. I was asked by a member of the group , who I was insured with . When I responded Pantaenius , they asked if I would report back on my experience , which was echoed by a couple others.

While there was no evidence of a direct hit , all my electronics were damaged from ais to ssb , everything , except the TV, dvd and a couple of fans . I won't post what the final cost was, but it was well over 50K , twice what I would have thought , and took three times longer to repair than I would have thought.

While the whole process took longer than I would have liked. Pantaenius was for the most part not responsible for that. From my experience, I found them to be fair and willing to meet their responsibility to reimburse me for all the losses and expenses incurred . I don't mean this to be a plug for Pantaenius , but only fulfilling a promise to give an assessment of my experience.

Hi guys, last year 10nm off Sydney, based on my AIS plotting I had to call a container ship on ch 16 VHS to point out he was on a direct intercept and 1 nm away. The radio was answered immediately by a grumpy crew, who asked who I was and where I was. After 30 seconds he came back with ok I see you and altered course. It was 3 am and he was not obviously not watching his AIS or had his alarm on. My experience is  every ship with AIS will pass at least 1nm beam, astern or forward of us so I was concerned as soon as I saw this ship not following protocol. I'm not sure what his watch was based on, probably radar and visual and didn't see my mastheads or my radar signature.

I would say it is the other way around with the big ships and Radar/AIS. They tend to look more at the AIS than on the radar …

 

One important thing when mounting a radar reflector. Make shure it does its work even aft of your boat. We have hade one very nasty experience with a sailingyacht that we overtook. We didn’t see it until we were almost side by side and when we had passed the boat it was very clear on the radar. It was dark, rainy and windy.

Job car track forward end

Due to a car failure we are replacing the Antal jib car. To slide the old car off and new car on we had to remove the forward termination block. This was secured by a 3 inch or so eye bolt. It came out with difficulty, but eventually was coaxed out.
However in reassembly the bolt threads are not catching anything. In fact even without the block in place the bolt simply drops to the deck.
The drawing showing the crossection indicates a bent plate backer, presumably with tapped holes,
behind the fiberglass into which the stanchions and jib track are screwed. The area under this appears inaccessible behind the saloon cabinets.
The eye bolt extraction required a significant amount of up force and one could imagine there was a nut in the other end that was being held in place by the up force until fully unscrewed. An inaccessible nut does not comport with the quality of Amel design.
Has anyone had experience with this bolt? Any insights or solutions?

Ben, I could not do it with the connector on. I had to go with pushing a wire, then a small string first, then lashed the cable and pulled and pushed alternately through the sealant.
I tried digging some of the sealant out and that helped a bit.
It's not ~that~ hard, just in a bad spot to try to reach it.
Ultimately I needed to use a screw-down/crimped gold connector at the antenna. As mentioned, not the best but it's workable and easy to replace if it corrodes.

Our GO! hangs from the bottom of the shelf to starboard of the companionway, i.e. just above the entrance to the passageway.  Its antenna resides where Amel originally installed the Furuno GPS antenna, i.e., on the aft port corner of the boat.  A new cable was installed that follows the original Amel installation.

Reception is excellent.  I tested it without the antenna under the bimini, and I was able to get it to work, but performance was uneven, probably because of the flexible solar panels zippered on to the bimini.

Hi I bought a 6-man self-righting Sea Safe liferaft approved for Ocean going, combined with a grab bag.  Cheaper models are either coastal only or are not self righting. 

Sea Safe can be serviced in many locations.

Paul,

Since the anchor wash pump was installed in several locations by Amel over the course of the SM production, you may want to state which pump yo have and where it is located.

Some pumps can have a defective or leaking valve which will cause it to pump some water backwards...this could be the explanation.
