Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] anchor chain wash
Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>
Hello Vladimir,
I went about the problem differently; installed a connection from the forward heads to the anchor wash line. Fresh water anchor wash. Also installed a fresh water wash system in the port lazarette. Long hose and you wash the entire boat with fresh H2O… Cheers, Jean-Pierre Germain Eleuthera SM007 Lanzarote

Ian, Please let me know precise location of your wash down deck connecter. Obviously it is very important to make it right the first time. Vladimir

The large upper seal on our Maramu thruster does not appear removable from above, I.e. from inside the boat. Has anyone replaced the thruster seals on a maramu while the boat is in the water?
Out boat is a 1987 Maramu, currently in Ft Lauderdale.

Hi Vlad and Ric,
We fitted the stainless flush deck hose connector after we saw it on another SM. Very neat. Means that you can connect a hose without having to open the port bow locker. We also fitted a more powerful sea water pump than the Amel version. The combination works very well.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: anchor chain wash
Hi Vlad, Yes, the locker has to be open or the hose gets pinched. It's not ideal, but no new hole in the deck. I don't use the original washdown nozzle at the bow roller at all. When single handing I tie the nozzle on the rail while I go to the cockpit to turn the pump on. It's a powerful jet that is like a big spitting snake when loose on the deck. Once an inexperienced crew accidentally turned the pump on when cleaning by the helm. By the time I discovered it, the bow lockers were almost full of sea water! But the boat was on the waterline for the first time ever! Kent Robertson S/V Kristy SM243

Kent, Thanks. Do you have to keep port locker partially open when you use washdown hose? Is your hose connection in the locker? Do you shot off water to the original anchor wash outlet? VLADIMIR

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: anchor chain wash
Hola Vlad, I installed a "Y" connector in the hose in the port bow locker. A 12 ft (3m) hose is kept in the locker and works well with the high pressure anchor wash pump for getting mud off of the chain before it gets on the boat. I think you will want to use a high pressure pump to clean the chain and anchor. Low pressure won't be useful for that. Kent Robertson S/V Kristy SM243

I'll be looking at the USPS offerings. Always thought that was for motorboats but makes sense that many things would be useful to both. Cheers, Rick Gutierrez

I recently saw a perko flush deck hose connector on a power boat. The hose snaps in like a typical quick connect hose. The hose is a light, short tight coil. No experience with it. Interesting though. Use both.

Now I sail in Chesapeake Bay and most of my anchoring is in the mud. Anchor wash on my SM 2000 is useless. I belive that real solution is installation of deck wash connection on the bow. I plan redirect chain wash to a deck wash connector. It can be used for salt water boat wash or shower aswell. You don't need high water pressure if you use hose for anchor or chain wash. I seriously contemplate flat through deck installation of deck wash fitting. I see on line flat deck wash connectors are made by Johnson Pump or by Jubsco. Did anybody install deck wash connector fitting on Amel SM? Vladimir

Hi All and especially Alexandre, Thank you for your threads and images it has been an amazing help for me during the maintenance program on my Mango. It is almost finished and I set sail on the 14th December for warmer waters to the north of Australia. I have an issue with my Frigoboat refrigerator that seems strange. It will work fine off the generator and shore power but trips the breaker on 12 volts. If anyone has had this problem and has a solution it would be appreciated. The main issue to to make sure there is no air in the fuel line, how to bleed, etc. I am not sure you need to learn more than that. The way I do it: if this is something that needs to be done every 10 years (like rebuilding the propeller), I rather hire someone that does it on a regular basis… If this is something that needs to be done on a regular basis (every 2 years) then I will learn. Totally agree with living onboard for at least 1 year before to make any change, this is the advice I was given. Here is the link for the survey: http://nikimat.com/Expertise_Super_Maramu_2000_BALAO_septembre.pdf It is in French. My belief, or at least hope, is that when all the maintenance is up to date it is easier to do it regularly. I am probably an exception on the group as I have to work (from the boat), so when I arrived somewhere I have to get connected to the internet and work. So because of that, instead to wait for parts to break I change or maintain them when I have the chance, as never they break at a good time. I was told: “Schedule your maintenance before your maintenance schedule you”. My trip has only be the Caribbean so far, I can’t imagine for Bill and Judy the additional shipping cost to Asia, etc… Diesel engine are very strong and durable, change your oil, filter (oil is VERY cheap compare to an overhaul), etc. Take care of your equipment and your equipment will take care of you. Date: Saturday, November 12, 2016, 1:05 PM Thank you Alexandre, I definitely plan on taking all the ASA courses I can. As I think I mentioned in another post, I am obsessive/compulsive when it comes to learning, so I enjoy the process. Can you point me to a place to download the service manuals? I have read somewhere that there are some in this group? If not I will do a search, but just in case you had it handy somewhere it would be greatly appreciated. RE: Basic Diesel. Definitely want to do this. However, I've also read that there are more in-depth classes specific to the engine manufacturer. I have heard that Yanmar does these sort of classes (haven't really researched this yet but came across it - haven't heard of Volvo doing it but I would be surprised if they don't). I would assumed then that these courses would be considerably more intensive than the Basic Diesel? I can see taking one of these as a top-list item in my book. Overkill? I've constantly heard the "live on the boat for one year before you decided to make any modifications/fixes/upgrades" and it seems quite logical. Something you thought you'd want may turn out to be a non-factor. RE: sharing your survey. If it has anything that would help me understand some of the typical wear factors (and maybe not so typical) on the Amel for future reference when I am at that stage, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for the 20% figure. I had estimated 10% per year, but I can see how the first couple of years there maybe additional modifications/upgrades to get it to what would be right for us (I don't use the word perfect because I know that is a trap to get stuck never finishing - been there done that). Glad to know that the 15-20 hours is accurate on weekly maintenance. Heard that number about other boats and knowing from an experienced Amel owner gives that figure more weight. RE: parts. Thankfully, reading through SV BeBe's blog I can clearly see the costs and time associated with trying to obtain parts at foreign ports. The plans would be to stock up on just about as much spare parts/units that I can carry, and it appears that the Amel's have plenty of storage. Thank you for sharing your spare parts list. Engine hours is amazing. I though that an engine would get long in the tooth at around 3,000 hours and would need to be changed. I really need to learn more about diesel engines! Thank you for tightening up my budgets. Starting to work on my spreadsheets and this will help a lot. Can't tell you how glad I am that I found this forum and posters like yourself and the rest. A great support group is also something that will definitely influence my decision on purchasing an Amel. Good luck to your continued endeavors. Kent,
The only time I have ever heard the DST-800's "tock, tock" was when I took it out to clean it and I put it in vinegar while it was still on. I turned it off. The "tock, tock" was not at all loud and I think it would be impossible to hear it from the inside even with baby ears. I am in my 40's, for whatever's worth. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: What to do with the hole...
We also have the P79 as a 2nd depth sounder right up in the fwd under floor section of the front cabin and can unfortunately confirm that all these particular units are really excellent with no need of another hole in your boat, but unusually all have the same ticking noise from new. In our case it is simply an extra unit for redundancy and/or as a fwd warning sounder when entering shallowing waters so we normally leave it unplugged from the Raymarine ES97. At all other times we use the original B&G one which makes no sounds at all. Colin & Lauren Streeter Island Pearl II, Amel 53 #332 Brisbane

Re: Help - 5-Year Plan

I am the owner of a 33 year old Perkins 4-154 with 9600 hours on it. When I bought the boat it had 4600 hours. I have never cleaned/changed the injectors or adjusted the valves. I change the fuel filters only when the engine begins to hesitate. I overheated it once and blew a head gasket. I do change the oil every 100 hours. The engine now leaks oil into the bilge, so I have to remember to turn off the bilge pump as I enter a marina. I'm not proud of the fact that I do so little engine maintenance but the engine kicks over immediately every time I turn the key and I get the same 3/4 gallon per hour I have always gotten and still cruise at 6.5 knots at 2000 rpm. I know repowering is in the near future and I'm not looking forward to the decision to go with a current marine diesel or a rebuild for exactly what Bill R. was talking about. Rick, In addition to ASA classes, you should also look into the USPS offerings. There is probably a local squadron you can join. Dennis Johns s/v Libertad

I have to respectfully disagree with Bob as far as tackling the North Atlantic. My wife and I will soon complete our circumnavigation having gone down the west coast of Central America, turning west at Ecuador and making Australia, Thailand, up into the Med and across the Atlantic from the Canaries. You stay in those latitudes, stick to the cruising seasons and you can avoid gales, hurricanes, cyclones and by all means the North Atlantic and the Southern Indian Ocean. We call our voyage World Cruising Without Calamity. If we aren't considered 'tried and tested' sailors, that's ok with us. Dennis Johns s/v Libertad Maramu #121 Granada

How very strange... I have installed two of these on different boats and never heard a thing inside the boat. Either my ears are not very good, (they are not!) or your unit transmits on lower order harmonics of the 50 or 200 kHz signal more than it should. You might give Airmar tech support a try.
