Is there a way to isolate the electronic ignition and add a ground to it?

I am rather familiar with the isolated ground on my older Yanmar engine as I completely rewired it myself this summer.

As an additional note to my March 8 post, I have installed the Yanmar 4JH80 with isolated grounds to all the sensors and alternators.   However, I have found that beginning with this year Yanmar is making their engines with an electronic ignition which requires constant power and a ground to the engine block which ob course violates Amel's isolated ground design.  The Boatyard mechanic is telling me that an isolating prop shaft coupling by Global Rubber will prevent any current from going into the water and will solve any corrosion problems.  Have anybody encountered this issue?

Hello John,

We modified the electrics to include 450W of solar energy.  After 1 1/2 years, we found our mods very useful… we added a 3 KW inverter in the engine bay and wired most 220 V outlets to the inverter.  Great not to fire up the genset to get a cuppa  java.  We chose a Cotek product because they are made for the commercial fishing boats and bullet proof.

The heating element on the Quick Nautical Boiler B3 40L has a 55mm hex nut.  You need a 55mm immersion box wrench to remove it.  It's an axle nut wrench that you should be able to purchase at a Napa or other auto parts store.

Maramu cockpit canopy

We're fairly naive Amelers and we've just noticed for the first time the sound of water sloshing from side to side in the forward base of the canopy over the cockpit in our Maramu. I notice that there are six plastic plugs along the forward surface of the base of the canopy and I imagine they may be for access to bolts that attach the canopy to the main superstructure but I have no evidence for that idea. We've had torrential rain for the past couple of weeks here in Barbados and I notice that one of the six plastic plugs is loose and it's possible that the rain got through.

Does anyone have diagrams or knowledge of how the canopy structure mates with the main superstructure or any experience of water ingress to that part?

Mizzen gear box

On my Super Maramu the mizzen could not benfurled propetly anymore - 3/4 turns worked ok, the about 1/4 turn I had to help turning the foil with my hand. When taking the gear box apart, I found that thete is one teflon/nylon gear wheel missing about one quarter of the teethes. I tried to source the par from Amel, but they say they are unable to provide it.

Does anyone know where it could be sourced or has another idea?

Thanks for the reply Bill.  The "idle" is not very clear.

It turns out I only moved the rinsing valve 90 degrees.  It doesn't open until about 135 degrees from the "seawater" position.

Oddly, I have a Duo 100 manual in the Amel binder, but a Duo 60 per the instrument panel.  Since there are only two membranes, it must be a 60.

Do not turn ON the Dessalator for rinsing. Have the pressure valve all the way counterclockwise.

The reason the water pump was not running is:
You are using water pressure from the accumulator tanks and in about 30 seconds to a minute the pump will start

Or, you are turning the wrong valve, or the pre-filters are clogged and need changing.

Dessalator instructions - rinsing

It may depend on the brand, and frankly, I do not remember, except that I believe it turns one-quarter turn...try a YouTube search for "water heater heating element replacement."

I am sure that you will find one similar to yours.

Ian, that is an important comment. If you buy the element at a marine store, it could be hundreds of dollars/euros.

However, if you buy the element at a plumbing supply shop, it will be less than a hundred dollars/euros.

The first time I replaced mine I bought it at a marine store and paid hundreds. The second time I replaced it, I was in the Manoel Island Shipyard and they replaced it for 130 euro including labor. The element they sourced did not come with a gasket. They tried to use the old one, but it leaked. They had to repeat the installation process, fabricating a new gasket by cutting one out of gasket material. By the way, this is a GREAT yard.

Hi Peregrinus,
The RCDs protect against a ground fault, not an overcurrent situation.  Even a small current going to ground will trip the RCDs.  It is most likely your heating element in the water heater, but could also be the thermostat.  I guess there could also be a fault in the wiring to the water heater, but that's unlikely.

I'm not an electrician, but here's how I was told to troubleshoot:

I have a Quick Nautical Boiler.   Check both the thermostat and heating element for continuity between the line and ground, and between neutral and ground.  If you find any connection, thats the culprit.

If it were an overcurrent problem and tripped the breaker, you would check the resistance between line and neutral on both the thermostat and the element.  On my Quick Boiler, the heating element should show ~40 Ohms.  Sorry, I don't remember what the thermostat should show.  If it differed significantly from your new spare thermostat or heating element, that's your culprit.

Hope that makes sense, please correct me if I've got something wrong here.
