Good morning Mark

When I left San Juan, Puerto Rico, for Tortola, BVI, I went to SailClear (registered, etc.) but emigration/customs never replied…
I actually just logged in and I am still “pending” (since October 30)…

May be others have a better experience…

Does anyone have
recommendations for on-line tools such as
SailClear for the check-in procedures in the Caribbean? Do
they help? Any suggestions
on what to use, speed the process and make it easier?

Bill,

I had a good laugh a couple times today thinking of your sledgehammer and plexiglass window removal!  You ask an interesting question about whether it makes sense to use caulking that can end up lasting longer than the plexiglass.   With some sharp reefing tools and sharped putty knives it is possible to cut through the 3145 but it is not much fun.

I use the C-sink method with caulk as well and agree that is a good idea.  I hadn’t thought about the not turning the bolt when using butyl and will keep that in mind.  Thanks for all of the butyl tips,  I will start using some and see how it goes.

There are some little tips and tricks that aren't really unique to bedding butyl, but seem to help.  Where bolts go through a deck, put a little countersink around the bolt hole to give the butyl someplace to flow into and seal more of the bolt's length.  When tightening bolts, try as much as possible to turn the nut, NOT the bolt, to keep from spinning the butyl around. If two parts have a really tight fit, I have put washers between them as spacers to make sure that I don't squeeze out too much of the butyl.

I replaced a large plexiglass window in an old S2 sailboat that was installed with 3145 that didn't leak but was crazed to opaque.  The manufacturer's recommended method for removal of the old window:  Sledgehammer. It worked :)

Thanks for your input on the butyl tape.  I always wondered if it were safe to use on/under plexiglass so good to know.    Can you clean up the dirt that attaches with a solvent?  I am going to start using the butyl tape as a bedding material and see how I like it.

I thought that I would mention a caulki ng that has worked well for me in bedding large plexiglass windows with a lot of movement.  It is the Dow Corning 3145, which is a non corrosive (actually primarily used for electrical work), very elastic and strong  silicone caulking.  If you sand the edge of the plexiglass and apply the plastic primer recommended by Dow(I can get the part # on the primer if anyone needs it) to the bonding surfaces, the adhesion is amazing.  I used this initially on a customers boat that had a lot of flex in the cabin trunk and huge windows that tore the regular marine silicone caulkings apart in 2-3 years with regularity.  The  3145  generally lasted 7-8 years which saved a lot of labour.   It only comes in clear and gray unfortunately and the gray is what you want for long UV exposure.  One downside is that the stuff can take a lot of heat so using a heat gun to warm a fitting for removal is not very effective.  A sharpened putty knife see ms to be the best way to go.

Pain is coming from radicular edema caused by a compression.
If you find an anestesiologist the main tharpy is to injecy in peridural space ( epidural injection) a cortisonic drug.

Good afternoon Porter,

Thanks for your message.

Here is the copy of the MRI report.
Therefore, like everything else in the Caribbean, how to be sure that the “local” person (in Tortola) did an accurate reading…

The pain medication is definitely too mild, the pain wakes me up at night then can not sleep.
-1 x Diclofenac Sodium 75 mg every 12 hours
-1 x Baclofen 10 mg every 8 hours
-1 x Tramadol hydrocholide 50 mg every 6 hours
-2 x Paracetamol 500 mg every 6 hours

A friend send me information from a medical web site called “up to date” and it seems all the treatments say “evidence of effectiveness are lacking” or “quality of evidence considered low”…

“local” doctors say it will resolved itself within 2 weeks (somehow I doubt)…
Would love to hear your feedback.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Thanks so much for your message.

I actually posted by mistake this on the forum...

I am quite upset with the local doctor, that prescribe too
mild medication, the pain constantly wakes me up at night…

Anyway, I don’t know when I will arrive in St Martin,
being solo and in pain, I have to be more cautious than
usual.

It is possible that I leave on the 11 and arrive on the 12,
but not sure as I could wait for better weather too…

As always thanks so much…

If you get to SXM before the 13th.

I have some stuff in my kit that will help.

I am also VERY friendly with a local pharmacist who

knows everyone on the Dutch side.

Good Luck,

Good morning Kent,
I
had a friend who had 3 surgeries and still back pain…

Well Saturday night, had back pain again,
this time it was

intolerable and my
left leg was numb.

In the morning went
to a clinique, the doctor gave an injection

of Voltaren, no effect. Later she gave an
injection of

steroids, no effect.
She sent me to the emergency room who gave
me another injection:

no effect, then
an injection of Morphine, still no effect.

Neither they or I could believe it… They
said they couldn’t

inject anything
else in fear I would overdose.

I saw a
doctor (who was smelling booze 1/2 meter away) who said

he did not want me on medication to see
the full effect in the

morning, then
to have an MRI… so couldn’t sleep all night.

In the morning surprisingly they gave me
medication, the doctor

did not come…
just as I was going to sleep, my neighbor put his

TV loud and was singing rap music…
Administration came and said it was $1170
per day plus

medication, X Ray, etc. I
said this is crazy.

I was supposed to
have the MRI in the afternoon, somehow did not

happened, I was getting pretty upset, my
blood pressure reach

160/100 in the
evening.

Received medication, slept
ok, again delay for the MRI, I told a

nice doctor, I will leave today, as I can’t keep
paying

$1170

per day for waiting, he said I
misunderstood the price, that

this was
for everything, he called administration who came and

said, since I am not a “local”, this
is the price for “Visitors”

(tourist). The doctor was stunned.

Had
MRI, the tech person (unofficially) show me a disc
pointing

out which causes the numb leg and the
pain.

The Hospital wanted me to stay
one more day for the doctor MRI’s

reading, I said NO, we argue for 2 hours, then I was able
to

discharged myself against medical
advice. The nice doctor

prescribe me
medication.

Was presented a bill of
over $4000. I refused to pay the day I

was waiting for the MRI.

On the bill
they even charge $0.50 for the little cup in which

they bring the medication ?!? crazy.
I told them if they had told me the price,
I would have decline

and take a plane
for St martin.

We settle, I left in
pain as the medication was wearing off.

I have a bag of medication that should
help me up to 2 weeks.

I am looking at
the first weather opportunity to go to St

Martin.
Since I am hanging myself (upside down)
from the mast hoping

this will
elongate the spine and easy the problem…

I started to stretch last week (before the
pain in the leg) will

resume as soon
as I feel better.

How is everything
else? Any chance for your eye? How about the

family problems?
Alexandre

Hi Alex. Sorry to
hear about your back

issues. I've
had 4 spine surgeries over the last 40

years. After the last one, I started doing "back

yoga", just gentle stretching and
core strengthening,

no pretzel stuff.
It's been like a miracle for

me.Best of

luck!

 [Attachment(s) from
Alexandre Uster von Baar included below]Good
afternoon Porter,

Thanks for your message.

Here is the copy of the MRI
report.
Therefore, like everything else
in the Caribbean, how to be sure that the “local” person
(in Tortola) did an accurate reading…

The pain medication is definitely
too mild, the pain wakes me up at night then can not
sleep.
-1 x Diclofenac
Sodium 75 mg every 12 hours
-1 x Baclofen 10 mg
every 8 hours
-1
x Tramadol hydrocholide 50 mg every 6 hours
-2 x Paracetamol 500 mg every 6
hours

A friend send me
information from a medical web site called “up to date”
and it seems all the treatments say “evidence of
effectiveness are lacking” or “quality of evidence
considered low”…

“local” doctors say it will
resolved itself within 2 weeks (somehow I doubt)…
Would love to hear
your feedback.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Good morning Eric,

Thanks so much for your
message.

I actually posted by mistake this
on the forum...

I am quite upset with the local
doctor, that prescribe too
mild medication, the pain
constantly wakes me up at night…

Anyway, I don’t know when I
will arrive in St Martin,
being solo and in pain, I have to
be more cautious than
usual.

It is possible that I leave on
the 11 and arrive on the 12,
but not sure as I could wait for
better weather too…

As always thanks so much…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,

If you get to SXM before the
13th.

I have some stuff in
my kit that will help.

I am also VERY friendly with a
local pharmacist who

knows everyone on the Dutch
side.

Good Luck,

Eric

Good morning Eric,

Thanks so much for your message.

I actually posted by mistake this on the forum...

I am quite upset with the local doctor, that prescribe too
mild medication, the pain constantly wakes me up at night…

Anyway, I don’t know when I will arrive in St Martin,
being solo and in pain, I have to be more cautious than
usual.

It is possible that I leave on the 11 and arrive on the 12,
but not sure as I could wait for better weather too…

As always thanks so much…

Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Alexandre,

If you get to SXM before the 13th.

I have some stuff in my kit that will help.

I am also VERY friendly with a local pharmacist who

knows everyone on the Dutch side.

Good Luck,

Eric

Good morning Kent,
I
had a friend who had 3 surgeries and still back pain…

Well Saturday night, had back pain again,
this time it was

intolerable and my
left leg was numb.

In the morning went
to a clinique, the doctor gave an injection

of Voltaren, no effect. Later she gave an
injection of

steroids, no effect.
She sent me to the emergency room who gave
me another injection:

no effect, then
an injection of Morphine, still no effect.

Neither they or I could believe it… They
said they couldn’t

inject anything
else in fear I would overdose.

I saw a
doctor (who was smelling booze 1/2 meter away) who said

he did not want me on medication to see
the full effect in the

morning, then
to have an MRI… so couldn’t sleep all night.

In the morning surprisingly they gave me
medication, the doctor

did not come…
just as I was going to sleep, my neighbor put his

TV loud and was singing rap music…
Administration came and said it was $1170
per day plus

medication, X Ray, etc. I
said this is crazy.

I was supposed to
have the MRI in the afternoon, somehow did not

happened, I was getting pretty upset, my
blood pressure reach

160/100 in the
evening.

Received medication, slept
ok, again delay for the MRI, I told a

nice doctor, I will leave today, as I can’t keep
paying

$1170

per day for waiting, he said I
misunderstood the price, that

this was
for everything, he called administration who came and

said, since I am not a “local”, this
is the price for “Visitors”

(tourist). The doctor was stunned.

Had
MRI, the tech person (unofficially) show me a disc
pointing

out which causes the numb leg and the
pain.

The Hospital wanted me to stay
one more day for the doctor MRI’s

reading, I said NO, we argue for 2 hours, then I was able
to

discharged myself against medical
advice. The nice doctor

prescribe me
medication.

Was presented a bill of
over $4000. I refused to pay the day I

was waiting for the MRI.

On the bill
they even charge $0.50 for the little cup in which

they bring the medication ?!? crazy.
I told them if they had told me the price,
I would have decline

and take a plane
for St martin.

We settle, I left in
pain as the medication was wearing off.

I have a bag of medication that should
help me up to 2 weeks.

I am looking at
the first weather opportunity to go to St

Martin.
Since I am hanging myself (upside down)
from the mast hoping

this will
elongate the spine and easy the problem…

I started to stretch last week (before the
pain in the leg) will

resume as soon
as I feel better.

How is everything
else? Any chance for your eye? How about the

family problems?
Alexandre

Hi Alex. Sorry to
hear about your back

issues. I've
had 4 spine surgeries over the last 40

years. After the last one, I started doing "back

yoga", just gentle stretching and
core strengthening,

no pretzel stuff.
It's been like a miracle for

me.Best of

luck!

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] fresh water hose join to pipe

Bill,

Thanks for your input on the butyl tape.  I always wondered if it were safe to use on/under plexiglass so good to know.    Can you clean up the dirt that attaches with a solvent?  I am going to start using the butyl tape as a bedding material and see how I like it.

I thought that I would mention a caulking that has worked well for me in bedding large plexiglass windows with a lot of movement. A sharpened putty knife seems to be the best way to go.

Not for anything permanently under water. Thru-hull fittings and such should have an adhesive sealant.
Not for sealing things that are routinely exposed to solvents, including diesel and gasoline.

Otherwise, I think pretty much anything goes.  It is compatible with plastics, so it's good for bedding windows and hatches.  When you use it to bed down a plexiglass window if you use enough, and squeeze it out, it is easy to get an attractive seam.

One downside is that since it is non-curing it stays sticky.  That's good on the inside of the joint, but if it is exposed in a wide seam it will attract dirt.

Bill,

I have heard good things about the butyl caulking tape.   I have removed quite a bit of hardware that was bedded with it over the years and don’t recall see many problems but I have not used it much myself to date.  Are there any limitations in where you would use this material?  I hadn’t thought about the shelf life aspect, that alone is a good reason to carry at least some aboard.  I have some of the tape  and will put some in the box of parts I am taking to the boat on the next trip over.

Yes, I can imagine that trying to migrate a solvent into caulking to soften it would be a slow process.  If the fitting is metal that you want to remove, try heating it up to about 200F.  I find that I can usually  remove the fitting using very little stress so no damage the gelcoat/fiberglass.  It is of course preferable to only heat the metal part,  not the gelcoat/fiberglass since heat will soften that as well.

I think thah the therapy is unbalancet only towards pain an not for the "origin " of pain.

Good Luck,

Eric

Hi, French or Dutch side doesn't matter much... all the repair folk seem to have a fast dingy. We had a good experience with Custom Fit Marine redoing the hard dodger windows (and matching the colour). You can just call them on the VHF, channel 10 if I remember correctly.

Cheers,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Guadeloupe Marinas?

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Dan,

If you must go to Guadalupe, Pointe a Pitre Marina at Bas du Fort is your place.

However, there is a reason that Amel moved to Martinique. You will find Martinique very safe and secure as compared to Guadalupe. Although Marina du Marin isn't the best marina in the Caribbean, it offers more value than most. If you are going to stay 10 days or longer, you will find the Marina du Marin's monthly rate cheaper than any other option. Last year it was about 580 euros including electricity (reserve by email to qualify for the monthly rate). Of course, there is the great anchorage of St. Anne outside the marina area.

If you have some flexibility, consider either Martinique, or the possibility of mooring the boat on a mooring at Ile de Saints and your guests taking one of the many ferris from Guadalupe to Ile de Saints.

We stayed at Pointe a Pitre Marina - Bas du Fort - just last month.  A lot of activity with charters coming and going.  Many eateries and bars in the marina to choose from and some services.  And price was right.  Can't recommend the town outside the marina but it has reputation for petty crime.  I would definitely recommend the isles de Saints just south of Guadalupe.  Great place to hike and eat seafood.

Point a Pitre Marina is good--smells a bit, however it is where Amel used to be.
There is also a marina concierge there if you need anything. Also boat shops in the Marina.

Where would I not use butyl tape...  that's a good question...

OOPS - sorry guys. In the off season Katherine and I race Soling 1M Radio Controlled Model Yachts and the keel broke off of Katherine's  "yacht", not Sangaris.  Now, that would really have been a fun DIY project !

Rescuebond.com is the website, as is rescuetape.com. I think it's a small company and there's not much info. The packaging says it is an "Advanced Polymer" which isn't much help. Does say it can be applied to wet surfaces and/or underwater, although not recommended for permanently immersed joints. I emailed them asking for data sheets. Will let you know.

Cheers, Craig

Woah!!!!   Say WHAT???  Your KEEL broke off ????

Did I miss something?

Do you have a link to any more information about Rescue Bond?  Google can't seem to find an MSDS or details about the product at all...

The Rescue Tape people recently came out with a new product called Rescue Bond XL1Pro which is said to be much better than 3M's 5200. I just tried it last week to rebed my keel after it broke off. It seems to live up to the hype, and I fully expect it to hold up over time,  Strong adhesive and flexible sealant. Comes in clear (which stays clear when cured) or white. No sticky mess like 5200. And it doesn't "go off" in the tube after you use some, like 5200 does.

Hola Craig!
Your keel came off???  Ouch!! I've been out of touch, did you post about it on the Amel Owners' group?

Your luck seems to be catching up to mine the last couple of years.

Best to Catherine.
