Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] mizzen traveler end stops

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good afternoon Bill,

I replaced mine over a year ago. Here is Gary Silver #335 email at the time.
It was indeed a perfect fit.
Sincerely, Alexandre

Hi Kent:

I purchased end caps for the mizzen traveler from Amel. They are Lewmar part number 29171040 and were a perfect fit for my hull # 335 SM.

http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1%7C118%7C2358559%7C2358564&id=1390112

At the same time I purchased the Amel proprietary jib car traveler pulley at the bottom of the crank. They come in two pieces, each side, as I recall.

Sorry I don't have prices but the stops for the mizzen traveler were cheap and the metal pulleys were in the $150 US range (again from memory). I had them shipped with a lot of other items that were quite heavy so the usual high freight charges were included. As these two items are light I would think they wouldn't be too expensive to have shipped.

As always, send a picture of the item with your order.

All the best,

Gary Silver

Anyone have a part number or source
for the end stops on the mizzen traveler? Mine are crusty
and need replacement.
Thanks,

Hi Eric,

I am interested in your photos,   I (we) are ex Hallberg Rassy owners moving to the Amel, and are putting together information from this group for our next boat.

Hi,’

I was on Kimberlite last week and took photos of my fuel pre filter  assembly, pump hoses and filter.

I also have a photo of my auxiliary fuel tanks (75 gallons) that are in my port outboard locker.

If you are interested please send me your email.

I also have photos of the install of my espar heater and the conversion of the dishwasher to a top loading refrigerator.

Hi Eric,
I thought you had the 160,  mine is the 60l/h model.  I guess you've got answers to your questions already.  Does anybody know if the membranes are the same in the 60 and 160l/h models?

Eric,
if you upload your photos to the Yahoo group site then they'll always be available to all, and better yet, the tags or title are searchable.

uploading to Yahoo Group is also easier on email systems and inboxes, no need for large attachments.

I never use the bowthruster when the
engine is not running.  The alternator is more than enough
to keep the batteries up.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Xantrex battery monitor

Sv Garulfo

Ok let me clarify that immediately.

Last year while on our search for a 54 in the med we visited one of the first ones to be built. When showing us the bow sail locker where the bow thruster is encased, the guy (not the owner, the broker rep) told us that Amel fitted a big red emergency circuit breaker on later versions of the 54 following a few incidents whereby the relay melted and the bow thruster would drive the boat into a spin at a rather unfortunate moment. And that was due to low voltage on the batteries leading to high current to deliver the power. The conclusion given was; Always run the gen and 100A charger when running the bow thruster.
When finally onboard our own (a later version) we had enough stuff to work out to experiment the reality of that lesson. I did wonder why the alternator wouldn't be enough to feed the power to the thruster, but figured that maybe the low power from the engine in neutral/dead slow was the explanation.

I'm obviously very happy to have misunderstood the whole thing and happy to relegate this idea in the myth department.

My first post,hello all

We are currently looking for a new to us sailboat and 3 Amel models are on the short list, the Sanitorin,Maramu and Super Maramu.  All of our interest from these and Amel in general has come from magazines, blogs ,forums and sailboat listings.  We are from Wisconsin and unfortunately we have not run across any on these waters yet.  My question is are there any Amel's on the Great lakes preferably Michigan?  We would love to get up close and confirm we are on the right path.  Thank you

I never use the bowthruster when the engine is not running.  The alternator is more than enough to keep the batteries up.

Hi Thomas,

The all Mastervolt solution looks good if you enough $$$s.

Regarding your questions, here's my two-penny worth

1. Bowthruster : It's 99.99% sure that you will have the main engine running when you are using the bow thruster. The engine alternator will be charging the house batteries. The bow thruster doesn't care what kind of batteries are powering it aslong as the voltage is correct and the battery bank can supply enough current. That won;t be an issue with a big bank of LiFePO4 batteries, just as it's not an issue with lead-acid batteries
BTW I never heard of anyone running the genset when using the bowthruster.

2. Starter battery : This is a completely separate system from your house bank. For a start (pun intended) the start battery is 12V and is charged by the small; alternators on both the main engine and the genset. This battery can be any kind of 12V battery you like but for max CCA you should use lead-acid.

3. Solar panels are great, most efficient if you wire them in series and use an MPPT controller to regulate the voltage. Mastervolt have one that has a profile for LiFePO4 batteries.

4. Capacity : you need to work out your likely consumption ..Bill / ex Bebe published a spreadsheet here with consumption figures that will approximate yours - you can go through it and change for 53 - 54 differences.
Then ensuring that you don't exceed the DOD of 80% and adding a buffer, you can calculate your needed capacity.

Good luck

I'm sure will all be very interested to hear how it all works out.

And just a niggle from me, I wish Mastervolt would not call these batteries Lithium Ion when they are Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries.
Lithium Ion batteries use lithium cobalt dioxide or lithium manganese oxide as a cathode.
LiFePO4 batteries use lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material.
These batteries have quite different characteristics.

Cheers

Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Xantrex battery monitor

Thanks all for the input. We are off the boat now and haven't made a decision yet. We need to work more numbers to see if it starts to make economic sense.

Regarding compatibility, our 54 is fitted with 2 matervolt chargers (100A and 40A) and the alternator is mastervolt too. The LiFePO4 offering from mastervolt says this is all compatible and just a matter of configuring the various components to work together. The concept of MasterBus is quite attractive too; an easy way to monitor the whole lot.

Remaining questions are:

1. Capability to run the bow thruster safely from those batteries. (We are amel newbies and follow the rule to run the generator when using the bow thruster. Curious to hear your views on the one.)

2. starter battery. As Bill have said, its quality is about CCA. I understand lead is definitely better on that front, but is it advisable to mix types....

3. The case of solar. We are keen to add solar panels. We have simpsons davitts and we are considering adding an arch on top of them to support the panels (seen something similar on the recently sold 54 "Bel Ami", if someone has a contact for them, that'd be great). Probably can fit 3 large ones there, so 700+ watts. Need to check if that makes sense. Ideally we would be self sufficient electricity wise and run the generator for watermaking only.

4. overall capacity. The mastervolt comes in 180Ah. So 2 or 3? I need to write a full list of consumption and work it out.

Regarding access to support, it's a bit murkier. (The Symms seem to have negative view of Mastervolt but I've just come across them and I'll discount their views until I'm convinced of their integrity. Maybe they didn't get goodies from them and badmouth them as a result. The problem with funding one's lifestyle with 'reviews' and shoutouts.)

I hope the generalisation of lithium batteries will make access to support more widely available. Mastervolt is rather global by the looks of it. Worse come to the worse, it's always possible to 'downgrade'  back to lead.

When I get to a conclusion I'll share the analysis that lead there. Obviously happy to hear more thoughts.
