Hello to all those who have requested impeller pullers, including Giovanni.

We are ramping up the production line tomorrow (Oct 1) [it isn't a very
big production line as we only make 10 at a time] and should be able to
ship by Tuesday Oct 2nd. Thanks for the interest and for the alternative
suggestions. Isn't this site great for exchanging information on how to
best care for our boats?

Gary,

Based on the symptoms you have noticed I agree that bearing replacement is a
good idea. Certainly any sign of water from the grease holes is cause for
concern.

I do not allow pressure washing of the prop. I use a combination of a
scraper and brass brush to remove any fouling and residual anti-fouling, then
"polish" the prop with a VERY fine polishing wheel on my cordless (weak) drill. A
bit laborious, but does a nice job.

While in the water I dive about three or four times a season and clean the
prop with the same scraper and brush. So far, no problems. The best indicator
for cleaning is maximum, flat water RPMs. As soon as they start to drop I know
it is diving time.

Initially I did not anti-foul the prop, but left it as delivered in La
Rochelle. However, during an Amel service in Hyeres a few years ago they
recommended applying a two part, spray on Intenational prop anti-fouling product. It
seemed to reduce the fouling, but there are so many variables I can't be sure.
It does increase the prop polishing work a bit. This year I applied a
similar product available and highly recommended here in Spain. Time will tell.

I've also heard of a professionally applied Australian product that produces
a clear, slippery surface that is supposed to be effective. A world cruising
friend from Seattle came through Barcelona last winter and found his prop
clean after two years. However, he had been underway most of the time, so who
knows?

Brutons rep at the London boat show a few years ago and he said that
replacement was only necessary if you experienced symptoms and that in a
well
maintained prop (regularly cleaned, polished and greased) they should not
occur until
"thousands" of hours of use. My prop currently has about 1400 hours and
works smoothly.

Dan, I don't have a Webasto, but I installed a Wallas diesel heater. It was the simplest one I could find as I didn't want to run any ducts throughout the boat and I only wanted to heat the main cabin. I took off the existing light over the slide-out main cabin berth and installed the unit there only drilling one small addional hole. The mounting bracket uses only 2 holes. I used the existing wires for the light to power the unit and ran the small diesel hose behind the bunk, down into the floor lockers and aft to the engine room and into the top of the fuel tank.Very easy. I then drilled the hole for the exaust through the cabin side through the black plastic aft of fixed cabin window. I bought the side mounted exaust unit. I can take the system out easily later and have little repair work to .We're in Chile now where its chilly, and its working just fine. See photos under "Moon Dog". John SM 248

There is an alternative, really simple, means of accessing the Onan impeller.
1. Simply disconnect the two water pipes ( by loosening the two jubilee clips and pulling the pipes off the pump)
2. Undo the two bolts which attach the pump to the engine. There is no seal between the pump and the engine but the first time you detach the pump you may have to give it a tap to part it from the engine.
3.With the pump now free you can sit in the cockpit with it, pour yourself a beer and withdraw and replace the impeller at your leisure.
The only downside is that your excuse for colourful language and skinned knuckles is somewhat reduced.

Photo attached. The davits are, from memory rated at 250kg+. Our dinghy weighs 32kg and the outboard the same so all up no more than 75kg which gives a lot of spare capacity.

Given this, we notice no apopreciable trim variation.

Sorry have no info on the fibreglass arch and I do not have aphotograph. Hopefully someone might contribute.

We took delivery of Amel 54 No 56, Caduceus, in May 2007 and are delighted with it.

We took the only davit option currently offered, the SL electric. We like them and they are easy to use. Do note however that they are placed on the outside of the stern and are hence a longer distance apart than on many other 54 footers. We have a Southern Pacific Shearwater 3.2m dinghy that was bought because of its light weight, and it just fits, anything smaller would have been a problem. Anything too much bigger would also be a problem as it would be wider than the stern. The davits are definately overkill for this size of dinghy but they do work well.

The attached photograph may help explain. If it does not arrive due to Yahoo, let me know and I will send it directly to your email.

The main difficulty that we have encountered is that we cannot raise the dinghy fully, for travelling, with the outboard in situ. This would have required a larger dinghy which as I have explained, we did not want.

We have seen other 54's fitted with a white fibreglass arch that supports dinghy davits and provides a platform for solar panels, wind generators etc. These are not either supplied by Amel or approved and have been fitted elsewhere. We cannot help with any further information, perhaps other owners can?

I don't recall this being discussed on the forum before.

I purchased the overhaul kit that includes the bearings, seals and
the special wrench from AB Marine last year. It does not include
the small lubricating hole plug screws or their o-rings. The cost
for that kit, the wrench, a half dozen screws and o-rings was
$507 USD. (A bit on the expensive side I thought.)

I haven't done the job yet so I can't comment how hard it is or the
before and after results. I was planning on doing it just as routine
preventative maintenance as I hit the 600 hour mark.

Autpprop bearings - Replacement

I may be asking questions that have already been addressed but the
search engine is not working. Has any one replaced the bearings on the
SM2000 Autoprop? How difficult is it? Did you noticed a clear
improvement after (vibration, noise, performance..) ? How many hours
did you go before relacing the bearings?
Any help will be appreciated.

True a pair of right angle needle nose will work, (although those pictured
are too long for clearance between the fuel tank and the pump cavity on
my boat). The problem is getting a good grip with needle nose (due to the
