Thanks for the reply.  I check the water at the kitchen sink faucet, since I don't have a sampling tap.

I tend to run the watermaker at the middle of the green zone on the guage, but the sightglass is pegged at the top of the glass.  I'll start running it below 60 and see if the water improves.

Yes, the O-Rings were replaced as well as the interconnector.

Is the blue hose you mentioned accessed through the portside lazarrete?

JP,

I use a "Total Dissolved Solids" meter from HM Digital.  I believe it uses electrical resistivity to give a TDS measurement.  I use the water drawn from the kitchen sink.

Our boat had coppercoat of an unknown age, with some patches.
We had the the hull stripped back in Trinidad and reapplied Coppercoat ourselves. The yard tried to persuade us to apply two coats of epoxy to the hull first. Coppercoat told us to apply straight on to the clean hull since it is an epoxy coating in itself . We did this.
If you do it yourself a team of 4-6 people could do the job in a day with one person continually supplying the mixed epoxy. Linda and I on our own took 3 days - but that was in the heat in Trinidad!
You do need to thin the Coppercoat with rubbing alcohol to roller it on. The total cost was around£1300.00, but we had imported the Coppercoat from UK and avoided VAT. Of course the smaller hull needed less.
Did you have a breakdown of the costs?

This will depend greatly on the area you are cruising in, for example our 2001 Super Maramu 2000 cost us $3000 pa in Australian waters with Panteanius and almost $7000pa with the same company for Asia and Indian Ocean. We just moved to Velos which was about $6000 pa for Asia west and Indian Ocean (based on boat value of $395,000).

Having gone through all the comparisons recently each company varies hugely and you have to read absolutely every line in the fine print, for example Panteanius pays absolutely nothing if your boat is taken by pirates and their excess (or deductables) were 5x the amount of Velos, however they were far superior in covering personal accidents, covered us 100% for single handed sailing and had a number of other benefits plus were a pleasure to deal with.

Good luck with it but take care, there are huge differences and you need to firstly decide what is most appropriate for your needs and sailing plans.

I have found Deltaville (VA) Boatyard dies very good work and knows Amel's.  They're a bit more expensive than some, but I was always happy with their work.

  • We put some roach-traps in the boat but had no roaches in, some boats had
  • Filled the diesel  tank full with diesel and put additive in it
  • And did all the standard stuff for winterizing (engine etc.)
  • And: Ask Sue what she recommends to avoid „insects“ enter the boat at the save storage

I was hoping that someone would answer that has actually left a boat on the hard in Trinidad. I have not, but if I were, I would do the following:
  1. I would protect the boat from UV. Custom-made plastic shrink-covers are available, but if you plan to do this for a number of seasons, maybe you should check the cost of having a storage cover made. 
  2. Humidity is an issue in Trinidad, and even though your boat is a dry one, I think that I would rent a window-type AC made for the companionway. Peakes will put you in touch with someone who can help you with this. Last year, I saw a SM that had one at the companionway with a piece of plywood cut to fill in the rest of the area and with a padlock hasp attached to lock it all. The AC will take care of removing the humidity. As you know there is a dehumidifier on BeBe. This will not work unattended because if power is lost, it will not automatically restart, someone has to press the start button.
  3. I would buy some pesticide and liberally spray everything that touches the dirt (stands & braces). The deadlier the product, the better. The biggest issue on a SM at Peaks may be ants or even termites...ask Peaks about this.
  4. Store the dinghy (locked) on deck and protect it from UV. The outboard should be stored lying on its side on a well-padded salon table...there might be some gasoline inside the engine, so be prepared and drain it first...check the manual. It should only be laid on only one side...check the manual as I have forgotten which side. An alternate place to store it would be the cockpit lazarette or the port side locker where you can lower it standing up.
  5. I would store all sails & sheets and all bimini pieces inside the boat. There is a special cockpit storage panel made out of the same material as the bimini to use to protect the cockpit controls. It is under the aft berth in a bag of the same material.
  6. Hire Dwayne or someone to check on the boat once a week and send you an email...Peaks may offer this service. It is not uncommon for vessels to become unplugged while on the hard. Have the person check for power and that the AC is working. Have them visually check the interior and battery monitor.
  7. If I were you, I would make sure that the water tank is full and leave the water maker automatic rinsing system ON. The timer is set to rinse for 4 minutes, twice a week.
  8. Trinidad can have some serious rain storms. Be sure the deck drains freely, especially the stbd side around the SSB antenna. In fact, I would probably remove the SSB antenna from the deck and plug the screw holes with RTV until you return, then remount it. The issue is that deck drainage can be severely restricted in this area and if the aft lazarette is not completely secure or sealed, you may get rain water inside the lazarette.

Hello Alex,

I believe the boat you are referring to is ours, as we were in the Island Water World marina for March and April, and not with the boat for part of the time. We had our canvas done by Superb Canvas in Trinidad last June. They have there shop in the Powerboats yard next to Peakes. The owner of the company is Sean, and it's a family operation with his wife, mother and kids working there as well. We completely redesigned all of our cockpit canvas, and I found them easy to work with, and the work was well above average. The price was about the same as anyone else in the area.

I am certain that you will find more than one source in Trinidad.

We used a sailmaker on the island of Carriacou 10 years ago and it is still in good condition. We also had them make shade screens for the front windshields to protect the plexiglas from UV of the sun. Our efforts were to provide shade while at anchor and sailing.

However, I heard from another AMEL owner that he had someone in Trinidad doing that job. If you know who I may contact in Trinidad (as I plan to do down to Grenada for the HS anyway), I'd really appreciate the information.

Dan,

I was hoping that someone would answer that has actually left a boat on the hard in Trinidad. I have not, but if I were, I would do the following:
  1. I would protect the boat from UV. Custom-made plastic shrink-covers are available, but if you plan to do this for a number of seasons, maybe you should check the cost of having a storage cover made. 
  2. Humidity is an issue in Trinidad, and even though your boat is a dry one, I think that I would rent a window-type AC made for the companionway. Peakes will put you in touch with someone who can help you with this. Last year, I saw a SM that had one at the companionway with a piece of plywood cut to fill in the rest of the area and with a padlock hasp attached to lock it all. The AC will take care of removing the humidity. As you know there is a dehumidifier on BeBe. This will not work unattended because if power is lost, it will not automatically restart, someone has to press the start button.
  3. I would buy some pesticide and liberally spray everything that touches the dirt (stands & braces). The deadlier the product, the better. The biggest issue on a SM at Peaks may be ants or even termites...ask Peaks about this.
  4. Store the dinghy (locked) on deck and protect it from UV. The outboard should be stored lying on its side on a well-padded salon table...there might be some gasoline inside the engine, so be prepared and drain it first...check the manual. It should only be laid on only one side...check the manual as I have forgotten which side. An alternate place to store it would be the cockpit lazarette or the port side locker where you can lower it standing up.
  5. I would store all sails & sheets and all bimini pieces inside the boat. There is a special cockpit storage panel made out of the same material as the bimini to use to protect the cockpit controls. It is under the aft berth in a bag of the same material.
  6. Hire Dwayne or someone to check on the boat once a week and send you an email...Peaks may offer this service. It is not uncommon for vessels to become unplugged while on the hard. Have the person check for power and that the AC is working. Have them visually check the interior and battery monitor.
  7. If I were you, I would make sure that the water tank is full and leave the water maker automatic rinsing system ON. The timer is set to rinse for 4 minutes, twice a week.
  8. Trinidad can have some serious rain storms. Be sure the deck drains freely, especially the stbd side around the SSB antenna. In fact, I would probably remove the SSB antenna from the deck and plug the screw holes with RTV until you return, then remount it. The issue is that deck drainage can be severely restricted in this area and if the aft lazarette is not completely secure or sealed, you may get rain water inside the lazarette.

Some key questions for me are:
