Oliver, it is better to use the 230V 50 amp plug. The 110-230V step up transformer is limited in its capabilities and can get rather hot. If you have the electrician at Deltaville follow the instructions you have been given ( Eric is an electrical engineer from MIT as well as a jeweler, a bon vivant and… ) you will be better served by the 230V system

 

The 110V step up transformer is something we developed to ease North Americans into a boat buying decision as these clients are generally uncertain about 230V power. Once they got their boat in la Rochelle and had Olivier Beaute show them that 230V works better for everything, hardly anyone used the 110V step up transformer.

 

Be VERY CAREFUL regarding 60 cycle USA 230V which will destroy things that require 50 cycle European 230V. You can only use the battery chargers, the air conditioning and the hot water heater when plugged into USA 230V 60 cycle shore power. TURN ALL THE OTHER 230V CIRCUIT BREAKERS OFF AT THE MASTER 230V PANEL.

On my boat we have the additional Amel equipment of a 110 V Transformator. I think that the 30 Amp US plug has only 3 wires. Could it be better using the 110V Transfo?

I'm a little bit concerned because the marina told me that a former Amel almost burned because the 110V Transfo on board got to hot. I couldn't believe it, because I thought that it was made from Amel for using it in the US.

If the marina only has 30 Amp 125 Volt shore power AND your vessel is equipped with the Transformer then this might help you.

Your original email said nothing of a transformer. How can we know how to answer your questions without​ all of the information?

I strongly suggest that you ask the marina for a certified electrician.

Hi Oliver,

It is very simple  to convert a European plug to a USA plug.

Purchase a 50 amp USA plug similar to the one in the link below..

This can be purchased in almost any chandlery.

Disassemble your European plug. You will find a brown, Blue, and Yellow/green wires.

 

When you open the USA 50 amp plug you will find 4 connection points. Red, White, Black, and Green.

Connect the yellow green boat wire to the green terminal, connect either the blue or the brown to the black USA terminal, and connect the other wire to the to the red USA terminal.

The white terminal in the USA plug is not used.

 

When this is assembled fill the hole in the in the USA plug with silicone as the 50 amp cables  in the USA are much bigger.

Aft berthing bulkhead replacement - Santorin Sloop

Hi all,

I'm looking for someone that has intimate construction knowledge of the Santorin - most likely Oliver.

The aft berthing bulkhead has soaked up some water and it looks like a previous owner had the center section of wood cut out and replaced and then the backstay rebedded (she's a sloop SN 27, 1990, formerly Akwaaba). I've spoken with Chris, the previous owner and she has put me in contact with the person that did the previous work, which I will meet later today.

The water intrusion has also affected the original wood which will also need replaced.

I'm asking if anyone can give knowledge on the construction of the aft bulkhead (purely wood tabbed into the hull? Or fiberglass backing in the aft storage locker? Etc) as well has how the structure integrity of the backstay was originally made.

The water intrusion was parts of: 1) aft locker seal needs replaced 2) the drain plug had been kept in and allowed water accumulation 3) which seeped through a cable conduit that the caulking had failed

all of this started seeping up from the center bottom portion of the bulkhead.

Personally, if I had to do it again, I would do a quick check myself (leaks, etc.) then hire Olivier. You can’t find a more knowledgeable person than him on Amel.

Hello all,

Would anyone have a pre purchase inspection checklist?

I am viewing today a pre 2k Super Maramu for the first time which we have made an offer on.

Olivier has given me advice about some particular items to check, (thank you again) would anyone have a check list which for the more obvious items to check?

We have engaged a local surveyor who has inspected Amels on 3 occasions and I was a marine engineer till 5 years ago, I have a bit of an understanding but I know that I shall easily look over the obvious items without comprehensive check list from an experienced owner.

Thank you for the suggestions and help.  I apologize for not getting back to you earlier.  It's been a busy time for us.

Eric,  the Control Unit is separate from the burner unit and mounted next to the Current Regulator.  I have the manufacturers technical data booklet (including install instructions).

Ian, as you suggested I removed the duct from the inlet (aft) end and had Peg turn it off and on.  The blower did not turn at all.  I did hear a distinct "click" from the Control Unit, which I verified by holding a screwdriver to the CU and my ear.  

You noted that if a relay was working it was likely not the Control Unit, but may be a PCB at the aft end of the burner unit.  Could you give me an idea where to access the PCB?

Thanks Bill.  I was looking at those last night.
I think the position on the pot might be compromised some!!  but what price clean clothes.   JP is on the case too in Martinique.  He’s been very helpful in the past.  Re the inverter- I guess I’d have to run wire up to the bow from the battery bank, correct?  

seems like a pretty big deal.

     I agree with Joel on the converting 50 to 60hz.   I remember the other day, you saying that you were looking at getting a "transformer" to convert power but didn't think about it until we had left for Charleston.  Either the beer or the discussions about Shakespeare distracted me.  :) 

I found Martinique to have a lot more shopping resources than the other islands especially for 230/50hz equipment.  My washer was working when we left or I would have bought one there.  I did however shop for an icemaker and noted many appliance stores with compact washers.  I'm sure there would be one that fits the 54.  The large mall near the airport called the Galleria has an appliance store that appeared to have a good inventory.  

St. Maarten, at least the stores I went to had 60hz appliances so that might not be a good place to shop.  It is my understanding that the island is all 60hz.  


  If you do head back toward Martinique and intend to spend any significant money on equipment or service on the boat, look up Douglas Rapier (Douglas Yacht Services.)   He is a French customs broker and for a fee can set you up with a VAT exemption number that relieves you of having to pay VAT tax on any purchase related to the boat. He also speaks fluent English.    I used the VAT exemption without issues for the rerigging work at Caraibe and at Amel for parts and servicing.  
​Douglas assured me it would work throughout the island.

Much easier to ship an EU compliant unit into an EU territory than to send it here to north American.

 

Or, perhaps some sympathetic Amel owner in Europe will find you a unit that will work, arrange for you to send them the money to pay for it, and have it delivered to a FREIGHT FORWARDER who will know how to get it shipped to you here. If you do that, I suggest J.P. Reynolds here in Fort Lauderdale as your receiving freight forwarder here. They have been flawless serving my and my clients Amel interests for over three decades. Don’t pay me nuthin’, not even a bottle of Scotch at Christmas. Ask for Jay, tell him you are an Amel customer, jay@...  . 954-522-3765.  . Jay has also done the importation/duty payment on every Amel I have sold with very few exceptions. Good guy. Knows the business inside and out. Easy to work with.

 

Try not to change stuff/add sysytems as your Amel is brand new to you. Give it some time to get under your skin before you change anything.

I made one search on Electrolux and found four that would fit.

Capacaty for them is 6 kg. The first one is the one I would have choosen since it have protection for variation in the voltage, and shuts down and restart from where it was in the program if short of power.
