Re: unending flow
greatketch@...
Kent,
Your problem is not from a check valve, but from air that is entrained under the boat filling the seachest. Like every design decision on a boat, the seachest has its good points--and its problems. One of the issues is that when sailing, it fills with air. If you have ever put a video camera under your boat when sailing, you've seen a steady stream of bubbles flowing from bow to stern even at relatively modest speeds. Every one of those bubbles that manages to go under the main intake thru-hull rises up and displaces water from the seachest. After a fairly short time, the seachest is full of air. This means that any pump drawing out of the seachest, needs to clear a fairly significant volume of air before it can pump water. I suspect this dry run time on every startup underway is part of the reason so many people have had such troublesomely short lifespans from impellers on their gensets. Of course, this happens with every thru-hull, no matter if there is a seachest or not. The issue with the seachest is that it can hold a LOT more air than a simple hose connection. The previous owner of Harmonie installed a very small pump plumbed from the seachest manifold to to the cockpit scupper that can be used to clear this air before running either of the engines. I think with the toilet flush pump, you'll just have to live with the delay, unless somebody has a solution I haven't thought of yet! I should say that on Kristy, (SM 243) there are separate thru-hulls for the seawater fill pumps located in the little "hallway" just inboard of the heads. She does NOT have the long hoses from the sea chest/manifold in the engine room. Thanks for any suggestions. Kent SM243 Kristy Currently St. Michaels, MD, USA for the hurricane season.

Onan Zinc and Outdated Marine Electronics Repairs
pstas2003 <no_reply@...>
Hello to all.
Recently, I went to change the zinc on the Onan Generator, and when I unbolted the plug, I found the old zinc corroded in place. At first I thought I would drill it out and replace it with a new one. Then the thought occurred to me, “why not just wait until it dissolves on its own”? Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. I also wanted to pass along some information. Recently I began to have trouble with an old Raymarine RL80C Chart Plotter. I contacted Dan Gerhardt who had been recommended on this forum, but he doesn’t repair chart plotters. He recommended I call Steve Senft at Jaytron in Florida (steve at marineelectronics dot com - 941-748-1941). After trouble shooting things on the phone with him, I ended up sending the unit to him. Unfortunately, after spending a number of hours on it, it was determined it was too far gone. However, he sold me a used unit he had in house for about the same cost as the repair would have been. Based on my experience, I can highly recommend him for those of you who have some old equipment that you may not be ready to replace just yet, and need repair assistance. He spent a good deal of time with me on the phone and via email, and helped me get what I needed for a very fair price. He also moved me up in line so I would have a unit back in my hands, in time to travel back to the boat this weekend. I hope someone will find this information useful and thank you in advance for any responses regarding the Onan Zinc. All the best, Paul Stascavage SM #466 - s/v Rita Kathryn Saint Lucia RitaKathryn.com

ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Bill and Danny,
Thanks. I have emailed Reya in Toulon , sent a photo and details of the problem so hope they will be able to fix it.
If not, I will come back to this site to see if anyone else has recommendations for alternatives. Unfortunately, Reya now make a 40 amp whose dimensions are too big for my space or a 20 amp which I could fit if I put it sideways, but I'm not sure how the fan would like that.

Jeff, I have been trying to get the specifics on the solenoid fresh water flush valve on your 54. I have only been able to verify that it is Burkert type 6213, but not sure of the exact variant. If I do not get back to you in the next 48 hours, I suggest doing the following: Using the attached drawing, disassemble the valve, clean it and reassemble it using silicone grease on all rubber-like parts. And/Or - Order a replacement from Amel taking a photo of the numbers on the valve. Mohamad, Now, you have part of it...see the following link: http://www.burkert-usa.com/en/type/6213 But, there are 20-30 variations of the 6213 and none of the variations list 125667. Hi bill; the number I posted was right off the part. However, since you posted that you could not locate it, I checked again and there is also a number 6213A on the part that maybe the correct number that burkert goes by. I can post a picture of any one is interested. Respectfully; Mohammad and Aty B&B Kokomo AMEL 54 #099

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] unending flow

Bob, I believe that Amel did not use the Jabsco brand control valve which is shown in that video, rather used a much better German made control valve made by "Burkert and the part number is 125657." Amel has a history of using Burkert control valves. The solenoid for the cooking gas(z) is made by Burkert and it rarely fails...and it costs 3-4 times more than the typical West Marine solenoid valve. It is likely that the BURkert can also be cleaned. Mohammad and Aty on B&B Kokomo is the one that gave me the part number of 125657, which I have not been able to locate. I think something is wrong with that part number. Best, CW Bill Rouse Admiral, Texas Navy Commander Emeritus Amel School www.amelschool.com 720 Winnie St Galveston Island, TX 77550 +1(832) 380-4970

Battery charger for SM
ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>
Hi all,
After 17 years of valiant service our 30 amp, 24v charger has died. The green light still shines brightly and the fan works, but no output. A local electrician has pronounced a problem with the circuit board. I have written to Reya to see if they will repair it, but they are not known as quick correspondents.
The thing I love about the Dolphin charger is that it is small and light ( less than 5 kg ). To replace it means finding another which is no more than 28cm high and 34 wide. The depth isn't critical.
Has anyone had success in
a) getting Reya to repair an old Dolphin, or
b) finding a suitable alternative which can fir in the same space ?

Jeff; The manufacturer of the valve on Kokomo is Burkert and the part number is 125657. It is a 24V 1/2" valve female threaded both sides. We could not find the same in Turkey quickly, so a local marine supplier was able to find an equivalent with exact same electrical and plumbing connections. 1/2 hour of work and so far everything is working fine.
