Hi Chris ,
If you have the 78hp Volvo , which I guess you do , Amel governed it down to 60hp  ,2800 revs , because above that you are just burning fuel to no effect . At 2800 with a clean hull and prop on a flat calm day you should get over 8 k , maybe 8.5

I have already cleaned the tank and the diesel and I have changed the turbo charger because  the clap could be moved.

Hi Trevor,

The hull and the prop were cleaned completely last year and I had the same situation not more speed than 6 knots.

I thought also about barncacle growth but after cleaning hull and prop there was no remarkable change after it.

Hi Elja,

You can find some more posts about this at the group site.
If it is the same as on our SM2K 2001 it is a Calpeda B-CM 20, sold through Climma/Veco.

You can find details on the web.

Hi Chris,

I have just changed my turbo charger and I don't get 3500 RPM at the moment. An overhaul of the trubo is for sure not bad, but maybe you won't get your envisaged result.

I thought first that I had a bad diesel or some bugs in the tank. The diesel is cleaned and the tank as well.

With all this I get max RPM 2900. Maybe I have to overhaul the engine specially the injection pump and at last also the injectors.

For your case if you get 2800 rpm so maybe no for sure the turbo charger is working and can't be blocked. Blocked turbo get max rpm 1900 to 2100.

Maybe you get a note when the last big service on the machine was done.

In may case I Need a big service, because my SM was not moved for 3 years before i bought it.

Concerning the Generator, be careful, that you get also a note, that the anodes were changed recently. I used my Generator for about 10 hours and I had to change the pump and the heat exchanger as well, because both were corroded and were leaking.

Have good luck, many pleasant moments on your SM.

Fair winds and also a handsome water under the keel

Hi again Chris,
Kristy is my first sailboat, and my first big boat.  I was the absolute worst about asking questions that now seem straightforward.  The folks on this group were happy to take me by the hand and explain in detail how to diagnose and repair everything I asked about. No question is regarded as too simple to answer.  Without the group's help I probably would have given up after a year or two.  While I've learned a lot, I still learn something new with every question posed and the answers given.  Fire away, cousin Amelian!

Kristy is SM 243, built in 1998-99.  She came with a Volvo TMD22, 78 HP.  There was an AutoProp and a fixed spare aboard. I spent  $5000+ trying to figure out why she wouldn't get over 2300 rpm. (With the AutoProp OR the spare fixed prop). I finally got the numbers off the AutoProp, and Bruntons (AutoProp mfg) told me it was the prop recommended for an SM with the 100HP Yanmar.  Amel said they used the same prop for both engines.  I had the fixed prop checked by a prop shop and was told that it, too, was over-propped for my boat and engine.  I had the fixed prop repitched per their recommendation, and voila! 3200 rpm.
The only thing I didn't do was service the AutoProp, which I understand needs to be done every couple of years, even if the blades spin freely on the hub, and don't have noticeable wobble.  Others have had the same problem of low rpm that was solved by servicing the prop.

Amel sent me a one-page explanation of how they prop their boats which has as much to do with torque as horsepower.  I think it is in the interest of efficiency.  Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

Bruntons also told me that the model AutoProp had been discontinued, and that new blades were no longer available.

Hope that helps.

Chris,
I havevan older SM with the fixed blade prop and a newer Volvo TMD 22 engine.  Our max rpm is also 2800 with the fixed blade.  The engine runs like a top and has zero smoke.  Perhaps this is to be expected with the fixed blade prop?

I have the EasyView  right to the switch of the onan switchboard. This year they have a new version which connects to USB for programming. I have the grey version and no color display and needed an extra masterbus-usb . I am in contact with the masterVolt in Germany called mareteam and they will update my mastervolt inverters charger with new software via teamviewer.

Thanks Peregrinus,

I omitted that I mentioned that (the lack of mode and the potential need to setup the charger with a constant voltage output) to the UK guy and he basically said not to bother as the charge cycle would be over in 17mins and the voltage constant after that, and that the loads could take the cycle anyway.

Thanks for mentioning the MasterAdjust software, I'm going to need to get familiar with that indeed. Do you have the masterVolt EasyView device? Is it permanently fitted and, if yes, where?

Thanks,

You are correct.  The zinc has separated from the brass bolt.  I’m going to investigate things a little further when we get back on the boat tomorrow,  I think it is sound advice to remove the whole heat exchanger and get it all cleaned out.
