Wow Mike, I replaced my worn origional gearboxes and had no problem with the outhaul shaft.  My plastic mounting spacers look a tad fragile for the bottle jack anyway.  Now the mail furler shaft was more challenging.  I tried tapping it out but very quickly realized it was aluminium and was mushrooming from my efforts.   I took it to a machine shop where they used a press.  I too was liberal with the antisieze during reassembly.  

A quick thought,  is the bottle jack pressing on the deck?  Is there sufficient support under the deck for the potential full capacity of the jack?  Obviously you didn't have trouble but if the shaft were really stuck 4 tons sounds like a lot of load on the cabin top.


I have the older Bonfiglioli gears,   which incidentally required no shaving to fit on the boom or main mast.  I also drilled and tapped holes for grease fittings..ala Bill Rouse.

My original gears were both bone dry,  the main furler gearbox  pinion gear bearing had disintegrated into red dust. Previous owner apparently applied grease only to the outside... 

The Bonfiglioli part numbers cited on the Forum were correct and gears were obtained directly from local Bonfig dealer  in South Carolina and matched boat parts perfectly. I think price was $216 USD.

So it appears that the picture attachments worked.

Couple of other notes. The ¼” gap between the chrome trim and the wood threshold of the companionway could easily be filled with a black caulk struck off vertically for an aesthetic and waterproof finish to the installation. Also as I noted, 2 48” pieces are provided, so I have a couple of 24” “spares” if anyone wants one.

I am a big advocate of buying original parts. I have sent Dessalator an email requesting the correct kit for my model. 

Trident silicon grease is a staple on my boat. I use it for all my diving equipment and anytime I change a filter  (water) on this boat. 

There are definitely ways to get creative when ordering parts for your Amel however, original parts are a necessity in most cases... Bow thruster and C drive are perfect examples. 

Having the correct sizes to write down is just one of my many MOO's.

I'll check in with a local rigger and see if there is something similar that might do the trick. 

The broken bit is supposed to slip into a hole on the inboard end of the main /large pole. Perhaps this is a fairly standard piece of kit. 
I've only used poles that attach to movable ring bolts on mast tracks before but I'll do some hunting!

I do not know how (or if) the Maramu fittings are different, but on my Super Maramu the pole fittings were made by FranceSpar. The infallible (not!) internet says that FranceSpar stopped production in 1990.  My boat was built in 1996, with what I assume were parts from Amel's stock.  At some point I imagine they ran out, and newer boats probably have something from another manufacturer.

I do not know if they were standard catalog items, but they seem very similar to standard big boat spinnaker pole fittings.  An experienced rigger ought to be able to help put something together that will replicate the design if Amel can't help you with parts.

Here is a snarky comment from "you know who." It is not meant to be to you, but to rather anyone who would make the risk of buying these O rings from anyone but Dessalator. Yes, Dessalator does not make them, and Yes, Dessalator knows the correct sizes.

Changing the O rings on a $10,000 Dessalator system is not necessarily an easy job that you want to repeat because you tried to save a few $s and find other O Rings. HINT: always use TRIDENT brand pure silicone grease found at dive shops on the O rings.

Of course you know I make this remark because it is my job to remind everyone to use OEM Systems and Parts. I know it sounds like I get commission on their purchases.😀 I don't. My only purpose is to say, in many cases, the RISK is not worth the REWARD.

OK, I can go back to dealing with the aftermath of HARVEY.

Dimensions - Sails UV panels.

I need to change the UV panels on my sails.  The sail are in VG condition as the PO hardly used the boat after new sails were added.

Does anybody know the dimensions of the sails so we can order the anti UV cloth in sufficient quantity? … needs delivery to Panama and we don’t have much time from order to delivery.

This may interest those of you currently in Europe looking for filmtec SW30-2521 membranes.

inaqua.de as recommended by Robin does provide them at a good price, but didn't have any in stock.

We ordered ours from www.Lenntech.com who are based in the Netherlands. They had the membranes at 175EUR/ 211EUR (+VAT), a good selection of filters /cartridges etc, good shipping fees and timelines and helpful staff. Membranes were delivered wet (we didn't get to choose).

Do you mind me asking how you got the o-ring measurements for the watermaker (I don't suppose you got the info from Dessalator ...)

How accurate do the watermaker o-ring measurements discussed in previous posts need to be? 
  • 9.0 by 1.5 mm N70
  • 19.0 by 2.5 mm N70
  • 53.0 X 3.5 mm N70 

I found some sites but their measurements are sometimes to the 1/100 of mm for example:

FYI, Dessalator charge 40EUR for an o-ring kit containing (4 small,2med,4large) ... One kit covers one tube, and the DUO100 dessalator has three of those... The o-rings look as plain as o-rings can be...and the interconnect ones seems to break very easily...

So we are looking for an alternative source for common o-rings at a common price to stock up... if anyone could recommend an EU/UK provider..

Not a bad option if you really want to see Santa Marta. A one week stay in the marina if you get the 30% discount offered on there add in Caribbean Compass would be $181 plus tax, water, and electricity. The rate for for 5 days is slightly higher due to daily vs weekly rate. I'm guessing from a money standpoint, it is probably a wash between checking in in Santa Marta and going direct to Cartagena and hiring the required agent to do the paperwork.

With respect to Latin American countries they use Roman Law versus law based upon the Magna Charta.

Everything depends on the weight of evidence thus pages of notarized papers with your huella (fingerprint )on the pages. I have a Colombian passport so it is a little easier for me. Regardless where you go t takes time. They do have an agent in the marina to clear you in and out. However you have to weigh that against having and incredibly dirty boat in Santa Marta.

Normally it takes a week to have all the clearance done, if you come during a weekend custom do not come until Monday to start the process with them, migration normally is in the same day of your arrival, for leaving you tell the agent a day before (working day) so he can make the paperwork for departure (Zarpe).

I think this is not the best offer actually available for Maramus.
Some months ago I bought a Sharki build in 1982 for half the price.
Ok, the Sharki is smaller but is below the magic lenght of 12 m to get lower marina fees.
A real teak deck is not what an Amel usually has. They have an artificial teak deck which is far better because it is more resistent against sun and weather.
I am in Monastir, Tunisia with the Sharki and benefit from the low prices there. Repainting the whole deck last month for the Sharki was for less than 1000 Euro. They are doing nice jobs in stainless steel also.
There are also some other swiss boat owners in the Monastir marina.
