Thanks Bill.  It sounds like you're happy with the P79 depth sounder looking through the glass bottom.  I will probably add that so I'll have a backup depth in case the old B&G fails.

Thanks for sharing that good experience with me Steve.  I'm still looking at options, and may not do anything right now unless I find a good option that fits the existing old EchoPilot transducer hole.  My old depth sounder and boat speed still work, and I'm waiting to see what new forward sonars come out in the next year or two.

Re: hawse pipe repair

John,
I had the hawse pipe replaced by a stainless steel one.
Yes, the small backing plate is part of the pipe.
I am not an engineer, but do feel that the pipe, which is glassed to deck and floor, does give additional support to the windlass.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] RPMs

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi Pat,

I pretend no expertise other than experience. My TMD22 showed the same symptoms. The seized waste gate causes over pressurization by the turbo. The waste gate is there to control the pressure delivered and as the revs rise it progressively opens. Over pressurization over time causes damage to the piston rings leading to loss of compression and lack of power. I went through all the processes of turbo, injectors, injector pump, fuel systems, you name it, I did it. In the end it came to a choice. Over haul the engine or replace it. I replaced it with the Volvo  D 2 75. I hope your problem has a more simple solution.

Two warnings: 1) The function of the waste gate is critical and needs to be checked periodically.

2) If any member is considering a replacement of a 75 or 80 hp engine Amel advised me that the C drive on the boats fitted with these engines cannot carry the load of a 100 hp engine. The 100 hp models had an upgraded C drive

Pat, the fact you can get to 3000rpm in neutral doesn’t tell us much. It is the load that is causing the problem. The engine is not generating enough energy to offset the applied load. Fuel is energy. This usually means fuel issues. The more load, the more fuel is needed to create the horsepower.

Where you able to get to 3000 rpm right before you changed the filters? Or, was this something you did to try to fix the issue?

Here are some additional thoughts on fuel:

Do you have a lift pump for fuel? (not sure on the Volvo and your Amel). If so check the diaphragm,
Air in fuel lines (connections loose). The engine will pull air rather than fuel if it can.
O-rings sitting correctly on fuel filter give a good seal?
If you changed the fuel filter is the new one sitting correctly and sealed?

A couple of other thoughts:

Check for blockage in exhaust hose (not enough air to burn fuel)
I know you said you cleaned the prop but is it possible something is caught in it (piece of rope or fishing line)

Let’s hope it is something this simple J

The engine seems to run smoothly , if it were an injector would you have a noticeable telltale ? Is the fact that in neutral It gets to 3000 rpm mean anything?
Thanks,

White smoke is usually a sign of not enough air intake or failing fuel injector(s). However, white smoke is usually pretty noticeable. You say “a little white smoke” so I would not think it is an indication.

Also, another common issue most people do not check is the throttle linkage. Can you get RPM if you go down to the engine an manually move the throttle?

Else, I would start with the fuel system and work from there.
“replaced both fuel filters” did you replace them with the same type?

Tubo failure will usually pump out black smoke.

I have not been able to get above 2200 rpms , normally I have always gotten to 3000 at full throttle on my Volvo TMD 22A . I just cleaned my fixed prop and replaced both fuel filters , still won't go beyond 2200 rpm. It will get above 3000 rpm in neutral and I notice a little white smoke. Any thoughts on what could cause the limited rpms in gear . I rebuilt the turbo 3 years ago. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Help with bathing ladder and gangway for Amel Sharki

CAMERON BURNESS

First a thank you to everyone that sent me information regarding the Sharki windlass.
We are currently looking for a replacement motor.
Just a recap my son and I recently purchased a Sharki, #97, 1984. There are a list of jobs that we are working through.
The boat is currently having some work done on the engine in Spain, I am in the UK.

Our bathing ladder and gangway is basically just the frame, a few very poor condition marine ply steps.
I would like to try and restore to original condition, something I can hopefully start preparation on while in the UK.

Does anyone have the dimensions or templates for the ladder steps and the design/measurements of the gangway.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Cameron

[Amel Yacht Owners] Broken Genoa halyard feedback

Sv Garulfo

Hi all,

I would like to report on an issue we had last week in the hope it can help others avoid it.

Our genoa halyard broke during a fairly mild sail (20kn, 120°AWA). It broke at the top. The sail was fully unfurled and stayed up, we simply noticed the bottom part of the luff sagging. We were able to furl it, but only once sufficiently into the wind.

Interestingly, we had lowered the sail last week to repair some stitches before our passage and had inspected that same halyard (there had been a recent thread on this forum on this very topic). The halyard looked fine to me with no obvious sign of chafing. On the broken halyard, I could only see a very small area with chafing.

A couple of days before the halyard broke, we went through a pretty rough crossing of Golfe Du Lion in the Med, with broad reach 35+kn for 24hrs and rough seas with frequent breaking waves that would throw the autopilot off course, resulting in the genoa luffing a bit as the boat would go into the wind. I think this combined with a slight lack of halyard tension resulted in the halyard chafing against the sides of the halyard wrap preventer.

The broken halyard fell inside the mast. I was able to retrieve it from the slot at the bottom of the mast. However it was a real pain as, somehow, an overhand knot created itself during the fall. I had to untie the knot inside the mast through the slit using long and narrow "surgical pliers" (one of my favourite tools onboard). The slit wouldn't let two widths of rope out. Thankfully I hadn't used any force in pulling the halyard and the knot wasn't too tight. What are the odds of such knot creating in this situation?

We sent a messenger from the top, a fishing line weighted with a nut which was very easy to catch at the bottom (those surgical pliers again!). With hindsight it would have been better to use something thicker than a fishing line to avoid it getting between the pulley and its axis...

It then took a few attempts to let the halyard down, as it would get jammed when trying to pull the slack from the bottom with the fishing line. Until we proceeded carefully and made sure there was always tension across the fishing line+halyard to avoid any bends that would get caught by other ropes inside the mast. Once the halyard was retrieved through the slit, we checked that it could move freely both ways.

As a side note, we also needed to remove the genoa and weren't sure if that could be done without the halyard on. It turned out to be ok. In 0 wind, at anchor, the sail gently went down on the last turn or so of the furler.

That's it, check your halyards often, remove the top 50 cm every so often (Bill Rouse reckons 4 years) or anytime it would be a real pain/dangerous to deal with a broken one (long passage). Lack of halyard tension is also a factor in chafing in my opinion.

And many special thanks to Bill Rouse again for his support as we were dealing with the issue over the last few days.

Jobs to do on the hard standing?

smiles bernard

Hello !

I planning on lifting our 1985 Maramu #162 from from the water for a few months. it might actually be 6 months in the end - not 100% sure yet but she is a plane ride away till we pack up jobs and houses and move aboard next spring so i would prefer her out of the water, safer and drying out her hull etc

Once launched again ~ next spring we will be sailing a N Atlantic circuit so i'm wondering what things to do whilst she is ashore

I know i need to change all the seacocks, check anodes, antifoul etc

but also looking for advise about any other jobs eg:

-  rudder servicing : is checking for play/excess movement enough or do folk recommend dropping the rudder and replacing bearings, inspecting pintles etc? On my old boat this was easy but she was tiny and I'm not actually sure how i would drop the rudder in the maramu  in case needed. Any hard won experience with this most welcome!

- prop shaft/ alignment etc i think this is ok - its recently been replaced including cutlass bearing etc but worth a check i supposed  ?

- bow thruster maintenance. She has a pretty new vetus bow thruster so i can look into that

Anything thoughts or experience would be most welcome

Related to this, She is in a sunny part of the world and i've been wondering about a deck cover. She doesn't have one so it'd be expensive but id be interested in others approaches to this too. Worth it for UV protection?

Many thanks in advance folks!

Re: motors for outhaul and furling

Miles

Thank you to everyone for the good advice on dealing with my outhaul motor.  The brushes were hung up and both motors were full of carbon dust and partly shorted from it.   Maud is sending new brushes to me to replace the badly worn ones.  For the 10 years that I had this boat in the Mediterranean,  Amel took care of all these things and I became lazy.  Now, I am learning stuff I should have known.

hawse pipe repair

John Clark

Hi All,

The hawse pipe on Annie is corroded and has a few spots where it has work through.  I intend to tackle this repair in the next few weeks.  Reviewing the forum, as I have learned to do before starting a project,  I see that there is reference to a backing plate for one bolt of the windlass that is embedded in the deck.    Does anyone know if this backing plate is part of the hawse pipe or just near it?

If it is part of the pipe, does the pipe contribute to the support for the windlass?

One repair option I am looking at is to cut the pipe just below the deck and just above the locker floor and fiberglass in a replacement.  While this would be fine for keeping out water and directing the chain it would not provide any meaningful support to the windlass as it pulled up an anchor.

Any thoughts?

Hello Bill,

Iam currently not at the boat. Do you have the measurement of the track where the car is sitting on?
It looks like I have to get a new car due to the old plastic roller is no longer availlable.

Thank you,

Peter,

In the subject, you stated genoa traveller, and in the body you state main sheet.

Antal makes the genoa cars on the Port and Starboard rails. Several owners have obtained these through Antal dealers.

It will be more difficult to find the sheaves on the main sheet traveller, but I suggest you contact a rigger who will have or have access to sheaves. It is also likely that the sheave can be machined. When I was in the Canary Islands, I had sheaves made by a rigger for the end of the mizzen boom.

Good luck, and if I were you, I would always add your hull number and location. Sometimes another owner will know the resources available where you are, or may even be nearby with the part you need.

Good morning Ken and everybody on the Amel Forum,

I haven’t had the time to read all the message on the forum, but will.

The electricity was back, but is now intermittent, I think this is either because the electricity company which was damaged and can not run at full capacity is giving a few hours per district or because they shut the power to work on something then put it back.

We had water, but the cistern is empty… they suspect a leak.

Last Sunday the moral was low and I wanted to leave ASAP, now I am better.
I saved all my cloth, spare parts, etc. and I am not going to leave without them.
I am talking to all the people I can to get or buy a 20ft container and put everything I saved in it then likely go to Martinique.

I don’t think boats would be allow to come in, no more marinas, too many debris and sunk boats, not to mention the looters.

But THANKS to all of you for your support.
I really appreciate it and I hope to meet many of you during your travel.

Moral is low.
I don’t even want to mop the floor.
Just waiting for the generator to get the Wifi
The fridge is warm.
People, including the Hotel employee, are angry.
The government doesn’t sell fuel to civilians.
when we run out of diesel for the generator: no internet, no fridge, no stove, no water for the toilet nor shower and computers, phone, etc. will run out of batteries.
I really don’t see a way out of this.
10.00 they are having difficulties to start the generator.
The Hotel internet is down and I can’t access the one next door.
I just cry.
During the 2 hours the generator was running, all I did was trying to get Wifi.
Then, to make the thing worst, the Hotel which originally agree on $1500 plus water and electricity, now wants $2250 because they can not meter the electricity nor water I use?!?
We argue for one hour, I tell them I am taking back my diesel and selling it to the higher offer.
Finally we settle for $1600 all together, but I lost trust in them.
I no longer feel safe here, more and more I want to leave, but I also don’t want to loose all I remove from the boat.
18.30 the generator starts, but no internet anywhere.
20.00 finally an internet connection.
Just sending the message I wrote.

Ventilation vent cover on Amel 54

Sv Garulfo

Hi all,

We lost the cover for the engine room ventilation output on the port passageway on our Amel 54. It's a simple vent cover but we haven't got any reference to replace it.

Would it be possible for someone to post any information that may be useful to identify the part and replace it? A name/brand/picture would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Keep safe

Hello,

One of the sheaves of my main sheet traveler car has broken. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Thank you very much,
