I am new to this group and am searching for some info on later model
Amels, 1995 and up.
I am looking for a new cruising/live aboard boat. My sailing experience
is from a Pearson Commander in the early 70's to an Andrews70 that I
just sold.
I am very impressed with the Amels and was wondering if anyone had some
info as to boat speed.
Are these boats capable of 200 miles a day under normal cruising? Are
there any inherent problems offshore with the boats, things that should
be addressed or rreplaced prior to taking off.
The propulsion systems seems to transfer a lot of power through
different angles, does this have it's own set of problems.

Hi Golden Daze,

I have US gas bottles on my Maramu and I fill them regularily from Continental bottles. It's very simple to do, you can buy a fitting in almost any shop. BTW, no problems with refills in Greece and Azores.

Great to hear from you.

In the event I came up solo and enjoyed every minute of it;
Nevis, St Kitts, St Barts and off course then on to here,St Martin.
Only thing is I have to get back down to Amel, Guadeloupe fast
- like by Tuesday, so someone to share the 24 hr watches would
be good. Just had a guy on the phone in response to my crew bar
Card; sadly either his phone or my phone is faulty as I could heare
Him but he couldn't hear me.

Yes, your idea of posting an itenery is a good one. Problemm is
I don't have one yet in terms of a timetable that is. But I
Guess I need to get one down, particularly the Pacific legs.

Delighted with the boat. Never given me a moments concern, and
We really did have some bad weather on the crossing as you will
have heard with two sinkings and many many breakages among the
well dispersed fleet.

What are your plans for this year?

I am home this Fridaynfor several weeks after leaving the boat
in Amel's care. If you are there perhaps we could get together
for lunch?

Thanks for your reply. I have just found out that Jabsco has
been having problems with their higher capacity variable speed pumps
and stopped shipping them to resellers some months ago. They may
resume shipments in the summer, which is too late for me.

and pressure switch on my ASM with one of the new variable speed pumps
from Jabsco that do not require a separate accumulator tank or

This is the optional pump intended to supply plenty of water to the

Jabsco has a new 29 liter per minute (7.5 gallons per minute)

never use the hose outlet. It self-primes to 1.8 meters versus 5.5
meters for the AMFA A88B (and the ASM standard A66B), and can run dry.
It's pressure shut-off is 50 psi, which is significantly higher than
the 29 psi of the AMFA.

Has anyone had any experience with a variable speed pump before in
an Amel or any other vessel? Is the higher cutout pressure of 50 psi
a problem? It seems that 40 psi is quite common on smaller, switched
pumps. Shurflo has a variable speed pump, the Extreme Smart Sensor
5.7 that delivers 21.6 liters per minute with a shut-off pressure of
65 psi. I do not know why variable speed pumps have a higher shut-off
pressure or whether this is a concern in an ASM. Any enlightenment
would be appreciated.

We stored our gasoline jerry cans in the safety locker. This isolated
them from the cabin, environmental exposure, and all electrical systems
(which reduces the explosion hazard). This solution is not perfect,
because the safety locker is not vented overboard. However, all Amel
lockers suffer from this problem except the camping gaz locker which
does have a vent at the bottom.

The alternative solution is to store on board but to sew up covers with
some material like "Sunbrella" which offers some protection from solar
degradation of the plastic.

A proper vented gasoline locker would be a welcome addition to any boat.
But then, so would a proper solution of the four major storage problems
of every long-distance cruiser: (1) gasoline ; (2) trash ; (3) shoes;
and (4) dinghy plus engine.

Hi Alan,

AMEL recommends silicon high temperature grease which they sell at high
cost. I have used a Castrol very heavy grease in the past which was OK
but have found Alvenia (I hope that spelling is right) a pourable low
temperature grease to be better. I think it is made by Shell. It is
not expensive and fills both the upper chamber (accessed through the
rectangular side plate) and the lower chamber (accessed through the round
bottom plate). It can be topped off with a funnel through the top filler
hole. I don't think it is advisable to mix different types of
grease.

Gas Bottles

Hello All,

Now that we are in the USA (No. Carolina) I am having trouble finding
anyone to fill our gas bottles (butane camping gaz). Can anyone steer
me to a company that sells the valve that will fit the camping gaz
bottle on the bottle end and have the US fitting on the other for
filling. When in the islands everywhere we filled had these fittings
(wish I had bought one then)but am having no luck here in No.
Carolina. I prefer to keep the camping gaz bottles as we will be
heading to the Med next.

belts and are not sold as matched pairs. I have about 1800 hours on this set
of belts.

thought is that the belts should be of the best quality and bought in
matched pairs and then tightened to specification.
We are in Western Australia having fun with a couple of old friends who have
just come back from navigating Leopard in the Hobart Race averaging over 20
knots in the race and also on the return trip to Sydney !!!

When we have to store a fuel tank of any kind in
the
aft locker we put in a heavy plastic the bag and
wire
tie it. That keeps the oders from the rest of the
boat.

We used C-map for eletronic charts in the Med.
they
worked very well.. We also made good use of the
Imray
Almanac for the Med. it cost a bit but has all the
ports.

The I-Com 802 with the Pactor III is about as good
as
it get for HF/SSB.

We found that we got good reception on the SSB in
the
Med at most times of the day.

Hello David,

Send an email to Connections (connections "at" islands.vi) and ask
them what is involved...you may have to fill out a UP Postal Service
(USPS) form and fax them back to Connections for them to act as your
agent...I am not sure if there is a requirement like this for UPS or
FedEx, however keep in mind UPS and/or FedEx is 4 to 5 times more than
USPS.

Let me know if you have any problems because I have/had an account
with Connections and possibly you could ship the item to me at
Connections and allow you to pick it up for me. They charge $5.00 USD
per package for their service.

Angle Drill Kit which has to be bought in the USA as you cant get
them in the
UK.? Sending it to the UK and then taking it back to the BVI's is
going to
be a real PITA not even, thinking about the tax issues getting it
into the UK
and then the BVI's. Also we need to pay a visit to St John at
Easter as some
boat guests dont have a US visa and we want to go to the USVI's for
sure St
Thomas and also probably over to St Croix so the easy way for them
to get
legally into the USVI's is the ferry from West End to Cruz Bay.
