Recommendations on life raft
jamescromie@...
Hello everyone -
Though this is not Amel specific, I would like to ask the group for recommendations regarding what you all would consider the best life raft for off-shore sailing. This would be for an Amel SM2000, and ideally a 6 or 8 person life raft. Perhaps there is one that fits best on the boat, and perhaps you could share any good or bad experience with the ones that you have had. I appreciate any feedback... -James (hopefully a new Amel SM owner in the very near future)

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. We did go with an 8mm line wrapped around the foil spaced about 6" between wraps and everything has been quiet. Saves some wear on the Furlers and masts and happy cruisers that will be wintering aboard around Kokomo. Respectfully; Mohammad and Aty

Ken, Glad to hear you arrived at the same conclusion. We must have been talking to these vendors at the same time. I've opted not to get the soft-start as I don't think I have one now and it works fine. I'm told the FX-2 can be configured with a delayed start, replacing the timer module in the existing system. I look forward to hearing how it works out for you, but I'm going to place my order today on faith that it will work :) There's a two-week lead time and winter is fast approaching up here. Alexandre, Thank you for the photos and diagrams! I was very sorry to hear of the loss of your boat, and I'm very glad you're still active in this community. Your posts have helped me invaluably as a new owner. Ryan SM 233 Iteration Boston, MA, USA

Sorry about your problem… I can not reply your question, but here is a link when I swap the air conditioning http://nikimat.com/air_conditioning_climma_marine_compact_9_eh.html Some parts might be of interest for you such as Part 3 and 4 I would also look at Part 12, 22, 23, 24, etc. As they are similar, I took different pictures and illustrated better some parts than some other. It will also familiarize you with what to expect, how it looks, etc. Hope that help. Sincerely, Alexandre --------------------------------------------

Date: Tuesday, September 26, 2017, 4:55 PM Hi all,One of the mechanical Climma air conditioning control panels on my boat is not fully functional, and apparently these panels are no longer made. After lengthy back and forth with Veco/Climma, Coastal Climate Control, and Micro Air (all of which have been a pleasure to work with thus far), it seems the best path forward for me is to replace the entire "brain" of the AC unit with the FX-2 from Micro Air and the associated EasyTouch control panel. This is definitely overkill, but not significantly more difficult or expensive than any of the other options, and nets a bunch of new features (like dehumidify mode, day/time scheduling, and WiFi remote control). I'm going to replace the controls on all 3 units so they're all consistent and I can take full advantage of the new features. I especially think it will be valuable for heating over the cold Boston winter. Before I pull the trigger, has anyone else done something like this? Any tips or tricks? Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] replacing Climma controls

Hello Ryan, I have the same problem with two of my Climma conditioners. The problem with the unit in the living room was a $15 relay (repair to be completed soon), but the problem with the aft cabin required a replacement of the entire switch. After doing the same research, I bought the FX-2 W/Softstart with metal enclosure.. ASY360-XL6. I also got the Brass Sensor SUB-056-X07, Display Cable SUB-031-X10, EasyTouch Cont Disp 8 P WIFI ASY-389-X02-WIFI Firmware Version N10. All at a cost of $US824 . I decided for now to change the Climma brains in the aft cabin because 1) the controls are in the bathroom, and you have to get out of bed to change the settings, and 2) because that is the place where we use aircon the most. I will try to install the unit in the next week, so ( a big SO) if successful I'll update with some photos and wiring instructions to complete the task. Looks like it should be easy if you have the correct wiring diagrams. I asked for some help for the guys at Micro Air, and not much back. Sent them the Climma wiring diagram, and thought they would send me a diagram showing where each wire should go... If anyone has completed the installation of the FX2 with easy start/Easy Touch with WiFi, please let me know.. Thanks, Ken Powers SV Aquarius SM@K 262 Currently in Trinidad on the hard at PowerBoats

I had the same failure and rebuilt my own at 1/10 the cost of a factory rebuild. It was surprisingly easy. Take piccies while dismantling and do the reverse when rebuilding…. Cheers, Jean-Pierre Germain Eleuthera, SM007

Re: Puerto Del Ray - Puerto Rico - Hurricane Irma/Maria
Gary,
I am so sorry to hear about the damage done to Liahona by hurricane Maria. Thank you for sharing the information in your message about your extensive preparations, and what subsequently happened. We have all learned from this experience. You did your best, and because of the good job you did, Liahona has survived to sail another day. Well done! Let us know how we can help with the repairs/parts, etc. Derick Gates (in Masschusetts) SM2K#400 Brava On the hard in a steel cradle in Bailey's boatyard, Falmouth Harbour, Antigua

Gary,
I know this is in the realm of very marginally useful information, but the steering cables were completely replaced on Harmonie. Unfortunately it was done by the previous owner so I can't say much more than that. Sorry I don't have more information other than it is possible. Drew, This is possibly a wild idea, but I think that I know what your twang is. If the Raymarine autopilot chain drive clutch makes a momentary slip while under load, it will sound like a twang and the cables will jerk. How many sea miles do you think you have on the clutch? If it is around 20,000, or more, I would replace the 12VDC Raymarine clutch inside the drive unit and see if it solves your problem. Hi Drew, I don't know if it is the same problem you are having, but we had a similar noise, and it turned out to be the Raymarine Rotary drive. Our noise got worse over a couple of years, and finally the drive completely failed, and would not steer the boat. We had it rebuilt by Raymarine USA for a flat rate of $650, and now we have no noise. Our failure ended up being a couple of gears in the drive unit, which eventually completely failed. Good luck figuring it out. Regards, Steve Davis Aloha SM 72 Santa Marta, Columbia Steve Davis S/V Aloha

Steering Cables
drew.gaffney@...
Some owners have described a click or stiffiness. WIth Revelation, whether hand steering or using the chain-drive A/P, rough seas cause a loud twangy pop. It was there 4yr ago, crossing the Indian Ocean, but has gotten worse recently. There is lubrication at the quadrant ends of the cables. There is no looseness where the cables are attached to the R&P. Steering is smooth and there's full range of rudder turn without difficulty. The popping is only when extra force is required for rough seas, big waves., etc. We're hauling out this week for the winter, and wanted to get this resolved before next season. Thank you, Drew Gaffney SY Revelation SM390 Lying Portimao, Portugal

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Main and mizzen furlers
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
I think the best solution is to have a sailmaker make a "noise-stopping sail" out of old sail cloth about 1m H X 1.5m L. Have him sew bolt rope on the 1m side and a grommet at the top and bottom on that side. On the other 1m side cut the side to a point (triangle), and place a grommet at the point. Connect the top grommet to the swivel with small line, connect a "down guy" to the bottom grommet, and connect and "outhaul to the point grommet of the triangle. Raise this "sail" midway. Furl this sail (don't worry about wrapping the downhaul because you will only use it when unfurled and to haul down. Secure the "outhaul" to something that keeps it tight. Voila! Bill,
It was the control box,, thanks for that tip! After replacing the older switch on the winch, it still didn't work so I opened the control box, cleaned the contacts, and coated with Corrosion-X. It's a bit difficult to reassemble (meaning I had to do it twice...), but it works great now. Thanks again, Duane
