Re: Bilge maintenance
jhe1313@...
Hi everyone. I have put into the bilge one waterglass of vinegar per week recently. It has definitely reduced the smell in the engine room and there is no appreciable smell anymore in the cabins. So this seems the way to go although I suspect I have to increase the dosage if the outside temperatures are in the 30s vs the low 20s now. Many thanks again everyone for the great help! Joerg

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Exhaust Hose - how much to replace?

Duane, There is a beautifully made stainless steel exhaust elbow on eBay. It is cast and has the flame from the engine directed in a better direction. I went through 2 before putting in the stainless one. I found pitting at the weld of the factory exhaust flange. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

I'm replacing the exhaust elbow and hose to the waterlift muffler.
The exhaust hose had a soft spot in it that was a few inches below the exhaust elbow and was due to a corroded wire reinforcement. The rest of the hose looked fine. The exhaust elbow was fine as far as I know, but it's a scheduled replacement item. I'm going to have it cleaned up at a radiator shop and inspected to see if it's worth keeping for a spare.
I'm wondering if I should go ahead and replace the rest of the hose downstream of the waterlift muffler. The boat is a 2005 so it's 12 years old, but it looks fine and I don't see or feel any soft spots. It's not surprising that the one bad spot on the exhaust hose was a few inches away from the exhaust elbow, so much heat, and salt water. Not so much heat downstream from the waterlift muffler.
Any thoughts/experiences on that issue?
By the way, I had the injectors (4JH3-HTE) tested with 2,750 hours on the engine and two were leaking and all four were opening too early. I also sent the turbine in and it was fine, no issues, but of course they will replace the maintenance parts and balance it. While I was at it I dismounted the intercooler, engine heat exhcanger and the oil cooler for cleaning and inspection. Surprisingly, the oil cooler had the most gunk in the end caps, but all of the tube bundles were pretty clear.

Re: Keel bolts
I am sailing a SM #374 I had to remove the keel bolt at the bottom of the bilge to install a new ground/bonding cable, the original one being broken. I got pictures/process from Alban - Amel Martinique - and I have to build a tool to get there, but all in all it was not difficult and the bolt was pristine. I can post Amel pictures if they are not already posted.

Many thanks Andy for taking the time to write and providing such great detail. Many thanks also to Bill Fletcher similarly Excellent to hear both your views about the heavy redundancy in the keel to hull join. I'll have a peer in the fwd water tank section if only to get a sense of the keel bolts location etc but I'm taking this item if the 'need to investigate' list! I'll also use the chance to loo at the water tanks. I'm wondering if they need a good clean as the water tastes a little odd. I wonder if Amel considered encapsulating the keel. Perhaps they do on more recent boats but no doubt there are pros and cons Many thanks again for your help and fair winds Miles

Re: Keel bolts
Andy Croney
Hi , we own a 1980 Maramu and had similar concerns before taking her offshore- before we went I asked many boat builders and all the experts re-assured us that the build quality , redundancy in the number of bolts and the stub keel design make it a non-issue for the Maramu. They further placated us in that there has never been any known catastrophic failure ( to date ) of an Amel's keel bolts, to their knowledge.
We made the 14 day non stop passage however the condition of the keel bolts was always in the back of my mind. When we lifted the engine for reconditioning, we had good access to the deep bilge and could view the one bolt head .. like new . Then later when we cleaned the water tank we had access to the other bolts , they also looked in pristine condition. In the saloon in front of the saloon table there is an easily accessible access opening for the tank , where you have the opportunity to easily view the bolts in that section . Lastly, I was advised not to Pull a bolt for testing , as I would do more damage then good and as there did not appear to be any issues with any of them to leave well alone . We are happy and sleep easy. Trust the above is helpful. Andy SV Paladin Maramu #75

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Leaking sea water pump
Hi Warren,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I'm pretty sure that's a Jabsco pump with a lip seal, but's it's many years since I've rebuilt a 4-108. You should be able to see the pump number on the face plate (may need to wire brush it to read the imprinted number). Readily available from many sources like TAD etc. Easy and inexpensive DIY rebuild vs. $350-ish for a new pump. Craig ---In amelyachtowners@..., <trailz@...> wrote : Thanks Craig. I appreciate the advice. The engine is the original Perkins 4.108. I know the impeller is the Johnson 09-1027B-10. Would you know then from that limited info it would be a lip seal or a face seal? Cheers, Warren

Warren, Certainly not a super urgent matter that your sea water pump is leaking. Leaking behind the openings in the impeller casing is common sign of the lip seals (or face seals, if that's what your pump has) being worn out (you didn't tell us what kind of engine/pump you have). It's an easy and inexpensive DIY fix that you may want to put on your future PM schedule. Do rinse off the dripping sea water with fresh before it encrusts other stuff. If this has just started you can certainly run many more hours, monitoring the drips. Odd though that it only drips after engine shut down - I should think you'd see it dripping while the engine is running. Good luck with it, Craig Briggs, SN#68 Sangaris, in New Bern, NC for a bit.
Wow. Good stuff. We own a 1980 Sharki #15. And love it! Have a problem now with the sea water pump dripping water from the openings behind the impeller casing. Does anyone know if this ia an urgent matter to attend to or could I safely motor for a few more hours. It only seems to leak after the engine has been turned off. Cheers, Warren Manon2

Volvo Penta TMD22
Terence Singh
Libby's engine has over 6000 hours of use. The engine burns little or no oil and has served us well over the last 6 years. I have purchased new injector nozzles at a reasonable price of $155.00 for all four. (parts4engines.com) This is an order of magnitude cheaper than buying a complete unit for over $400.00 a piece. I have disassembled the injectors (very simple) and cleaned everything. Time to re-assemble, which from what I see is a simple... My question. On some fuel injectors the pressure at which the injector opens can be set. This is performed by how much the body nut is tightened. Does anyone know if this is the case for the TMD22 injectors? I do not see an adjustment nut (as seen on other units on youtube) Aprreciate any help. Terry SV Libby Amel Super Maramu 1997 #196 Maple Bay, BC

Hi I own a 1984 MARAMU 179 I have spent some time finding a fresh water leaking keelboat. I found it and sealed and repainted the nut and bolt. In my armature opinion Amel is built with a lot of redundancy in the keel bolts just by shear number. Unless you see some cracking or movement I wouldn't worry about them. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Some advice with SAV@amel.fr
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Cameron, Yes, but I doubt that they will have any parts for a Sharki because the last Sharki was built 28 years ago. That said, if you follow these instructions you will accurately receive parts much faster because it will eliminate “back and forth” emails of questions and answers. The primary contact for ordering parts from Amel is SAV@.... In an emergency you can phone SAV at +33 (0) 546 55 00 75. 1. The email for parts must be clear and concise. Do not use phrases like, “I think I want to order.” 2. Use an opening phrase like: “Request for Quote and Availability for the following parts.” 3. List the parts with the best clear and concise description 4. If possible, or if you cannot correctly describe the part, include a photograph of the part(s) 5. Include your year model and hull#. Example: (2003 - Super Maramu 2000 – Hull #387) 6. Include your complete physical shipping address and phone number (no post office boxes, or postal general delivery because it will be shipped FedEx or similar) 7. Do not specify a shipper. Amel will choose the shipper. 8. When you confirm the Request For Parts (RFQ), include complete credit card information. Some advice with SAV@amel.fr
Cameron Burness
All,
Can I please ask for some advice regarding e-mails to SAV@... I have written to them regarding potential spares for our Amel Sharki. I sent the e-mail about 8 days ago. From your experience what is the typical response time from SAV. Also I wrote the e-mail in English, I have assumed that is OK. Is my assumption correct? Thanks Cameron

Hello Amel fans
My wife and i are planning to head off across oceans with our young kids next year. We recently purchased a maramu from 1985. Not a SM. she's amazing but I feel I have lots to learn! I have been pondering the condition of the keel bolts and whether or not to bother with this line of enquiry before we head off. I believe they are accessible within the water tanks under the table. I'd be really interested to hear other people's experience with inspection / access and condition of these once inspected. Many thanks in advance and fair winds Miles SeaLove #162
