I own the Maramu #219 built 1987 . On my boat, the breaker of 100A on the port side cabinet of the front cabine, feed Lofran and furling genoa.    The bow thruster is fed directly from the main switch via two heavy solenoids located on the left side of the bow thruster motor.   At the moment I am in Venezuela but next week I will be in Cartagena for a Packaging Symposium so I will take the opportunity to go on board to say hello to my loved  boat and verify what I wrote to you. Also if I am quite sure, at 78 it is better 
to verify (when possible).

Hi Steven,

 

I can NOT be much help to you as I am in the final stages of wrapping up buying an AMEL 54 without having the slightest experience with AMEL’s .

However from my research etc. just know it is a great & safe boat for cruising.

 

If everything goes according plan I will have in November a private 3 week charter in USVI on an AMEL 54 (LA ROCHELLE) – she survived the hurricanes but now is stuck in the channel due to silt from mountains, ocean as well as sunken boats making it impossible to leave.

Wayne WITT (her owner) is waiting for high tide November 5 2017 to get her out of the passage way – if that fails then my 3 week training charter is cancelled.

 

My only alternative then is Bill ROUSE who has been retained by the current owner to fly to NOUMEA NEW CALEDONIA to hand her over which includes 1 week training.

 

In addition, Bill ROUSE is coordinating some experienced AMEL people in the area to join me in the beginning.

 

Maybe we run into each other – let me know how it goes.

Ian,

   Many thanks for that bit of information.  My Maramu has a 100 amp breaker for the bow thruster and the Genoa furler.  Does the Santorin also have a breaker and if so can you tell me the amperage rating?   If not, do you know the wattage rating of the motor?   My current thruster is fantastic and I am in no rush to change anything, but if there is a simple and proven option to increase the power such as a motor changeout, I would like to make that upgrade in the future.

   I finally got to see a Santorin up close this season, two actually.  Very nice boats, congratulations.  I also appreciate the fact that my Maramu is not as complex as the SM and for the wife and I 46’ is a nice size that we can easily handle.  Both are wonderful boats I think but fewer moving parts to break means I get to spend more time outside of the bilge and the engine room.  (grin)

You will need to remove the corroded section of the mast. I suggest having a replacement mast step fabricated out of G-10 or similar material that could be engineered to compensate for the lost length of material. G-10, aside from being incompressible is not not prone to corrosion so it's an excellent material to use for mast steps. Good luck with the project.

Thank you for all that you do for us Amel owners. Being one of the newest members of the Amel family, our decision to buy our 1993 SM this past August, was in large part to your story and adventures, and to the family we observed on this forum prior even to joining. Being fellow Texans there was something about the two of you and BeBe, and to be honest learning of you selling her was a day of mixed emotions. The brighter side of that event was that my wife and I decided to stop simply admiring Amel's from a distance and window shopping to making a visit to It's Good in Virginia and making an offer on Memorial Day of this year.

Since our closing at the end of August we have spent time making the boat ours, fixing minor things, labeling things and getting to know the boat. That said, every time we have made it up to visit there was a tropical storm looming near by, pushing high winds and sea toward where we were tied up at the Marina. That was also a blessing in disguise, because it made my wife feel very comfortable and safe.

Soon we will be bringing the boat down to Charleston, SC for the winter, and we will be reaching out to you hoping to get on your calendar and becoming graduates of the Amel School!

Thank you so much, maybe we can drive down to Galveston for lunch with the two of you, we are up in the Lake Conroe area, so not too far at all.

   Thanks for doing the testing and providing the results.  I knew that the SM bow thruster was more powerful than the earlier Amel bow thrusters but the upgrade in power is far more than I realized.    From your measurements,  if my math is correct, 420 x 24.1 = 10,122 watts/ 750 = almost 13.5 HP electric as compared to the unit on my boat having around 1.6 HP.  In the case of your voltage measurement, can I assume that the 24.1 volts being measured at the battery terminals rather than the thruster motor terminals?  

   I have never seen a 500 AMP or larger DC breaker so perhaps the lack of availability is this is the reason Amel did not install that form of protection?  Clearly the system has worked well for a lot of boats over a long period of time, but the fuses you mentioned do seem like a good idea in case a short ever developed.

   With the SM motor rated for 6.3 KW and actually being hit with 10KW+ I can now understand the reason that it is important on the SM to limit the burst time to 30 seconds to control motor heating.   With the thruster on my Maramu, a run of 2 minutes results in very very minor heating  (Maybe a 10C rise at most)  but then a thruster is generally only needed for short bursts so I think that the path Amel took to push the motor harder for a short duration was a good choice.  I am wondering if it might be possible for me to increase the power on my thruster by changing to to a different motor?  A doubling in power would be nice to have for higher winds,  perhaps someone else has already looked into this?      The lower unit of the thruster shares many of the same parts with the SM based on the bow thruster items I have ordered so far from Maude and I think even turns the same size prop as some of the SM's.  

   Would you know  (or anyone else reading this)  if the Santorin uses 12 or 24V on it’s bow thruster?

The SM does not have any factory installed protection for the bow thruster circuit.  On my boat the fuses on the battery terminals have a total rated load of 500 Amps, which is reasonable based on the ampacity of the wire used, and has never blown while in use.

And... since I am on the boat, rather than calculating, or looking up, or guessing...  I figured a bit of measurement is in order.  With fully charged batteries (and charger off) using the Magnetronic Amp meter to measure the current draw, and my Smartguage to simultaneously display voltage,  here is what I find:

The bow thruster draws 420 Amps at 24.1 volts.  That's where it stabilized after about 5 seconds.  That's with the boat tied tightly in a slip, so any movement of the hull would (slightly) reduce the load on the prop.

It figures...  almost exactly splitting the difference between what Amel has in the manual, and what the motor nameplate says.  If it matters, this motor was just professionally overhauled last year with new brushes, windings, etc.

Bill,

I bought  2 18 inch pieces of astroturf at home depot. It comes off a large 12 foot long roll.

When I am having the boat hauled it keeps the dirt off the deck and is useful for washing down the chain without scratching up the deck.

How do you lay out 100 meters of anchor chain on deck for rinsing and drying without beating the deck all to hell?  I haven't ever figured out a way to do that.

 

When I had a local fiberglass guy look at my anchor lockers to give a quote for the repair, the FIRST thing he wanted to do was add overboard drain holes to the lockers--which Super Maramus do not have.

 

I explained that on an Amel, if there is significant amounts of water coming into those lockers, something is wrong. Fix the problem (stop the water leaking in) rather than trying to fix the symptom (draining the water).  In a properly maintained bow locker on a Super Maramu, more water will come IN from an external drain than from any other source.

 

That doesn't mean the locker will be bone dry. Putting salty wet sails and lines in there will create a swamp-like environment, that's a different problem.  Keeping stuff as unsalty and as dry as possible is always a good thing--and much more challenging on a cruising boat than on a boat with a home port.

Stabilizing bar for Passarell

There is a bar that was on my Passarell that connected to the boat that prevented the passarell from swinging from port to starboard.

Would someone send me a photo of it mounted and its lengths. Mine has gone to the never land.
