Re: Diaphragm Bilge Pump failure.

John Clark

Hi Dan,
The technician at Amel in Le Marin (the fellow that used to work with Jean Collin, has been there a while) talked me into buying a spare pump last year.  The new pump looks nearly identical to the old one, same manufacturer.  I have not used it yet.

We are currently cruising full time and the original pump gets a fair bit of run time.  It runs for about 15 -30 seconds to drain the gray water sump.   I'm not sure which Amel supplied pump you have, but the one that came with my SM (#37) has been good, except for the suction flapper valve becoming misaligned...which I finally fixed with a modification....don't tell Bill R.

Anyway the pump that came with my hull seems to be reliable, you might want to see if this version would fit with your layout.

Oh and Bill K is right, centrifugal pumps are sensitive to crud in the water.  I would not rely on one as the primary water mover.

I talked with Paul today, I don't know if it the same program you referenced.  He indicated that if he were able to order 5 units or more he would receive substantial savings from Bamar that he would pass along.  Could be they are being more restrictive as time passes and want greater numbers to reduce their unit costs???  Greater numbers could be beneficial to everyone.  BTW I have no financial interest other than to reduce (selfishly) my overall cost.  Hope this works to everyone's benefit.

Hi Porter,  just to add to the statistics,  our dive compressor is in the aft part of the large portside cockpit bench locker.  It is 220v and wired to the "220v Cales" breaker.  Same breaker as for 220 outlets in Engine Room.

Hello Mark & Debbie and welcome to the Amel Family.

Bamar put out a letter in February 2017 that they would replace Amel Bamar furlers with their new furlers at a reduced cost, if purchased by 12/31/2017. I made several attempts at contacting them. They would acknowledge receipt of my e-mails but never received an actual response.

It is possible that the same offer could be pursued. We would be interested, if they do provide the original offer. I have a copy of their original offer.

The second reason for the post is that we are planning to take advantage of the Bamar Amel upgrade program.  Paul at Bamar USA informed me that if enough people are interested in taking advantage of this program there would be significant cost savings of the furling gear.  If you have any interest please email Paul at the following address:  “paul at bamarUSA dot com”

Don,

The problem with submersible centrifugal pumps like the Rule is they are the type of pump least tolerant of solids. They are best to pump only clean water.  Lots of things get into our sumps (which are really gray water sumps, not bilges) that have the potential to cause grief with centrifugal pumps.

You might have control over some of these things, by watching what you put down the galley sink for example, but some of the worst is hair from the shower drains that wraps around the shaft above the impeller, eventually stopping the pump from turning.

Having an electric pump constantly immersed in water is also a potential source for very serious stray current corrosion--if there is a fault in the insulation or wiring.

If you can't source an exact replacement, a Dometic/Sealand T-series discharge pump is a good alternative. Tough, long lasting, and will pump almost anything that can flow through the pipe.

Lavac also sells a 24 volt electric diaphragm pump for their vacuum toilets that might be a good choice, but I have no personnel experience with those.

A bilge/sump pump update from BeBe.

About 2 weeks after launch in December the installed Marina bilge pump fails due to cracked plastic pump drive gear. (At this time the plastic piece that joins between handle and diaphram on the manual whale also broke).  I replaced the Marina electric with the back-up (rebuild of the same model)  and bought a new Whale manual (and ordered replacement parts for the broken whale).  The replacement Marina pump failed about 3 weeks later (same cracked plastic gear).  In the mean time I sent a request to SAV Amel with a picture of the broken gear. They replied that they no longer support the pump?  Then I arrived in le Marin and talked to Alban here at Amel.  He had a new pump on the shelf and a used one (the used one also had a broken plastic gear).  He said he had replacement gears on order from Amel (as they have to replace them several times a year) but no estimated delivery date.

With 4 guests arriving this week, I went over to Caribe Marine and purchased a 24v Rule 1100 lph pump off the shelf (56 euro), some short hose, a 90 degree elbow, and a piece to connect the hoses where the missing marina pump had been.  And 5 ft of wire to connect to the existing connectors.

I was pleasantly surprised with the speed that it empties the sump (comparable), and you can barely hear it.

So now i am watching this thread to decide the long term solutuon.  A) fix marina pumps if I can get replacement gears? B) pick a suitable reliable alternative, C) buy another case of Rule pumps for the cost of a new Marina pump and see how long they last...

Other thoughts?

Maybe relevant....we replaced the AMFA pump with a Johnson VIKING 32.

I wonder if it has something to do with the 1.5 meter vertical feed from the sump ??
In any event the Johnson pump drains the sump noticeably faster than the original, which IMHO is a really bad design.

Ours is also installed in the big cockpit locker, on sliding rails. I would be very wary of installing the compressor inside anywhere. It needs lots of airflow and generates a lot of heat. Since it needs fresh air to compress, make sure you add a snorkel to it if it’s in any smelly space (engine room, head, etc).

The compressor has been one of the most wonderful “surprises” our Super Maramu came with. It’s let us dive in some magical places, clean the hull as needed and save bow thruster props and children’s toys... it wasn’t even on my “list” when looking for SeaBean!

Porter,

I think the receptacle that you see in the aft lazarette on your 54 is 24VDC receptacle to accommodate a plug from a dinghy inflation pump.

Amel mounted the Bauer dive compressor for a SM and the 54 in the cockpit lazarette, which as you know is valuable space.

If I were you, I would remove that clothes dryer in the forward head and mount the Bauer dive compressor there. The Amel installed 220VAC dryer amperage
should be close to the amperage of the Bauer Junior. The 2hp Junior draws about 12 amps at 230VAC. That should be close to the amperage of your dryer.
You will want to research rubber dampening mounts, and might consider having a wood panel enclosure made.

Wolfgang Weber

Hello Porter,
I have my Bauer compressor in the middle  of the lazarette, fixed with 4 lines at 4 points. I have to wind it up with the halyard and electric winch on the deck for filling up the tanks. So the compressor has a good ventilation to cool and the airinlet is protected from CO/CO2. The compressor is in the lazarett a deeper place of the boat and I can use the cockpit for other things.I would never remove anything or the dryer installed by Amel.
If you do not use your compressor on sea or daily , I am very satisfied with my solution.

Safe sailing and diving to all Ameliens.

HI,

You did not identify what model boat you have. However, if it is a Super Maramu, the factory mounted it in the port cockpit locker.

Also, looking at the plug on the compressor it seems to be a 220 volt compressor. On my AC panel there is a circuit breaker for the compressor. If I am not mistaken the outlet in the stern locker is a 24 volt outlet , used to inflate your dinghy.

I have only replaced the bearings once at about 4,000 engine hours.

Hi everyone;

FYI, the pricing I received from Brunton direct in England was much better than the one received from the US distributor on the east coast. I ordered a complete rebuild kit plus misc other parts. The shipping was reasonable and quick. Very nice helpful people.

About $36.00 US plus shipping for the H-6 Autoprop plastic cap with fasteners

By way of further information, both King Propulsion in Virginia, USA and AB Marine in Rhode Island, USA are authorized Brunton's distributors. When I called AB Marine I was told the plastic cap was unavailable and the zinc cap was about $40.00 US plus shipping. When I called King Propulsion I was told that they would get me the plastic cap right away and ship it in a few days, and that if I wanted a zinc cap I should just order it from boatzincs"dot"com for under $20.00US because if I they sold it to me they would have to charge me about double that amount.

Mohammad,

That is a great deal.

You will know when the prop needs rebuilding. In my case everything looked great, There was little if any play in the blades but I could not get any speed put of kimberlite.

I finally decided it was the prop, and in fact it was.

If you have trouble removing the prop with the puller and the bolts break. Change to socket  head grade 10 or 12 (black) bolts, it makes all the difference in the world.

Hi Eric;

We purchased their H6 Maintenance Kit which includes the following:

Grease Gun, Grease Gun Hose, Grease Nipple, Peg Spanner, H6 Nut Spanner, H6 Tabscrew Spanner, Small Prop Puller Kit and a Tube of Grease.

I had the grease gun and the prop puller already on boardand probably could have saved a few bucks by purchasing separate items, but got the package any way as backup. The total cost was 248.90 pound sterling. Ours doesn't need a rebuild yet, but you never know when you are going to need it.
