Main furler gearbox
Patrick McAneny
I want to disassemble the furler gearbox and having trouble removing the black housing which houses the winch socket . I have spent an hour or so tapping it , the aluminum gearbox , the winch socket and it won't come apart,I put it in a vice and tried to twist it and yes , I have removed the bolts and have tried cussing as well . If there is any trick to getting these apart I would like to hear it. Thanks, Pat SM #123

Porter, As far as I can see from the pictures we took last year during the membrane replacement, the VShaped o-ring on the membrane is located on the red end of the sleeve (as you have it in the video). Hope that helps, Thomas GARULFO, Amel 54 #122 st Anne, Martinique

Results of Standing Rigging Replacement in Trinidad
pacificcool@...
I previously started a conversation on whether to replace my standing rigging in Trinidad, Martinique, or Seattle. I provided quotes for parts and labor at all three locations. I had some very good comments which helped me to decide on Jason Rommel in Trinidad who quoted $9,665 versus $13,775 from Gaetan in Martinique (who is recommended by Amel), and $23,000 in Seattle. The main difference seems to be labor. See my report. Jason has a very tidy shop in Peake Yachts Marina and is from Sweden. He used South Korean KOS 316 SS metric wire which is as good as it gets in quality wire. The end fittings and turnbuckles were either from Seldon or Peterson, both of whom are quality suppliers. Jason was unable to source the short turnbuckle on my forestay so he had a machine shop build one at no extra charge. The end fittings were in inches. Jason's quote included replacement of the inner forestay wire and fittings which the other quotes did not include. He was able to start two days after I accepted his quote. It took him 10 days due to constant rain and other boats he was working at the same time. I wasn't concerned since I had to remain in Trinidad waiting parts. As far as I can see he did a great job and was a pleasure to work with. He can be reached +1-868-774-8326 or trinidadrigging@.... I had previously sent this message as part of my first conversation but it seems to be lost and I wanted to provide follow-up to the group. I am still not 100% certain I understand at which end the black v brine seal should be. On the first tube we have the High pressure seawater in end, then the bobbin/connect to the other tube end. One the second tube we have the bobbin/connect to the other tube end and the hypertonic discharge end. We ended up putting the v brine seals at the bobbin ends in each tube. Water tasted great. But only made a few liters as was just checking functionality. Are the elements in in correct orientation? Does it matter? Again. Quite appreciated. And we followed your use the high pressure pump to remove the ends advice. Excellent! Porter Amel54-152

I think that you are correct that the worn pump is at least part of what is causing the lower than normal oil pressure. The sudden drop of oil pressure to 0 when you reach 2000 RPM is very strange and I have been pondering a possible cause. It makes me think that somehow the pump gear has sopped stopped turning. Did you notice if any of the gears on your oil pump are pinned to the shaft? I have seen some oil pumps secured with pins but am not sure about the Perkins 4..154, hence this is just an educated guess. If one of these pins were to shear from the engine runaway and lack of lubrication which you said occurred when the engine failed, you might still have enough friction present to drive the pump gear at low engine speeds but it could then begin to slip. Replacement of that pin (if it exists) might solve the problem with the sudden loss of oil pressure. Please let me know if you someday figure out what is the actual cause of this sudden loss of oil pressure. I will post here if I am able to find another pump. Can you tell me from your research if the non-marine version of the 4-154 has the same oil pump as your engine? I have been through a few Amel as I was looking at a good one to buy within my budget. I can highly recommend one owner in La Rachelle who has one of the best I have viewed. It was unfortunately a little to expensive for my budget and I passed but I regret a bit somehow. If you are interested I can put you in touch with him. In any case I suggest that you buy in La Rochelle, there are a few good owners and good boats, you also get the yard pontoon and the Pochon Amel subcontractor to do any work you will require with the same standard as they have done on the original boat. This is also not to mention Olivier Beaute lives there so he can inspect the boat that he probably already know everything about! Regards, Redouan Assar. Stella ex-Zeerob SM359

Hi All, It;s been a while since i last posted, in my previous post we were looking to purchase an Amel SM2K 2001-2005, We were at the time maybe jumping the gun somewhat as we still had a business commitments. We have however spent considerable time and effort to look at numerous Amels throughout the world, and many more who have visited Cape Town ( tks to all the people who we have met and been allowed to spent time on their yachts and all the advice given , you know who you are and we appericate the advice given ). We are now in the final negotiations of selling our business and now have a 12-18 mnth timeline to start our sailing dream and therefore are hoping to purchase something in the next 12 months. I would appericate it if any one has ,/is planning to sell or knows of any SM2K up for sale.? It is important we are able to speak to the owners directly as i believe this gives us a far better understanding of the condition of the yacht and how much care it has been given. P.S we are also in contact with Michel and Joel Regards Steve

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Quick question on desalator membrane replacement
Porter,
Oops. I forgot this part but it look like you already have the ends off.
Disconnect the high pressure hoses and separate the 2 pressure vessels. Be very careful not to damage - twist, or enlarge the holes for the interconnector between the 2 pressure vessels ( at the end opposite the HP hoses). Use water from the pressure water system - a 1/2 hose will clamp over the SS flare fitting. Cover the hole in the end plug with a thumb - turn on the water - once the air is out, the end plugs will come out easily - apply a little resistance to balance the 2 ends so that both ends get started out.
With best regards,
Mark

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Quick question on desalator membrane replacement
Porter,
Here are the instructions from Great-water.com:
1. Remove the nuts on the tube fittings and disconnect the tubing. 2. Un-mount the pressure vessel. 3. Remove the nuts from the end of the Stainless steel rods. 4. Remove the end plugs from the pressure vessel. ** See notes at bottom 5. Remove the old element. The element must always move through the vessel in the direction of flow, from the upstream end (connected to the pump) to the down stream end (connected to the control panel). There is normally an arrow on the vessel to indicate the direction of flow. 6. Prepare to install the new element. Do not unwrap the element until you are ready to install. Keep this clean and handle carefully. 7. It is recommended ( but not always necessary) to change the o-ring seals on the end plug when the element is changed. If changing the O-rings do this now. 8. The membrane element has an upstream end with a black rubber “V” brine seal in a groove. The element must always move through the vessel in the direction of flow, from upstream to down stream. If you look at the shape of the brine seal you will see that it will be damaged if pushed backwards. 9. Install the end plug in the downstream end. Glycerin can be used as a lubricant to help assembly. Do not use any oil based lubricant that may foul the membrane element. 10. Open the element package bag 11. Insert the membrane element into the upstream end so the brine seal also ends up at the upstream end. 12. Carefully install the end plug in the upstream end. 13. Install the Stainless steel rods & tighten the lock nuts. 14. Re-mount the loaded pressure vessel and reconnect the tubing
With best regards,
Mark

Quick question on desalator membrane replacement
Porter McRoberts
If someone who has any experience changing membranes could watch this video and give me any quick advice I would be hugely appreciative
The question surrounds which end of the membrane (ie the O ring end on the membrane) corresponds to regarding the fitting end in the Kevlar sleeve and especially to the tube fitting end. The hydrolic end or the Bobbin end? Very much appreciated!!!! Porter McRoberts Ibis Amel 54-152 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OJEI0Z__bc Excuse the errors. I have a 1995 SM currently located in Trinidad. About a year ago my port side genoa winch began making sounds like it was working hard. When running it was slower than the starboard side winch and draws 150 amps while the starboard side draws 30 amps. It works fine manually. While in South Africa and later here in Trinidad I tried to remove the gearbox under the winch to see if it was all gunked up. Twice in these countries the yard put a hydraulic puller on the gearbox and left it overnight, but could not break it free from the winch above it. Apparently, the gear that sticks up into the Lewmar winch is galvanically corroded and has merged with the winch. I recently decided it might just be the motor that is bad, so I removed it this morning in about 10 minutes (amazing!) and I will have a specialist determine if it is bad or needs overhaul or whatever.
Question: 1. Has anyone else had trouble removing the gearbox from the genoa winch and if so how did you get it off (if you ever did)? 2. Do the symptoms jibe with a motor problem as opposed to a gearbox problem?
Any comments appreciated.
