A fellow Amel owner here in GA loaned me one of his
spare sensor and bingo!  The sensor was the problem and now
I'm looking for replacements.  Maud on Friday said she
would let me know on Monday if they have any in
stock.
These sensors are
unusual because they are "normally closed" (NC)
reed switches, based on the diagram on the sensor.
I've looked a lot of places and have not found an NC
reed switch with a 20W and 0.3A rating.  If it's an NC
switch then it's a 10W switch, or a 0.1A rating.
Frustrating.  Also, most don't have an LED
light.
Any thoughts on
a company to check with?Duane

Hi Miles,

We mounted the reverse osmosis and the high pressure pump in the engine compartment.  We located the feed pump in the port cockpit lazarette, down by the fresh water heater.  We had to locate the feed pump outside the engine compartment because it would overheat.

Wherever you end up locating it, because it draws seawater, I recommend the location has direct drain to the bilge in case of a broken connection.

Our boat came with a "custom made" hatch prop.  A 1"x2"x10" piece of unfinished teak.  Inserted longwise it held the hatch wide open, edgewise just a bit open, and laid flat just a crack.

Even though it was "stored" just laid on the after deck outside the hatch, it somehow survived TWO circumnavigations just fine.  We had it wash overboard after a year. Bummer.

I made 3 different-length props with pvc pipe and rubber table leg ends 5/8" dia.  A second set for the dodger window allows me to crack it open for air when the traveler is moved to port.

I don't remember who now, but another member showed me this several years ago.

No need for a special holder; just tighten the large Allen key situated on… opinion… the port side of the hinge.  Works like a champ.

I could not find the small capacitors with leads attached, also the other two need to fit in the white box. They are round, most of the ones I have seen on the market are oval or are of a different size and do not fit.

JAMES,

Capacitors are generic items and there is no reason to buy them from Climma. Check capacitors ratings. It should be written on the capacitors. Order online in any electronics supply distributer.

Re: Maramu: Location for watermaker

Michael Konz <mkbiz@...>

I installed an Aquabase watermaker in the engine room. The pump went on a
small platform besides the battery compartment and the main unit is wall
mounted at the port side of the engine room as far forward as possible.
So I still have enough place in the engine room to do all the works.

Good luck

Re: Opacmare Passerelle sticking Jamming Nylon sliding support seized AMEL 54

amelfango

Thanks all for your various advice.  I have the unit reassembled.  As my milling machine is in Dublin I used my timber thicknesser, which I have here in France.  I removed about 1.3mm and this gave just enough clearance.  This means that compared to as assembled when new the amount of swelling that has occurred is nearly 4mm.  I removed 1.25mm this I can say with a fair degree of accuracy as it was on a metal working mill.  On reassembly I had to leave out the 1mm shims that were fitted when new.  I now with the thicknesser removed about 1.3mm.  This lot comes to over 3.5mm.  When you look at the dimensions of the slider this represents a very large effect.

The only way I can suggest an explanation for this is as follows.  The swelling is way beyond any figures given for the effects of water on nylon.  The nylon must be expanded in a sort of a way beyond its elastic limit with water take up.  It dries but does not dimensionally recover.  It then takes up water and expands again.  It is probably due to the structure of Nylon which I have seen described as partially crystalline.

As an anecdote I understand that Nylon shirts were killed off by the fact that in taking up perspiration they also absorbed body odours but these would not wash out resulting in clean but still smelly shirts after washing!  These two issues might well be associated.

I will look at getting the four sliders made from an alternative material.  I will with the various advice settle on the one that looks best.  Thanks all again.

Maramu: Location for watermaker

smiles bernard

Hi there
I have recently ordered a schenka watermaker.
It comes in two parts. The pump and the Reverse Osmosis unit.
The pump needs to be <2m from the skin fitting and the RO unit closeish and lowish to the pump.
I was wondering if other had fitted watermakers and if so where.
I’m going to try and keep it out of the engine room as it’s crowded already with batteries /alternators etc. None of which like Water!
So considering either or a combination of low in the port cockpit locker (under a removable false floor perhaps) and or behind the aft heads (between the heads and the port hull side)

Any thoughts and experience most welcome!
