We raised the waterline on Lady Annila. In total 10 cm. We started mid ship with 0 cm and then raised 1 cm/meter going aft. We then re-painted the line in chili red with International 2-components polyurtainian paint.

Agree. Barbuda is all but deserted at present. Daishaies in the NW is the easiest clearing in port approaching Guagaloupe. Used to be all mooring buoys (free) but Irma seems to have removed most of them and it is back to the good old anchor (usually good space on left hand side and good holding). Then a day trip down to the Saintes.
We are currently in Bas du Fort marina until middle of March but not on the boat. It is a good marina (water and electricity free) but if you go, book ahead as space can be tight. It's 4.5 miles from the airport - taxi €23. Have a good trip. Ian Ocean Hobo SN96

Hi Kent, not sure if your question was directed to me but our Caribe is 2850mm over all from the bow to the end of the point on the back of the pontoon. A feature of the Caribe is the fat pontoons which I guess contributes to the dry ride. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

A couple years ago I removed the furler and took it apart. It was a straightforward project. The gears were all in new condition. I had painted it a couple of times over the previous 5 years and each time after a few months it started flaking off. While I had it apart I had it powder coated. How big is your Dink? (Not getting personal.) I used to put my 10.5 ft AB rib on the foredeck. It rode fine there, but was difficult to see ahead without looking around the dodger. I traded that Dink in for a 9.5 ft AB With aluminum hull. It fits on the aft deck and can still move the mizzen traveler from side to side. And it only weighs 100 lb. My old 10.5 was fiberglass and weighed almost 200lb. The 9.5 is plenty big for 4 adults, is still a fairly dry ride, but won't plane with 4 adults. Kent Kristy SM243

While it is true that removing the jib furling motor is a significant project, removing the two piece furling drum is, at least in concept, quite simple.
My boat had the old style, single piece, drum which had fused to the foil and after much effort, I could not figure out how to get it off in one piece without damaging the foil so I ended up cutting it off and ordering a new style two piece unit from Amel, (at 1260 Euros). By the way, even though the new drum is a much better design, don't change unless you HAVE to. They are NOT interchangeable! A fair amount of machining is needed to adapt the old furler and foil to the new drum. After removing all visible fasteners, the two piece furling drum can be removed from the foil simply by splitting the two halves. Nothing else needs to come apart. When you get it all cleaned up, repainted (or powder coated) be sure that you use Tef-gel, or the equivalent, on ALL the fasteners and mating surfaces to reduce (avoid?) corrosion int eh future. Hi Redouan, we have a fiberglass bottom Caribe dinghy powered by a 15 hp Yamaha 2 stroke , quite heavy and we love it. Planes well and is a very dry ride. We lift it on to the aft deck by the mizzen staysail halyard attached to the dinghy's bow using the main sheet electric winch to lift it. Haul it up to clear the side rails and then lower it on to the deck cross ways. We lash it tightly there. Short haul and coastal we have small davits. The outboard we lift with a line around the block at the end of the mizzen boom run to a small turning block and then to the mainsheet electric winch. Easy as. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

This is not an easy job!!! To remove the furling motor, the headstay must be separated under the motor and the motor unit drops down. It requires additional ropes and a pully set up is used to pull the furler up off the motor separating the two pieces. The furling mechanism (grey wheel and foil) stays on the forestay as the motor is dropped down.
My suggestion is to make an appointment with Amel in le Marin, Martinique and have them do the work for you. If you rebuild the motor they can also paint it for you while it is off the boat in their shop. They will make it look new again.

Hello all- I own SM2K #422 (L'ORIENT). My jib furler drum is heavily corroded; to the point where a large separation is emerging between the two halves. The black rubber gasket between them looks shot as well. Anyway, I have never removed this before. It looks straightforward, but as with many things on this boat, there's more than meets the eye. And it only takes a minute to ask......
Anyway, are there any tricks/recommended techniques to taking it off and then successfully putting it back ? Also, I got a bad case of jib furler drum envy when I saw Bebe's pic of his (looks like the earlier one-piece riveted type) but looked like new with its paint job. Has anyone cleaned up and repainted their drum ? What type of paint was used ?

Hello again- good internet here in Iles Des Saintes so I can get my questions out. Our clothes washer works well (for now) but is original to our boat (SM2K #422) from 2004. Looking to replace it. I read the posts regarding size and models that fit. Has anyone purchased a replacement in the SE Carib ? I read that Bebe's Bosch model 4 was purchased in Spain, if I recall. Haven't had much luck googling this issue.

Hi Paul, As in all things on a boat, selection and location of a wind generator involves compromise and as responses to your inquiry reflect, opinions will vary considerably. Here are some thoughts: 1) You need to check amp output of the various generators at various wind speeds and determine what will be the most likely average wind speed you will encounter during your voyage. The D400 turns at very low wind speed but maximum output is lower than others. As you increase maximum output, you reduce output at lower wind speeds. 2) Noise and vibration are a consideration. Check user comments on the noise factor of the various units. You don't want to be that vessel in the anchorage that every tries to get far away from because your generator is making so much noise. Most generators produce some vibration (apparently not the Superwind according to Danny). Sometimes the vibration can be dampened, other times it's not bad enough to keep you awake at night. Some of this can be mitigated by where/how it's mounted. 3) Top of the mast, middle of the mast or stern arch? Keep in mind that the generator output is not same as the amount of charge that reaches your batteries. The further the generator is from your batteries, the lower the charge is that reaches them. As has been mentioned, maintenance can be an issue if mounted at the top of the mast. How to deploy the ballooner can be an issue if mounted 1/2 way up. Vibration can be an issue on the stern arch. 4) Cost. As Danny eluded to, the Superwind is top of the line, so it had better do everything well. If cost is no object, that might be the way to go but if you have a budget, perhaps you can live with a less expensive option and mitigate any of it's shortcomings. We installed an AirBreeze with aftermarket blades (which significantly reduced the noise and vibration) at mid-mizzen mast. We could not hear or feel the generator in the cockpit. In the aft berth, we could hear a vibration hum but it was not unpleasant and its intensity would alert us to increasing wind speed at night. Each time we'd leave the boat for the off-season, I'd remove the blades, eliminating any concern for excessive wind -much easier to do than at the top of the mast. We'd activate the generator brake whenever we'd raise the ballooner and turn it back on when the sail was deployed. We circled the earth with this set up for 7 years and have no buyers remorse. I’ll have a look at that option My engine bay is flanked with batteries One side is service and starter The other has a big battery for windlass and furler Plus I’ve 3 alternators perhaps we all have. So not that much space for cat swinging But in many ways the engine bay would work well. Perhaps I could make a removable platform I’m not close to the boat at the mo but still curious about the option of between the aft toilet and the hull. Perhaps just for the RO unit I’ll send a few photos once I’ve settled on a good spot but very helpful to hear others experience so many thanks to those who responded Fair winds M

I think Barbuda is to far east and I dont think that you can check in there, have to check in at Antigua. You might also look at Dominica, Portsmouth at Prince Rupert Bay. But it takes a few hours to check in. The PAYS guys can help you with that, as well as quickly set you up with tours that might interest you. If you are there on a Sunday evening I heard that they are having the cruisers barbecue again, that is a pretty good time.
We are in MARTINIQUE until next Wednesday or so.

Hi all Cindy and I will be sailing from Puerto Rico to Martinique next week. I am wondering if stopping on the way or going direct is the better choice? I was considering Barbuda or Guadeloupe for stop overs. I still work so we are on a short leash of 2 weeks per trip. Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Thomas, For your information, regarding the genoa furler on SM 387 BeBe, a few years ago, we removed all of the cream color and gray colored paint until the aluminum was bright. We primed with aluminum primer and used 2-part AwlGrip marine paint. We did this without removing. BeBe's gray color emergency furling sheave is not 2 piece, and is NOT riveted to the foil. Of course, the best way to correct the paint chipping is to remove the furler completely, strip the old paint completely, and have it powder-coated.
