Thank you for the background on the Nirvana spars which indeed are what I have on my Maramu. Access to spares to me is a critical part of boat ownership, especially if that ownership turns out to be long term. As I will soon be preparing my boat for some long passages, if you or anyone else familiar with the Nirvana mast furling systems could list some of the typical areas of failure of this system, it would certainly be appreciated so that I can try to obtain or have spares manufactured as indicated. I should add that I have been quite pleased with the amount of support that Amel has given me even though my boat is now 30 + years old. Thanks to your excellent post, I now better understand the reason that Amel has not been able to help me much with spar related inquiries on my non Amel made Nirvana spars. Can you tell me if any of the Maramu’s had the Amel manufactured spars? Thanks, James SV Sueño Maramu #220

Thank you James, that is what I suspected but really wanted confirmation.
From the comments received from yourself and Joel I surmise that the reefing is perfectly reliable but if spares are required then these will require local fabrication as off the shelf spares are not available. What a wonderful source of help and information this group is!

I have read the same information that you have. Based on that information, I was fully expecting to find that the in mast furling system on the 1987 Maramu that I purchased in 2016 to have problems or be completely non-functional. Instead, I am on my second season with Sueño and so far knock on wood, the only issue I have had was a minor amount of oil leakage from the gearbox on the mainmast. I feel sure that the seals must all be tired so I have been applying a quality Lithium grease to the outside of the seal on a regular basis plus adding covers to shed rain while the boat is in storage. The gear boxes all seem to still be full of oil. In addition, I have installed grease fittings and have been pumping in the special white Lithium used in Variprops which I hope will help protect the innards until I can replace the seals. The motors, switches, relays and wiring have all been perfect thus far, even through one gale. The system is very powerful. I have since read that the main should be unloaded before furling but the current system had no trouble reefing the main with 40 knots of wind in it. While the later Amel furling systems may well be better, I will tell you that I am very very happy with my current system which appears to be completely original. Can you reference the article you mention as to what publication, when it was published and who wrote it? Thanks in advance.
When Amel introduced in the mast furling on the Sharki, Maramu and Mango for the 1985 model year, the spars were built by a Swiss firm, NIRVANA. Unfortunately, NIRVANA soon went suddenly out of business and Amel had to really scramble to obtain spars for their production. Remember, at this time, every Amel boat was delivered on a specific date specified in the contract which was another one of the unique features that endeared cruises to the Amel brand agreement. No one else did this and Amel was very proud of an absolutely perfect record of delivering every boat they built on time and for the exact price contained in the purchase agreement. After an incredible effort, Amel designed furling gear of their own design for the masts and had tools made to extrude raw aluminum spars and booms to their exact specifications. These spars were delivered to Amel where the furling systems were installed after the spars were painted by a subcontractor. Rather than buy someone else’s spars, Amel took the path of making their own so they would never be put in a situation where on time delivery of an Amel depended on someone other than themselves.
The problem with the NIRVANA built spars is that NIRVANA went back into business under different ownership but they did not offer support for the furling masts thay had built before. Many parts of these NIRVANA spars must be created by talented people if they fail and can be quite costly.

Early Amel in-mast furling (c1985)
jdbedforduk@...
I recently read an American article relating to the original Maramu that said that the original in-mast furling, introduced around 1985, has been troublesome and was originally manufactured by an external supplier. Later, Amel brought production in-house and that solved the issues. I'm not referring to the Bamar system mounted externally at the rear of the mast. Does the collective mass of experience on here feel this is a true statement and presumably, if true, this also applies to Sharkis of the same period? Many thanks John

Placement of EV-1 sensor for Raymarine EV-400 autopilot
dbv_au@...
Greetings all, We are supplementing/replacing our existing Raymarine 400(G) autopilot to a Raymarine Evolution (EV-400), re-using the linear drive and rudder reference units. Basis: improve reliability and redundancy going forward; eliminate some RF interference that the Furuno IF-NMEA-2K2 NMEA 183<->2000 data converter is introducing. [This converter is used to take wind & nav info off the N2K bus and send it to existing 400G (which can only accept NMEA-183); also takes NMEA-183 heading data from the 400G (fluxgate compas & rate gyro) and puts it onto N2K bus for the chartplotter & radar.] Does anyone already have the EV-400 with the EV-1 Sensor Core (the white dome thingey that looks a little like the starship enterprise)? If so, where did you place the EV-1 sensor unit? Thanks in anticipation, David SV Perigee SM#396 On Anchor, Sint Maarten

Airmar DX900 Multilog Sensor
Duane Siegfri
My Hydra 2000 is going to the repair shop, and in preparation for bad news, I am looking at the cost of replacing the Hydra with NEMA 2000 compliant equipment. There has been some discussion on how to replace the sonic speed, especially with the Airmar CS4500 in the existing thru-hull and the Airmar P79 for depth mounted to the hull. Airmar also makes the DX900, which will report speed, depth and temperature, and also leeway. This all-in-one approach interested me, and it is not much more cost than the two instruments combined above. The DX900 lists at $1,059 compared to a total of $850 for the CS4500 plus the P79. Plus, the DX900 is N2K compliant, while extra gear would be necessary for the the CS4500 and P79. One downside seems to be that the DX900 sensor face should not be painted with antifouling. That seems to be a problem, since you would have to pull the sensor to clean it. It looks like the electrodes actually protrude slightly below the sensor face into the water, which would be an issue for agressive in-the-water-boat-bottom-cleaners. Has anyone had experience with the DX900? Thanks, Duane

Hi Alexandre,
I am interested in the 58 winch if it's still available. How much is it? Are you in St Martin? I should be there soon. I am also interested in some of your other parts for sale. How do I contact you direct? I'm not too familiar with how t use this Amel site, so a cell number or email address is better. My email is bill.shaproski@... and cell s +1-206-375-2787. Rental of a SM2K ?
Dear Amelians, My wife and I are currently looking to buy an Amel Super Maramu 2000; we looked at a couple in France (where we live) but haven’t found the right one yet, and we are now extending the search. We hope to be part of the Amel community soon… In case we cannot conclude before the summer, I was wondering if anyone would rent a Super Maramu 2K for the last two weeks of August in the Med. It would be a great way for us to start discovering the world of Amels… Probably a small chance but just trying!... Many thanks in advance.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: buying a second hand 1992 SM advise To: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com Date: Tuesday, March 13, 2018, 7:54 AM Seckin, After you've had a look at the boat to make sure that you want to proceed in the buying process and get a survey, I would suggest that you contact Olivier Beaute of Atlantic Yacht Survey to conduct a survey for you. http://atlanticyachtsurvey.com/; olivierbeaute at gmail.com; +33 674 028 243 Search his name on this forum and you will see his many contributions as well as the glowing reviews and endorsements. This is what I wrote about Olivier on this forum after I purchased my SM: I have employed Olivier on two separate occasions to survey two different Super Maramu's. The first resulted in walking away from a purchase and the second in a purchase. I am thrilled with both outcomes! Olivier worked for Amel for ~19 years doing the customer handover and first year support of about 75% of the Super Maramu's made from Hull #70-ish right up until the last one Hull #479. If he surveys your Amel, chances are it is not the first time he has been on it! And you don't just get a thorough, detailed inspection, and well written report with pictures with Olivier's survey services. If you attend the survey (and I strongly advise that you do), you will get an education on the boat and it's systems from an outstanding teacher. For my English speaking friends concerned about communication using a French speaking surveyor, you do not need to be at all concerned. Olivier's English is excellent. Hire Olivier and you will not be disappointed regardless of the outcome of the survey. Good luck with your search! Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Clogged anchor wash pipe - Barnacle Buster
Mark & Debbie Mueller
The SDS for Barnacle Buster identifies phosphoric acid as the primary ingredient at 85% at a concentration of 5% - 20%. I think the rationale for not being specific to try and protect trade secrets. A similar product is available at home improvement centers as a phosphoric tile and grout cleaner. Do a little napkin math and adjust the concentration & you could come up with a far less expensive alternate.
If you do this always add acid to water NOT the other way around. An exothermic reaction may occur causing a violent reaction if the solution is mixed improperly.

Mainsail measurements
Patrick McAneny
I am having a new mainsail made and I am going to send my old main to the sailmaker , but I would like to acquire the factory main measurements to confirm that my old sail was produced correctly. I also would like to have the Amel insignia put on it. Does one know where I could find the sail measurements and the size of the Amel insignia ? Thanks, Pat SM Shenanigans

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Clogged anchor wash pipe
Hi Porter,
The reason I made an separate circuit is because the water-maker is connected to the sea-chest. I wanted the ability to isolate the Barnacle Buster from this. I flushed the AC units with fresh water after cleaning with BB and then reconnected to the AC seawater pump and sea-chest. Not sure if I am being over cautious but I didn’t feel like buying new membranes if I made an error.
With best regards,
Mark

An additional idea. I love Barnacle buster. Saved my heat exchanger. I filled the circuit with B.B. and then turned off systems for a few hours. My thought I’d get some litmus paper. Continuous pour into the Seachest and until the ph rises at the circuit exit and then stop.. Mark’s observations are also my own: wow does a lot of junk come out!!!
Mark is obviously more capable and determined than I am with the tubing to complete the circuit. I thinking this might be a cheat.
