Placement of EV-1 sensor for Raymarine EV-400 autopilot

Greetings all, We are supplementing/replacing our existing Raymarine 400(G) autopilot to a Raymarine Evolution (EV-400), re-using the linear drive and rudder reference units. Basis: improve reliability and redundancy going forward; eliminate some RF interference that the Furuno IF-NMEA-2K2 NMEA 183<->2000 data converter is introducing. [This converter is used to take wind & nav info off the N2K bus and send it to existing 400G (which can only accept NMEA-183); also takes NMEA-183 heading data from the 400G (fluxgate compas & rate gyro) and puts it onto N2K bus for the chartplotter & radar.] Does anyone already have the EV-400 with the EV-1 Sensor Core (the white dome thingey that looks a little like the starship enterprise)? Light wind sail
Hello! Any one with experience of the "Cruisers Light Air Sail Solution" CLASS made by Island Planet Sails, Claim to cover wind anges from just below close hauled and to when you can start to use the the twin out pooled genua and balooner. Airmar DX900 Multilog Sensor

My Hydra 2000 is going to the repair shop, and in preparation for bad news, I am looking at the cost of replacing the Hydra with NEMA 2000 compliant equipment. There has been some discussion on how to replace the sonic speed, especially with the Airmar CS4500 in the existing thru-hull and the Airmar P79 for depth mounted to the hull. Airmar also makes the DX900, which will report speed, depth and temperature, and also leeway. This all-in-one approach interested me, and it is not much more cost than the two instruments combined above. The DX900 lists at $1,059 compared to a total of $850 for the CS4500 plus the P79. Plus, the DX900 is N2K compliant, while extra gear would be necessary for the the CS4500 and P79. One downside seems to be that the DX900 sensor face should not be painted with antifouling. That seems to be a problem, since you would have to pull the sensor to clean it. It looks like the electrodes actually protrude slightly below the sensor face into the water, which would be an issue for agressive in-the-water-boat-bottom-cleaners. Has anyone had experience with the DX900? Thanks, Duane

Rental of a SM2K ?
Dear Amelians, My wife and I are currently looking to buy an Amel Super Maramu 2000; we looked at a couple in France (where we live) but haven’t found the right one yet, and we are now extending the search. We hope to be part of the Amel community soon… In case we cannot conclude before the summer, I was wondering if anyone would rent a Super Maramu 2K for the last two weeks of August in the Med. The SDS for Barnacle Buster identifies phosphoric acid as the primary ingredient at 85% at a concentration of 5% - 20%. I think the rationale for not being specific to try and protect trade secrets. A similar product is available at home improvement centers as a phosphoric tile and grout cleaner. Do a little napkin math and adjust the concentration & you could come up with a far less expensive alternate.
If you do this always add acid to water NOT the other way around. An exothermic reaction may occur causing a violent reaction if the solution is mixed improperly.

Mainsail measurements

I am having a new mainsail made and I am going to send my old main to the sailmaker , but I would like to acquire the factory main measurements to confirm that my old sail was produced correctly. Hi Porter,
The reason I made an separate circuit is because the water-maker is connected to the sea-chest. I wanted the ability to isolate the Barnacle Buster from this. I flushed the AC units with fresh water after cleaning with BB and then reconnected to the AC seawater pump and sea-chest. Not sure if I am being over cautious but I didn’t feel like buying new membranes if I made an error.

An additional idea. I love Barnacle buster. Saved my heat exchanger. I filled the circuit with B.B. and then turned off systems for a few hours. My thought I’d get some litmus paper. Continuous pour into the Seachest and until the ph rises at the circuit exit and then stop.. Mark’s observations are also my own: wow does a lot of junk come out!!!
Mark is obviously more capable and determined than I am with the tubing to complete the circuit. I thinking this might be a cheat.

Barnacle Buster (BB) is good (if you can get it). I am not sure of the main ingredient but I assume it is some type of acid. It works well.
I would treat your anchor wash circuit much as I would the AC system. Use a piece of water hose, a bucket and a pump to make a continuous circuit. Put the BB in the bucket and circulate the fluids for a couple of hours. I do this with the AC periodically.
While you are cleaning you anchor wash hose, you may as well do the air conditioning system on the same day since you can use the BB again and again.
Here are a couple of hints to help. I took an old 50’ water hose and cut it to how I needed it. From the bucket have a piece of hose go to the pump intake. From the pump output, connect to whatever system you are trying to clean. You will need a couple of hose connectors and clamps. At the other end of the system you are cleaning attached the return hose. Circulate the BB back to the bucket but be sure to put some sort of straining devise on the bucket end of the hose so you do not re-circulate the debris. A cheesecloth or fine mesh bag will work well. It is amazing how much crap you will find in the strainer. I let the pump run for at least 3 hours.

Hi all,
Today's maintenance monday task was troubleshooting the anchor wash.
It turns out the pipe is clogged. Using the dock mains pressure lets water through but the pump is not beefy enough to do anything useful. Neither is mouth-blowing into the pipe.
Any advice on unclogging it? Mechanical or chemical (Barnacle Buster any good?)..

Hi Eric, I tried the pump independently of the hose and it appeared ok with nice flow and pressure so I think that part is fine. In 18 months, we've only been away from the boat for a 4 month period and we did rinse the raw water system with fresh water as part of the winterisation. Having said that, the previous owner didn't live aboard and I'm not sure he was applying the procedure. Also, in the med we haven't had much use for the anchor wash, so it would have been stagnant. I'll have a play with the endoscope too, One of my favourite tools onboard. I was reading online about preventive solutions and came accross the Merus ring. Anyone with practical knowledge of that device? Thanks Thomas

Yes i did, from the pump end. Interestingly I get quite a flow out from the anchor end, but when I stop, I get about 5 litres back out of the pump end. So whatever is in there is stuck pretty hard. I'll try a bit more pressure.
I'm guessing the rest of the raw water circuit is probably quite clogged too... I got the engine heat exchangers cleaned recently but the fridges circuit and AC circuit will need attention.
