Three antenna cables but only two antennas?
Duane Siegfri
In chasing down all the wiring I've found three antenna cables in the aft head wire access (to the right of the mirror). They are: SSB DSC antenna Fax 30(Furuno Weatherfax) antenna AIS Antenna The thing is, there are only two antennas on the mizzen. There isn't a combiner in the aft head wire access, so are two wires connected to one antenna? The Fax 30 and the SSB were original equipment. I'm pretty sure the AIS (Nauticast B) was owner added. Thoughts appreciated, Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Alternating hot and cold water in showers
Ryan Meador
I don't know if it's stock or not, but my boat has a pressure regulator downstream of both the pump and the accumulator. It's a tiny thing in between where the accumulator is spliced in and the line splits off to flush the desalinator. The effect is near-constant water pressure (it dips for a moment when the pressure drops below the regulator set point, then the pump kicks on almost immediately), and no variable-speed pump required. It works really well. I have a water temperature problem of my own: my shower will be a constant temperature while it is actively spraying, but if you pause for a few seconds, the temperature changes. In the aft head, it gets hotter (as if it were set to full hot). In the forward head, it gets colder (full cold). My best guess is there is some backflow involved, but I haven't figured it out yet. It's not high on my list of priorities... it is just a split second of the different temperature before it goes back to normal. Could what you're seeing be this, Philipp, or is this unrelated? Thanks, Ryan

I'd like to have it, too. This seems like something that would be a great candidate for uploading to the file store on the yahoo site, then everyone can have it at once and forever. Thanks, Ryan

Bill, I don't know what hell a "vector graphic file" is or looks like, but it sounds like it would help in getting one made , so please send it to me.

If it would help, I have a vector graphic file of the Amel Logo that should be way easier for someone to work with than a photo.

With respect to just sealing the hole in a secure fashion with easily available materials. I would probably remove the rest of the damaged shaft and use two pcs. of 3/4” plywood (1” if you can find it or laminate as needed), one pc. inside and one outside with a good sized bolt passing through the center of both pcs. If you have some large washers it will help spread out the load needed to compress a gasket (neoprene wet suit type rubber should work) or you might be able to use caulking. I would prefer the gasket since additional compression could be applied by tightening the bolt if needed. I would put some caulking around the bolt shaft where it passes through the pc. of plywood on the outside of the hull but the wood will swell some and seal this part pretty well if the hole is a snug fit for the bolt. This will of course leave the hull cutout exposed which will cause some drag but at least you could be sure that there would not be any leakage. You should be able to install this temporary seal with the boat still in the water and it could be removed without any major cleanup to reinstall the bow thruster. Best of luck, James SV Sueño Maramu #220

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Alternating hot and cold water in showers
greatketch@...
The alternating hot/cold water problem is very common on many boats. The usual cause is the constantly changing water pressure when you have a on/off pressure switch on the supply pump. The accumulator tank helps, but really all it does is slow down the rate of change by allowing the pump to cycle more slowly. You'll know right away off this is the issue, because the temperature will change "in time" with the pump cycling.
A couple of things you can do that might help: Most of the water heaters on Amels have a "tempering valve" on the outlet to bleed cold water into the hot to control the temperature. If that is acting up, it is possible the temperature of your hot water is not constant, which would cause the problem. If you have a tempering valve, adjust the temperature on it as low as you can. Typically people set these WAY higher than they need to be. If you set it just a bit hotter than you want for a shower (maybe 40-45C/105-110F) you'll find the shower is much better behaved. Don't use the shower with the cold water "full on" and a trickle of hot to adjust the temperature. Set the flow rate just a little lower than "full on" and the temperature will change less as the pressure cycles. The only complete fix I know of is to switch to a pump with a modern variable speed drive that keeps a constant water pressure. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Moraine Cay, Abacos, Bahamas

Congratulations for looking for an Amel! 3300 hours is “nothing” for a properly maintained Diesel engine. Personally I would stick with original equipment, it will be easier to get help from the Amel Forum. Since you are going to Martinique, have you looked at Caraibe Yachts. This is where I purchased my SM2K five years ago. I used Jean Paul Bahuaud jp.bahuaud@caribbean-yachts.com and was very happy with the service. I think now he has Olaf’ Santorin in his inventory, who now purchased an SM2K http://www.caraibe-yachts.com/fr/occasions.php?recherche=constructeur&constructeur=1&longueur=0:0 I am sure this is a very well maintain vessel. Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] New member question To: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, March 18, 2018, 4:54 PM Hello all, I just registered with this group because, after careful consideration of several bluewater yacht brands (we are past Pacific Seacraft owners), and time spent as crew on a Super Maramu, we have (almost) decided to purchase our own Amel. Next week we are headed for Martinique to look at a few and I have a question for the group. We will be looking at 2 Santorins and a SM. My question: One of the Santorins, a 1991, was re-powered in 2011 with a "Midif MD 1760." Looking this up I find it is a 50-hp turbocharged Mitsubishi-built engine, distributed by Midif in France. I could find no reviews or discussion on this engine anywhere online. Does anybody have any experience with or reliable info on this engine? Reliability? Is it suitable for a Santorin? I assume all parts and support would need to come from the distributor in France. I will know more after a week on Martinique, but I am trying to be a well-informed shopper... The other Santorin, a 1999, while "younger", has its original Volvo engine with 3300 hr (and original standing rigging), vs. the "older" Santorin which has the young Midif engine with 812 hr (and new standing rigging and seacocks). Don't want to post too much at once. Thanks for any advice. Regards, Paul Cooper

Subject: Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Do you want a spare Linear Actuator control board? To: amelyachtowners@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, March 18, 2018, 4:27 PM In an odd coincidence, I was working on a making a replacement PCB for the Bowthruster Linear Actuator before Duane made this post. I didn't want to say something about it on the forum until I actually had one completed and tested on my boat though I did reach out to Duane through an intermediary to let him know that I was already in the process of making a replacement. I finally finished the successful testing of the prototype this past weekend. I uploaded some pics of the prototype PCB on the forums here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/amelyachtowners/photos/albums/1697584458 And here is a link to a video of the bowthruster being lowered and raised back up using the the prototype PCB: https://drive.google.com/file/d/107vwBIrFxJI3APtEOF7hsBGKZMM6B8lP/view?usp=drivesdk The PCB design mimics the original one in my SM #440 as much as possible. It has a 10 amp fuse and the traces are all sized larger than the original PCB. I used the original components wherever I could. So far I've made only the one board, but if anyone else is interested, I can readily make more within a few weeks and can offer them for sale at $250 each (plus shipping) with a 3 year warranty. You can contact me at mfmcgovern at gmail.com if you are interested. I hope this helps some of you. My next project is to attempt to make a drop in replacement for my non-functioning chain counter display unit. I expect this one will be a bit more difficult but I will let you know if and when it is done! Regards, Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA
