Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: b&g wind speed indicator [1 Attachment]

Seckin,

Your B&G 213 Mast Head Unit (MHU) is probably original and over 20 years old. Others are correct that the speed sensor needs to be replaced because the tiny bearing is bad. The speed sensor is about 100 Euro.

I think you should consider replacing the entire 213MHU. It will cost you about 1200 Euro. It is also possible that the mount will be corroded...it will cost about 300 Euro. It comes with 25 meters of cable.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fix Propeller

Rudolph,
I have SM 243.  When I was having problems with low rpm with my old 78HP VolvoTMD22 (with both the Amel-supplied AutoProp and spare fixed prop), I called Brunton's (AutoProp) who said mine was sized and pitched for a SM with 100 HP Yanmar. I had the fixed prop checked by a highly recommended propeller shop in Annapolis.  They said the fixed Prop was also over pitched for my boat and engine.  I had the spare fixed Prop repitched to their recommendations, and voila!...3100rpm.

With your new Yanmar, your props shouldn't be overpitched, if anything, maybe slightly underpitched.  I suspect you have a problem with the Yanmar but if everything checks out you might have the fixed Prop checked at a reputable propeller shop.  If you give them your boat's specs, they can tell you if the Prop is right for your boat with the Yanmar 110.

I'd check the exhaust elbow and turbo first.  It is recommended that you run your diesel hard (over 3000rpms for10-15min) every 6-8 hours to help delay problems with soot buildup in the elbow and turbo.

Hello,

I have lost  one wing of the Auto-Prop Propeller, Now I am traveling with the fix-Propeller, Amel had suplied with the boat. I am surprised, that I canot increase the tours/ min  higher than 2400. With the Auto-Prop it has gone up to 3500. I have the Yanmar 110HP Engin. Is this normal or is eventually the Turbo not working anymore ?

Any experience ?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Fix Propeller

You have a number of things ptobably affecting your performance.

That motor is not original and may be cavitating that prop which was designed for less hp and less rpms.

The AutoProp does auto-pitch and may overcome some of the above issue. I believe the standard prop will continue to be a problem.

When did you buy SM 200? And, do you know if the repower included installation of an isolated ground for the engine?

Rudolf,

If your turbo has gone kaput, normally the tell tale signs are black smoke AND limited RPM. You will really notice the black smoke over 2000 rpm.

ENGINE OVERHEATING ISSUE

JOHN HAYES

Good morning all,

My 1991 Santorin has a Perkins Prima 50 hp diesel of about 13000 hours. It runs like a sewing machine, has been serviced with new oil and filter every 100 hours and has a written engine log.

Twice in the last 300 hours the engine has overheated. The problem is that the spline drive bolted on to a drive cam on the top of the engine is wearing away in the shaft of the Jabsco water pump which drives the raw water cooling system.

The result is the spline is being chewed up and ends up rotating in the shaft of the water pump so that the water circulation stops because the water pump shaft is not rotating and the engine overheats.

Bugger! The pump and spline cost $1500 to replace … and I’m now on my third pump and spline.

There is no detectable movement in the drive cam ………..

There is another identical motor in another boat in our marina with the same issue.

Has anyone out there encountered this issue and identified its cause?

Hey Guys

Thanks.

I think the email got chopped off by the site algorithms. Should I assume it's amel.fr or something like that.

Bill,

If you're up this way and we can help you out or just share a toddy let us know.

We're planning on heading to Cape Breton's Bras'Dor Lakes in mid August then back down to Mahone Bay in late August.

You can reach me any time at reswinemar at gmail dot com. (Let me know if that fools the algorithms;-)

Hi Paul,

that's a bit new to throw away. Car position, halyard tension and leach cord are significant adjustments for performance as I am sure you know but if the sail is poorly shaped or of too light a cloth there is a limit as to what you can achieve.Do you have a foam luff. As I said in my previous it is quite possible to get satisfactory performance to windward in stronger winds with a partly furled 155%.but if its a slog of over 24 hours I change to my 90%

My "old" Genoa is less than 2 years so it still has a few miles left. but I agree with you that a poor 150% can give less performance than a good 100%, have experienced that a few times on previous boats . I will continue with my "old" Genoa cruising North towards Nova Scotia this summer, then decide upon action before heading down to the Caribbean this fall.

RUB RAIL REPLACEMENT OLDER MARAMU

Alejandro Paquin

Good day to all,

We are also replacing the old rubrail on Simpatico. We realized that the original rubrail was installed with one inch aluminum fluted nails. Can anyone shed some light on how to install these nails? Is there a gun i could use? Do we need to drill a pilot hole first?.

There are many nails in this installation and the position is very awkward.

Hi Seckin,
Mark is right be gentle with it.  The wind sensor assembly is about $1200USD.  I broke the threads on mine but was able to repair it.  The previoys owner told me to take it done and flush it with alcohol and fresh water periodically.  Not sure what his periodicity was because it froze up a month after I bought the boat.

My Italian isn't good enough to follow along with the spoken part, but just watching will give you a lot of good tips that will keep you from making a mess of the existing instrument as you get the old bearings out!
