drainage of space under pass-through sole
Ryan Meador
Hi all, I was poking around in my bilge last night and noticed something curious. In the aft cabin, that low area of sole just aft of the pass-through has a hole that drains into the bilge just outside the head. This made me wonder where (and if) the pass-through floor drains to. There must be space under there where condensation can collect. Likewise, I see no drain hole for the low area of the saloon sole just forward of the pass-through. Is this all sealed-off space? I also have a vague memory of seeing a SM with a drain in this low area for draining your wet foul weather gear, but I'm not sure if I imagined that. It seems like a good idea. Ours doesn't "whistle" rather it makes a very soft, gentle, happy "sigh". I think I'd find a whistle annoying...

Dessalator Duo 160 - AC Motor for High Pressure Pump
pstas2003 <no_reply@...>
Good day to all,
We are having some problems with our watermaker. At times, the high pressure pump will not start when power is applied to the AC motor. I have had success by manually spinning the pump first and then it has worked or by running it shortly after shutting down the system. I was thinking that it could be the capacitors or even brushes (no sure if this is a brushless motor or not). As far as the capacitors are concerned, I am not sure what the specs are as mine have been painted over. I read on the forum that both are 30 micro farads (I forget the voltage), but have been told by a shop in Martinique that the running capacitor was 45 micro farads. I don’t recall what they said for the starting capacitor but they did say they were different. As always, any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] water squirting from engine vented loop
Ryan Meador
Thank you. I have noted the whistle, but didn't know what caused it. I wonder if the previous owner told me about the water squirting when I bought the boat and I forgot over the winter. There's no way I wouldn't have noticed last year. I still haven't gotten off the dock this spring, and the weather this week looks like next weekend will be the first chance... Hi Dieter,
I have looked into having one machined in plastic, or cast in aluminum, both too expensive. One possibility is home casting in plastic as I have a sample from another boat to work with. I'll let you know. Steve, MACCABEE Sharki #121

Chesapeake Rendezvous
Patrick McAneny
To date ,12 boats have expressed interest in coming to the rendezvous as well as a couple planning on an Amel in the future and Joel. Diane and I have looked at when people are available to attend, and I have a couple of suggestions of possible dates. I would rather have the decision be made by the attendees, so I am going to suggest two dates and would like for attendees to email me back direct asap the date they would prefer, and majority will rule. Later in the summer looks best. Option one : Would be the third week in August , the weekend before Labor Day weekend, Friday 24,25 &26th Option two: Have it quite later, in early Oct. on Monday Oct. 1st , 2nd and 3rd, then for those interested in attending the Annapolis Boat Show, we could have a rally departing Thursday sailing over to Annapolis, the show is from Thursday thru Monday (Oct 4-8) These appear to be the best two options, so would you email me and let me know your preference. Anyone out there that is interested in attending and has not emailed me yet please do, the more the merrier. Thanks, Pat & Diane SM Shenanigans sailw32@...

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] water squirting from engine vented loop [1 Attachment]
Ryan and Kelly,
This is perfectly normal. The sound should make you happy as it means sea-water is flowing through the engine and out the exhaust. The vented loop is mounted with a hollow bolt and no valve. Some systems opt to install a valve but it is just another thing that can go wrong. Simple is best.
As an FYI, this bolt will also whistle. It you are at a calm anchorage and the boat rocks a little, air can be forced back up the exhaust at the water line and every once in a while the hole will whistle. This drove me crazy for a while. It can be stopped by stuffing a rag into the scupper by the vented loop air exit (and putting a note on the engine control panel to remind you of the rag).
With best regards,
Mark

[Attachment(s) from Ryan Meador included below] Hi all,
When I started my engine (a TMD22) this morning, I heard the sound of water running down the cockpit scuppers. The vented loop right under the engine room hatch discharges into the trough at the aft end of the cockpit, and apparently it has decided to start squirting water (photo attached). At idle, it is a squirt every few seconds. At 2000rpm, it's a steady stream. The amount of water coming out the exhaust at the waterline looks normal, and the engine temperature also appears normal. Without disassembly, I don't see any obvious sign of a valve in the vented loop, and the water isn't coming from what I presume is the vent at the top, it's coming through what I thought was the mounting bolt. I seem to recall seeing a thread about this before, but I can't find it searching on the Yahoo group. Even just learning the proper name for this thing would probably help. What should I check out?
Thanks, Ryan and Kelly SM 233 Iteration Boston, MA, USA

I also have a mechanical indicator, but on mine the plastic housing is broken/melted. It is not the first position on my todo list, but I am very interested if somebody knows where to find a replacement. Dieter Fal-lera Sharki #135

Schematic for Dolphin 50 A Battery Charger
amelliahona <no_reply@...>
My original Amel Supplied PN DOL2450AMEL (evidently custom made for Amel) 50 amp battery charger is suddenly inoperative. No tech info on this at the Dolphin web site or in the files or conversations searches of this site. Does anyone have a schematic for this unit? Already verified power from CB to the unit and also that the main fuse is not blown. It may just be time for a new generation of charger but thought I would at least give a repair a try. Cover for mechanical rudder indicator on Steering wheel hub
Steve Leeds
After nursing the old plastic cover for 25 years, the plastic cover on the mechanical rudder indicator on the steering wheel hub on our 1985 Sharki has finally disintegrated. I know most owners with this situation have cut off the nylon indicator and covered up the opening as new autopilot displays show the rudder position. However, we like the convenience of the old set up and ability to check the rudder position when the electronics are turned off. Has any owner of an older boat found a satisfactory solution to this problem? Steve Leeds Yacht MACCABEE Sharki #121

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: water squirting from engine vented loop

Ryan,
In Amel's installation the water coming out of the "bolt thing" IS the anti-syphon vent. There was no additional vent at the top of the loop, that would be redundant. All you need is one hole up near the top of the loop-somewhere-so air can get in when the engine stops. Bill ---In amelyachtowners@..., <ryan.d.meador@...> wrote : Hi Bill, That is good news! Just so I'm certain I understand, the water coming out of this bolt thing is normal, and that is distinct from the vent at the top of the loop? I see no path for water from the top of the loop to get into the scupper. Thanks, Ryan

Re: water squirting from engine vented loop
greatketch@...
Ryan,
Check nothing! That is what it is supposed to do. (Bet you are happy to hear THAT for a change?) The fitting at the top of the water hose loop does have a small hole that drains as a syphon break into the scupper. There is no check valve or other obstruction in the fitting, it is just a hole. You only have to check something if you do NOT hear the water gurgling. That might indicate a plug in the vent, and increase the risk of water draining into the engine.
