Hi James Good to hear from you I know that busy feeling ! We leave the uk on the 17th and have thew house to clear for rental plus everyone but me has a vomiting bug! I'm very glad the pics are helpful :) yes very very little wear on the racks yes the cables are adjusted at the quadrant you can see the adjustment points on the attached pic I actually dont know how these work. I had to slacken off one side to allow for the reassembly so i need to look at is again and readjust things but its a strange set up. The locking/adjustment nuts either side of the tube clamp are held captive by a large washer with tabs on it (just about visible on the pic). So i cant quite figure out how you are supposed to adjust things as the nuts wont turn as they are held in place I'll have another look once we are afloat again Thanks so much for the thoughts on the anode attachments. I will check .... i did not remove the anode of connecting bolt so i'm not sure if it had to be screwed out of if its just pushed through a whole in the rudder metal. I'll see it the yard can thread it if not, put a bigger threaded bar in place and oversize the anode holes She's had all her antifoul and primer stripped which revealed the hull in good shape - nice and dry but no gelcoat - in places you can see the fiber. I think it must have been stripped before. The yard is suggesting 4 or 5 coats of epoxy before the coppercoat. Do you think that sounds about right? Totally agree with Bill and Bill
If you're not sailing downwind, put the poles away....all of them..it's not that difficult and could save you $000's on torn sails, chafed sheets... Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

It really doesn't matter what they say about boat length, it's the capacity of the pump that's important and the Viking 32 has very similar specs to the original pump,. On the plus side, it's a lot less expensive, easier to get spares for ... we had to make a new mount for it which I made out of a nylon cutting board by drilling holes in the appropriate places...oh and the inlet and outlet hoses are bigger than the original, so I swapped the outlet for the manual pump and used an adaptor at the hose end of that to keep the same bore from the sump through the Viking pump to the outlet. We've had it for nearly 2 years now and it's working fine. Cheers alan Elyse SM437

That does seem a good option, I like the hand crank option on it. Do you find that it is big enough for your boat? The specs I saw indicated that is suits boats up to 40ft. Changing the kit on the AMFA is very awkward and I can now see that my PVC cover plate is warped a bit. Best Regards Barry

Rather difficult
You need the Amel special tool so that you can drop the bowthruster drive tube and propellor out of the bottom of the boat, bring it topside and then you can service it...oil, prop shaft seal, foam seal.. BUT it may be that you just need to adjust the cables so that the bowthruster is up compressing the seals when you put the pin in. There is information in the files section on how to do that.. That nylon gear seems to be the weakest part in that pump.

Hi All,
Can anyone advise me how to get and repair the gear sprocket in the AMFA bilge pump on my Amel 54. When the pump stopped working I thought it was needing the service kit, I replaced all the inner parts but then discovered that the gear sprocket had broken. The 24v electric motor is running fine. I find that it depends on the sea conditions and point of sail. On my recent passage to the Azores we only motored about 24 hrs all told. With a smooth sea and apparent wind forward we sailed in the lightest of airs with the sails quiet. At times doing 3 kn boat speed. However one night sailing in the front we had 30-42 kn true wind dead astern. Rough and confused with a cross swell. The front passed and wind dropped to 12-15 kn true, still dead aft. The slatting was horrible, nerve jangling and terrible for the sails. We motored for 8 hours, bare poled down wind in a solid breeze. Once the sea settled down we started sailing again. Saved a lot of wear and tear. No hard and fast rules. Nick s/y Amelia #54

Like Bill R said, and for another reason... If you leave the short poles up you can not trim the genoa in tight enough to sail upwind well. That last 2 or 3 inches will make a HUGE difference in your pointing ability! Seriously, 10 degrees or more. When you are trying to work upwind, details matter. This is one of the details! Greetings all, I have been the owner of SM hull 207 now "la Querida" formerly "Liebling" for about one year now. We've been doing weekend off shore sailing based out of Moss Landing, California. The last month we've been working on downwind sailing using the poles, so I've been leaving the short poles in place. Well today, the jib ripped (tore) on the part of the short pole outboard of the shrouds. We were doing a routine tack, and the sail was backwinded with some pressure against the shrouds and short pole end. Upon releasing the sheet we heard the awful ripping sound. Upon examining the pole end's outside surfaces none were particularly sharp, although the pin was oriented cotter pin outboard. The ends of the cotter pin were recessed behind the pin end. For me, there were no obvious offending snag points, or sharp edges. I'm not sure of the age of the jib (130%) but 6 months ago a local sail shop re-covered the leech and foot and said the rest of the sail was in good condition. So my questions to the group are: 1. Do you leave the short poles up when not doing downwind sailing? 2. If the short poles do stay up, is there some additional protection you can recommend. BTW. We're loving the SM. We've been working on upwind and downwind sailing with no autohelm, and no human inputs, just tuning the sails. She behaves remarkably well.
