Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Finally a real forum member
There are severe constraints on tin supply with very few producers. Given the outrageously high dilution ratio of total boat hull surface to ocean water volume, I would think this is purely an economically driven lobbying effort from some corporate interest that sees an advantage. Like most things regulatory. I happened to witness Kent’s hull last time it was out of the water and it was immaculate!

Hi Arno,
I would not worry too much about your pollution level… the commercial ships never have barnacles or green on their hulls.
What do you think makes their AF so effective? Yet the regulators ban the use of products on recreational yachts…
Go figure.

Re: Finally a real forum member
I’m surprised you can still buy that stuff. It’s increadebly bad for the environment as it messes up the hormone-balance. In Europe it has been bannen for quite some years now. So no Tin-based a/f for us.
Thanks for your response though.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow-Truster overheat
Mohammad Shirloo
Hello
Reudi;
Yes,
the Amel 54 has a thermal cutoff to prevent damage to the thruster as well as
continuous high current draw (Around 550 Amps at 24V) which could lead to fire
on board. We've had the thermal cutoff kick in only a couple of times
and it has reset in a matter of minutes. We have not timed the exact reset
duration.
I'm
not aware of any adjustments in the thermal cutoff. The bow thruster has a
direct connection to the batteries without a breaker. The thermal cutoff is the
only safety items preventing major damage to the thruster and/or
wiring.
Try to
use the thruster in bursts (less than 15 seconds), as much as possible, so it
has time to cool down between usage. We try to over correct a bit when we use
use the BT so as the bow falls off, the BT has more time to
cool.
Respectfully;

Dear Forum On my Amel-54 I discovered that the bow truster stops working after repeatingly use within 10-15 min timeframe. I used the bow truster a bit more than usual when I practiced some manouvers first time; - and on a second occation when I had to manouver in a marina with a lot of windguests of 18+ kn and another chain over my Anker. It stopped working and after a while (maybe 10 min.) it re-started & operated normaly. I know BT Is not made for constant use, - only few seconds at a time. Then wait and re-use another time. Question from a beginner: Does the bow truster has a termic fuse which is activated after some time of usage to save the motor from overheating? Does anyone know exactly how it works and if this can be adjusted because I think the BT on Wasabi switches of quite fast. Any ideas or other information? Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Bow-Truster overheat
Ruedi, The Amel 54 Bow Thruster has an internal thermal switch (sometimes called thermal reset or thermal cutout). 10 - 15 minutes is a lot of use and will probably cause the thermal switch to open. You should limit your use to 5 second bursts with at least 5 seconds between bursts. Sometimes people will overuse a bow thruster by constantly correcting back-and-forth. If this is what you are doing, try to minimize having to correct. The thermal switch in the Amel 54 bow thruster has been known to become defective. I know of one case of this happening and SidePower suggested that the thruster needed to be returned to them for replacement. I am not sure if you or I could do this replacement of the thermal switch because I have never done it. Good luck. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Do you want a spare Linear Actuator control board?
mfmcgovern@...
Kent,
I completely missed this message. Sorry about that! We are in Deale at Herrington Harbor North. I do have a few more PCBs available from the first batch that I had made. If you are still interested, you can email me directly at mfmcgovern at gmail dot com. From what I can tell, the whole linear actuator assembly came from a company called SNT (www.snt.tm.fr/) I was unable to get any response from them via email even when I had my french-speaking daughter translate my email. I am not on the boat and would like to buy some parts for a side solar panel project Could you be so kind to confirm the diameter of a SM200 railing: - Horizontal railing diameter 25mm Is that correct? - Stanchion diameter 22mm is that correct? I am also looking for a supplier (USA or Europe) of fixtures like: -swivel for solar panel around the railings -adjustable leg to support -any fixture that will fit - either railing or stanchion I did some internet search but did not find a comprehensive set. Any help will be greatly appreciated Thank you so much Dominique sv Viva currently in Fiji

Re: Cam lock on main halyard?
Peter de Groot
Thank you Alan,
Yes the leech of the main is already in bad shape. It tends to fold over when furling. The last 2 or 3 feet don’t straighten out until sailing some distance. I’ve had the leech line replaced and I have a new bungee that still needs to be installed. I’m planning to work a Santa Cruz sail loft when it’s time to order a new main. Your comments are appreciated. Btw: my main halyard is full length which prompted the cam lock question Best Peter La Querida sm 207

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Finally a real forum member
Sv Garulfo
Hi Arno, Congratulations and welcome ! We put coppercoat on Garulfo last year. It worked great in the med. In the Caribbean, we were disappointed to get green algae. But no barnacles whatsoever, just soft stuff and, in Martinique, the tiny shrimps that seems to feed on it. However, one advantage of coppercoat is that you can very easily remove whatever has tried to stick to it with a sponge and you get back to where you started. And that for years to come. We've done it a couple of times in the Caribbean before longer passages. If you search the forum, you'll get more instances of positive feedback and analysis of pros and cons and tips for application. One piece I agree on is Bill Rouse's: satisfaction with the product depends on your expectations. Hope that helps, Thomas GARULFO A54-122 Curacao

FW: Curaçao Customs
To close this topic out – We had our boat papers, receipts, clearance docs and bonding letter etc. We went through the Green Line, nothing to declare. We were asked where we came from and how long we planned to stay. We explained we arrived by plane but we leaving by private boat. They did not ask anything more and cleared us. They did not inspect our bags. We had two bags of clothes and 3 big duffle bags of boat parts. My understanding is nothing was due on the parts as our boat was vessel in transit.
Thanks to those who responded!

We are flying into Curaçao with a few parts for the boat. The boat is already there (placed in bond) as we left it on the hard for our trip. Does anyone know the formalities for customs as we are considered a vessel in transit? We will be leaving Curaçao within a few days once the boat is launched. I can’t seem to find any info through regular channels. Has anyone anything to offer?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Finally a real forum member
Congratulations and welcome to the group Arno. I haven’t hauled the boat just to service the prop shaft. My C-drive oil remains clear. I drop the bow thruster after 2 years to check the oil in it and so far it has remained clear and no loss. I rarely dock so the bow thruster gets very little use. I put 4-500 hours a year on the engine. A word of warning...nothing else sticks to tin-based paints. To recoat with another product, the hull has to be completely stripped (in a closed environment in the US). Kent Robertson Kristy SM 243

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Cam lock on main halyard?
Hi Peter,
I have vertical battens in the main and mizzen. As long as the boom is at 90d, furling hasn’t been a problem. Sail shape is significantly better than without them. I don’t know how much that effects boat speed, but it probably helps some. My battens are 20mm wide and 6-7 mm thick. I can imagine that any thicker might be a problem going into the slot. I am going to ask my sail loft about adding luff foam to improve sail shape when partially furled. I don’t know if the battens will interfere with that. Kent Robertson S/V Kristy SM 243

Regarding Micron 77, in many (most?) parts of Europe it is no longer available having been replaced by Micron 350. We had Micron 350 applied (Micron 77 no longer available) in April, 2018 at Manoel Island Yacht Yard, Malta. According to the experts at Manoel International Paint has assured them that performance will be as good or better. When I compared content they looked similar. Micron 350 is about 45% DiCopperOxide and 25% Zinc Oxide. We will let you know how it does.
