Hi Kent, I have replaced the broken spring on two of my handles with bits of rubber from a child’s play ball. It works most of the time, but if someone wants to investigate having some made, I would like to join in. Regards,

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Batteries for Amel 54
greatketch@...
When talking about batteries on boats there are so many variations it is hard to get any kind of agreement on anything. Even terminology can be a bit fuzzy.
When talking about batteries, if someone says "ordinary batteries" I would take that to mean standard flooded lead acid batteries. Not AGM, not GEL, etc. If we are talking about "ordinary" flooded lead acid batteries, they tend to come in two flavors, "starting" and "deep cycle". The difference is real but it is still a qualitative one, and the dividing line between them is not hard and fixed except in the mind of the marketing department. In general, starting batteries are optimized to discharge very high amperages very quickly, and for very short periods of time, and then to be recharged quickly. The lead plates are thinner, closer together, and sometimes more porous. They are designed to discharge a minimum of their capacity before being recharged. Because of the thinner plates, some (but not all!) tend to be more susceptible to damage from vibration and impact than deep cycle batteries. Deep cycle batteries are designed to deliver lower power loads for longer times. The plates are much thicker and denser, and further apart. They tolerate deeper discharges much better. There can also be some chemistry differences between the two, but these are the highlights. The way MOST people use their batteries is to discharge them much deeper than 80%. If I had to guess, I would say most people typically discharge to 60% or 70%. 50% if they work the batteries really hard. Therefore--for most--people the recommendation to use deep cycle rated batteries is a no-brainer. Starting batteries will die in this use pattern much earlier, quickly eliminating any initial cost benefit. But... (there is ALWAYS a "but") If you really discharge your batteries to no lower than 80% (ever) and then quickly recharge them ALL THE WAY back to 100% then "Starting" batteries might, for you, be a cost effective approach. Even if not "best" they will not be a disaster. I am sure you can find people who will give you an absolutely confident answer. They probably know a lot more than I do. Deep cycle batteries might even have a disadvantage on your boat. Once they get to 80% state of charge, their charge acceptance rate begins to fall, and it can take a VERY long time to bring them back to full. Topping of "starting" batteries from 80% to 100% would happen much quicker. Most recommendations for cruising boat batteries assume a much deeper discharge than you expose your batteries to. And there are LOTS of other considerations and alternative, but we can ignore those for now... Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] CLIMMA AC on AMEL 54
Sadly, it seems to be a trend that is progressing with the progression of technology. The older Climma Compact units made prior to about 2006 lasted 10-20 years with usually the only failures in Capacitors. There is a major difference in the electronics of a newer Climma Compact...so much so, that you would not recognize the newer electronics as being a progression of the older. It isn't just Climma, it is all refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems. I expect the life expectancy of those Climma Compacts made after about 2006 to be half of the earlier generation. The same is true with other brands. Best, CW Bill Rouse Admiral, Texas Navy Commander Emeritus Amel School http://www.amelschool.com 720 Winnie St Galveston Island, TX 77550 +1(832) 380-4970

Martin: We installed Webasto brand AC in September 2017 in our SM. Three 10,000 BTU units. We have used them in Florida for a total of five months and in the Bahamas for about one month. They have a good reputation in North America and I am impressed with their performance and reliability so far (bearing in mind, they have only seen six months of service). Let me know if you want any further details. Ian S/V Loca Lola II SM153 Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Hello everybody, I am sick and tired of my CLIMMA AC`s on CHIARA. They are constantly quitting their service. I had repaired them so many times since I bought CHIARA new in 2010: electronics defect, fan defect, heater defect, leaks and leaks and leaks........ Does anybody have experience with a new generation of CLIMMA ACs (if there is any) or even better: with a more reliable brand? Fit? Installation? Reliability? I am ready to get rid of them. I’ve looked some for replacements, too, also without success. I was able to repair one latch with a safety pin cut to fit where the old spring fit.

Would anybody take me on a quick sail on a Maramu?
Thomas Nienkemper
Hello Amel community,
It's been over a year since I started looking into the Amel Maramu as our new home. The knowledge accumulated in this group is phenomenal and really helped me with my decision for this boat.
One important piece is still missing though. I did not have the chance to sail a Maramu yet. So, I was wondering if there is anybody in Europe (I live in Switzerland) who would be willing to take me on board to show me how she sails. I know I could do that during sea trials, but I thought it makes sense to do have the experience before - who knows, maybe I don't like it at all ;).
Also: If there is anybody planning to sell within the next 12 months please get in touch – either here or send me an email: thomas.nienkemper@....
Best, Tom

Hi Wolfgang,

Because I was buying 13 batteries the BatteryMegaStore in the UK gave me the post fittings at no extra charge, 26 in total. The batteries are exactly the same size and I still use the original wood spacers between them. Everything still fits very snugly, no movement. I was fortunate to have a small people mover van for 6 months after I bought the boat in May 2015 and was driving back and forth (Marseille to UK). Carried these batteries over 2 trips. You will have to check with the France store to see if they will deliver at no charge. The UK store would only deliver at no charge to UK address. Best Regards Barry

Hanspeter, I always have a difficult time understanding your posts. I think you are questioning that it takes me about 15 minutes to remove the heat exchanger on my Volvo TMD 22a . If that was your point,( only guessing it was) you are probably right, it probably takes closer to 10 minutes. I only need to loosen three SS clamps and pull the boot off and slide the tube out. I can't speak to how long it takes on a new Yanmar. No need to reply to this reply ,as I won't reply to your next reply, its a slippery slope I've been down before !
