Engine stop

Patrick McAneny

My SM has a TMD22A engine, increasingly my engine has failed to shut
down using the igition switch, recently it has been failing every time.I
have been forced to use the emergency stop on the engine. My question
is, what is activated by the switch on the engine to shut it down?
Thanks,Pat

Watermakers and Furuno radar

John and Anne on Bali Hai <annejohn@...>

Hello Michael,
Having lived on board a boat for twelve years and spent five years in
the South Pacific on a 1986 Oyster 435 before getting a decent boat,
ie an Amel I would suggest that you should get a new Dassalater 160
ltr as it will provide for all your water needs and do so quickly
thus avoiding running the generator for too long.An ample supply of
good water will enable you to give some away to the people who will
befriend you in remote parts of Fiji or in the Tuamotos where they
have to rely on storing rainwater and thus water is much appreciated.
We carried a 20 litre plstic container full of water as a reserve
against the risk of watermaker failure and gave the contents away
when needed.
So far as the radar is concerned I would not mess about but take the
monitor in to a Furuno agent to have it tested and get exchange
circuit boards as necessary.
Good luck on your voyage, we envy you. Incidentally if you should be
in Malta at the end of October you would see the Grand Prix de Malte
on 31 Oct and 1 November. A French classic car enthusiast joins with
the Old Motors Club of Malta and they have the road around Valetta
closed for the event by the government for a "race".The French ship
in a whole lot of amaxing cars, Bugattis. Ford GT40 etc for the event
and it is a unique Classic event.

Best wishes Anne and John SM319

Hi Gary, Having transported my sonic speed box back to the UK ,B & G have now told me that there is nothing wrong with it and that it must be the transducers !They explain that the test that Goodwood Marine in Trini had carried out on the transducers ( following the instructions of B&G in the UK) doesn't prove that the transducers work.( To be fair, the fault we have is that wretched thing " an intermittent fault", and maybe when Goodwood Marine did their tests the damn things were working.A new pair apparently costs about Ł200, about $360 ( and falling, for you guys....). As Pen Azen is on the hard in Trini I have decided to fit new ones when we return in November. Watch this space....

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Sonic Speed

Hi Ian:

Any updates on your sonic speed problem? While in Guadeloupe last week I asked the
Porchoen tech to have a look at my sonic speed system as I have been wondering about
the accuracy of my system and have been making attempts at calibrating it. Here are
some tips that we discussed:
1. It is important to have clean sensors (nothing dangling in front or between the sender
and receiver sensors). I had recently cleaned mine and noted an improvement. While
painting them doesn't seem to harm them, some sort of sea growth intermittently blocking
the transmission path or causing water turbulence in that path may cause errors.
2. He stated that the sensors very seldom fail but when they do it is because of water
intrusion. He confirmed that they can be replaced via their mounting tubes without
grinding fiberglass etc, but that this is most easily done when out of the water.
3. He indicated that if the knob in the computer is set such that it is in the mid range of
the red LED staying on, and that the LED stays illuminated most of the time when
underway, that this will virtually confirm that the sensors are working properly.
4. The calibration number that they put in to the calibration set up on the B&G display for
the Amel Super Maramu is 6.2. That almost always works. I had been working all around
this number in my calibrations but this number seems to be the best.
5. If all else fails you can do a complete reset of the B&G system (supposedly detailed in
the B&G installation manual. The drawback to this is that it resets the boats log.

Just some more thought as well all strive to understand our technology.
.

Roy,

On ours there is a leaver located externally on the port side of the
gearbox. It is normally held in place by a cotterpin. If you remove the
pin and rotate the leaver 180 degrees. You may have to give the furler a
slight twist by hand to allow the gear to disingage. That's about it.

I just over hauled the roller fuller this past winter on my sharki. The

Hi Barry just curious, have you had a look in the water tank, Im sure
there is the same access, in your case under fridge, as there is in
ours, a Santorin under the sink. I had to re attach the float to the
dip stick last year and was suprised with what had collected there
over the years. If its the same sort of tank the internal gelcoat
wall it may help to give it a wipe down.

Slip for Amel in Fr Lauderdale

Dear Joel,

A few questions:

1) Do you know of any slip where I could leave an Amel SM2000 between
January and April or May 09 and how much would it cost?
Captain Urquhart who lived on 1317 SW 17 St and kept my Beneteau in
2001 is no longer around or at least I don't have a working phone
number.

2) I noted that Nike does not have the wood piece closing the bow
thruster area. I thought you mentioned it was something done
recently. How much does it cost to add one?

3) My wife loved the lamp on the dinette area. Is it something that
can be retrofitted and, if so, how much does it cost?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Jose

Hi
We have a Super Maramu built 1998, and we hade the same problem
with
our Volvo Penta, maybe it could be the same on a Yanmar.
We did do as Ann&John SM #319 suggested but it wasn't enough.
Then we
hade the nozzels/injectors changed. And we had no more problems.

I do not know for sure, but on the water maker replace the
membranes...you will probably need to replace the end caps and O rings
also. A good source for membranes is www.airwaterice.com. The best
water maker, in my opinion, is the one you have...if you replace it,
replace it with a Dessalator 160 liter water maker.

Can't help on the radar except that older antenna/radomes do work with
newer head units...if your antenna is working and the problem is with
your head unit, you may be able to upgrade...I would go to Furuno.com
and ask them which head units work with your antenna/radome.

On the fridge, try replacing the control box. It is the most common
problem with the Frigoboat system...even if it is not the problem,
having a spare control box is a good thing. Our SM2 #387 has a
Danfoss #101N0210 control box.

Re: Chain counter

Miles Bidwell <mbidwell@...>

My 10 year old Chain counter stopped working as I was leaving Gibraltar.
The electrician in Martinique found that the front sensor was dead and
replaced it. Three months later, it stopped working again and this time the
electrician in Rhode Island found (for a fee of $400) that the counter was
at fault and could not figure out how to fix it (I have not yet received the
second bill). I bought a new Italian chain counter for about $160 and it
works, although I must find a way to stop it from counting the electrical
impulses from the jib motor. In the US, Defender has several brands for
sale. As long as it works by sending a signal for each rotation of the
gipsy, one can put the new sensor inside the Amel fitting on the windless
and use the same wires, which makes the installation easy. The European
chandleries also sell a variety of counters. The new counter does not look
bad and I would have saved a lot of money and time if I had not tried to fix
the original one after I left France.

Good luck and fair winds,

Just a question what is "nozzels" ; did you changed the complete injector ?
did you try to clean the injectors with a product that can be put in the gasoil ?

Hi
We have a Super Maramu built 1998, and we hade the same problem with
our Volvo Penta, maybe it could be the same on a Yanmar.
We did do as Ann&John SM #319 suggested but it wasn't enough. Then we
hade the nozzels/injectors changed. And we had no more problems.

Eric. we are now in the Med with bush dollars. Not nearly as much fun as 4 years ago. We did have to go and Amel here to haul the boat and replace the prop shaft seals. Seems that our seals and bushing suffered from the coral growth in the Carib. you may want to keep close watch on yours as you we a long time in St Martin and we think that we go the little white buggers either there or in Antigua..
Other then that we are doing well. How are things on your end. Will you be over this way any time soon. We are going to be in Italy for another three weeks then on the Greeek Island and Marmaris Turkey for the winter. If you'd like to come for a visit please do.. best regards Richard and Joan Piller on Challenge

down to Simpsons Bay as the last time we went to
Oliver's we got to plow some corn rows.

Ask you crew person to give me a call if they are

When we have to store a fuel tank of any kind in
the
aft locker we put in a heavy plastic the bag and
wire
tie it. That keeps the oders from the rest of the
boat.

We used C-map for eletronic charts in the Med.
they
worked very well.. We also made good use of the
Imray
Almanac for the Med. it cost a bit but has all
the
ports.

The I-Com 802 with the Pactor III is about as
good
as
it get for HF/SSB.

We found that we got good reception on the SSB in
the
Med at most times of the day.
