Goit Deck Hatch Lens Reseal
greatketch@...
Has anyone else had the need to re-seal the lens into one of the Goit deck hatches? I just had one pop loose. I've reset the lenses of other brands before, bedding them down in silicone, but just wondering if anyone knows of anything "unusual" about the Goit hatches? Thanks! Winter location Greek Ionian
Mohammad Shirloo
Hi everyone;
We are looking at leaving our boat in the Greek Ionian for this winter. We would appreciate all input about possible locations. We will not be wintering on board, so we are mainly looking for a safe, secure and reasonable location. It would be nice to have some services available but it is not critical. Thanks in advance. Therefore I would be concerned with the Volvo D3-110 lack of reliability, I am sure you have read the issues on this forum or the (FB) Amel Owner Group. Because of that, personally, and this is a tough one, I would be tempted with the Steyr and have spare injectors, fuel pump, etc. Therefore I would research if the Steyr also suffers reliability issues… we only hear of the D3 because most 54 were equipped with one, may be the Steyr are as bad… Alexandre --------------------------------------------

As this is not very popular one in marine industry I wonder if were there any issues with this engine? Does it need any extra service or maintanence? Working hours are low as 1900h so does not look bad. I know Steyr as truck but not yacht engine anyway it had well opinion. Ian Shepherd
Hajo, good to meet you on the dock this morning! Welcome to Leros marina. For the benefit of others who might be considering coming here, I have asked around about the Amel knowledge within the mechanics group. I am told that Panayiotis is very knowledgeable. He is primarily an electrician, but he is also capable of dealing with most things Amel, including rigging. He was previously at Agmar Marine. My mechanic is Manolis who is winning the battle against the Vetus coupling! He seems to be very competent and thorough. With your arrival, there are now 7 Amels in the marina and another 54 at anchor outside. Regards Ian Shepherd SM2K 414 Crusader

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Interior wood quality
James Alton
Hi Bill, We have owned a number of classic wooden vessels with lots of exterior varnishwork along with customer boats with even more. Mahogany (especially African and Phillipine) tend to lighten and turn sort of a blonde colour when exposed to UV for a while. We often used a filler stain on the wood under the first coats to help stabilize the colour. I don't think that Amel stained the wood in our boat however which actually makes repairs easier. When the wood colour changes on the exterior trim, you don't notice this too much when all of the finish is exposed and aging at the same rate but if you have a damaged area to repair it will be quite noticeable if stripped bare to the original colour. The repair will slowly begin to blend in with the rest as time passes. We have stripped down a number of areas of varnish on SUENO and restored them. Perhaps the situation in our case might be similar to yours. The interior as a whole looks great (little to no colour change detectable to my eye) except for the openings where the UV has gotten in through ports and hatches and those are the areas being refinished. The good news about wood is that the UV damage tends to be very superficial so careful removal of just the finish by mechanical means such as dry scraping (good scrapers and lots of care) followed by a light sanding with fairly fine paper say 220 and up is enough to restore the original colour of the wood. The areas that we have refinished to date using Epifanes clear varnish have blended in pretty nice so far. It is very important to keep in mind that you are working mostly on thin veeners so be super careful not to gouge and only hand sand around radiused areas to carefully control the rate of wood removal to the minimum. We keep the curtains closed for the most part and also have covers for all of the hatches that are used when the boat is in storage. Varnish lasts almost forever if you can protect it from the UV. Best of luck to you. James Alton SV Sueno Bizerete, Tunisia Sent from Samsung tablet.

We have some fading right around the cabin side deadlights. It would be easy enough to re-veneer if needed... but I am kind of hoping it is I can squeak by without that... Hi Bill,

That’s probably a good idea, do you have pics of the installations and the parts/sources you used? I know there’s been discussion in the past about adding a fuse/breaker/interrupt switch for the bow thruster. Did you do that while you were at it? If not, what was your thought process about it? Thanks

We added breakers to interrupt the power to the motors for the windlass, and jib furler and, more recently, an emergency stop system for the sheet winches for this reason. The previous owners of Harmonie had the same problem happen with a jib sheet winch--relay contacts welded themselves shut and no way to stop it without cutting the power to the whole boat. (On older SM's--like ours--the control box for the port side winch is way up high, inside the cockpit locker.) Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Annapolis, MD, USA

Re: Drawer/cupboard pulls
Hi everyone,
I will have at least 50 of the drawer/cabinet handles from the 3D printer by rendezvous time. The rest will be ready in another week or so. Those who ordered, please send me your mailing address and email address, confirm how many you want, and send me a check for $7.50 per handle plus $10 shipping costs. The 3D printer has also designed, built a prototype, and tried out the latching mechanism (3 pieces for each mechanism) which he says works fine. He waived the design cost and gave us a $100 discount for 17 mechanisms which came out to be $10 each. If you want one of these, please let me know as soon as possible. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Mechanics in Leros, Greece
Ian Shepherd
Hajo, I am in Leros marina right now having my Vetus coupling changed. As others have written up, its been a very difficult job to remove the coupling from the C-drive shaft. Normally I would do mechanical maintenance myself, but this job proved too difficult without better tools and someone to help. The two mechanics Manolis and Petros do seem to be very professional and I have no worries about their abilities. They also have a comprehensive workshop. There are two 54's and two SM's on the same dock as me, so I would guess that the mechanics have some Amel experience. I believe they charge 50 per hour for their work. For hull work, you will not find better than Poseiden Yacht Services in Netsel Marina Marmaris. I used then last summer and another SM did the same this year after a disastrous experience in Gocek. Leros Marina is well protected, the staff friendly and the food at Skippers is excellent. I will ask around about the Amel experience here for you and get back to you.
