The 50 is indeed a lovely boat with many of the cherished AMEL features.
We toured it at the Southampton boat show and given a magical windfall would have been the boat we would have chosen to order.
From my own limited ocean cruising perspective, I have learnt to appreciate the attributes of a ketch. I also like the two bow lockers, the vast cockpit locker and the port side ‘Liferaft’ locker which are absent on the 50. Most importantly my 3 year old grandson is able to run all through my Santorin with handholds within easy grasp everywhere. Guess the SM is the same. The 50 needs some additional heavy weather poles down below for an older guy like me to feel secure.
However, a very nice boat and given the price of buying a new one I am very happy about the stability of the re sale value of my current AMEL.
They have to be competitive to survive and it immediately got Cruising Boat of the Year. So hats off to the AMEL team.

With regard to the "genetics" of the 50:

7 watertight compartments
Retractable bowthruster
Painted Amel furling mast
Watertight engine room accessible from the bridge only
Large aft lazarette
Semi-enclosed cockpit
Power-everything from the cockpit, no need to ever step out
Same electric system as always, "floating"
Same electronics as always, Pochon > Furuno+B&G
Same cable-driven steering

We toured the 50 in Hyères in April and as soon as one steps into the engine room it is the familiar setup as always, down to the same greywater bilge pump we all are familiar with.  Except the space is significantly larger.

LOA is 16.5 meters, by the way; this boat is no smaller, no matter what the "50" branding may say.  Everything is larger and there is much more storage space than in, say, a Super Maramu.  Except for the fresh water.  Oh well, fire up that watermaker!

The 50 is the modern version of what an Amel looks like.

My Santorin 1991 probably has the same units

But it’s not clear what the motors are .... probably a small truck starter motor but they were quite easy to overhaul and replace the brushes and bearings

Getting the bearing off the shaft required professional help from someone who had a hydraulic press as I recall

The gear box they drive is a standard bonfiglioli unit available here (NZ) from the company for about Us$300

It is always a problem to follow a previous owner who either did not document changes and/or did not label wires. I am sure that you will act differently. The best way to label a wire is with a white sleeve over the wire, but that is not always possible. I found some wire-ties with a label tag that helped me.

Just to say that I’ve now managed to trace the problem. 

Luckily one of the cabin lights had new cable with  unusual colours so I managed to follow that to locate the fuse 
Sadly these lights are sharing with other equipment so it’s another job on the to-do list which only even seems to grow !

I did something stupid trying to fix the fridge light which must be wired into the same circuit so the cabin lights are now out.
Lights in the forepeak, both heads and aft cabin are fine fortunately.

I suspect that all the older Maramus have been adapted over the years and have fuses in different places but in case there is some hidden nook I’ve not yet discovered . . . .

I’ve tested all fuses in and around the circuit board area and behind the chart table, hunted in the engine bay, looked under the mast step and poked about all manner of dark corners but still lights are out

The lights must be wired direct to the battery as there is sadly no main switch to follow from.

Any thoughts about hidden areas I should explore would be very welcome !

You were correct!  I rewired the fan and problem solved.  Not a bad idea to have a spare controller but its no longer urgent.

Hi all,

Bill, yes I believe Amel has discontinued both the 55 and 64, looks like Renaissance 3 will be my first and last Amel ketch.

I think they are intent on building modern sloops from now on.😢.

Has the 55 been officially dropped from production?  That would certainly explain why it is not on display at either the Newport nor Annapolis boat shows.

Bill,

   Great!  Sorry for the delayed response, we have been on the move headed South down the Tunisian coast.

   If you have any problems getting the new varnish to blend in or whatever we are glad to share our techniques.  

   I really appreciate your post on the bow thruster wiring upgrades that you did.  I will closely duplicate your efforts on Sueno as soon as I can get to that task.   In the meantime, we always remove the chain from the gypsy to at least reduce one of the concerns with the original setup.

Thanks--exactly what I was looking for.  I have had a lot of practice with a cabinet scraper which will transfer well.

We see very much what you describe with the fading of the wood around the port lights.  We'd like to keep everything covered more, but we live on the boat full time so that is not always possible.

There is a write up of the wiring work I did on the windlass here:  https://fetchinketch.net/boat-projects/windlass-wiring/  I haven't written up the changes I made to the sheet winch wiring yet, but it is on my to-do list :-)

The previous owner of Harmonie protected the bow thruster wiring by putting 125 amp terminal fuses on each of the four 24V battery positive terminals.  When I upgraded the battery bank, the new batteries were just a tiny bit higher, and the terminal fuses no longer fit under the cover. 

I replaced them with a single 500 amp fuse in the main battery wire before the shut down switches.  That would blow before the cables to the windlass or the engine room melted down from a short somewhere.

There is no power supply switch on the thruster, other than the main power switch.  Not a perfect solution, but I'll live with it.
