Hi Anne and John,
I have my Amel Euros 60 miles to the south of San Carlos de la Rapita (Burriana port) near Castellon. I have never heard of freezes in this area. Winterising diesel engines
John and Anne on Bali Hai <annejohn@...>
We have downloaded advice contained in the latest issue of the
R.Y.A.Newsletter. and it is in the files section. We have never removed the impellors during winter storage but if you do not we recommend filling the sea water cooling system with fresh water for this period in order to prevent barnacle growth in the sea water system and especially in the impellor pump body as we think that the baby barnacles are what damages the impellor on start up next season. It is easily done. Turn off the sea water cock under the seawater filter. Take the top off the filter and stand over it with a fresh water hose. Have someone start the engine and keep the filter filled to the top whilst the engine flushes itself. Have someone stop the engine and start the generator to flush that out before stopping the generator and turning off the freshwater. If you are still going to be using the aircon and heads put the top back on the filter and open the sea cock. Obviously if you are not going to use the aircon and heads flush those out whilst the filter is open. If the boat is hauled out there is no reason why this procedure should not be followed on the hard. Best wishes, Anne and John, SM319

Antifouling and winter berthing in Spain
John and Anne on Bali Hai <annejohn@...>
We have used Micron Extra for the past six years and are very happy
with it.It lasts for over two years provided that if the boat is hauled out during that time we succeed in stopping the yard from blasting it with high pressure hoses. We just wipe it down with a soft cloth or sponge keeping it wet with a hose until the slime has all been wiped off. We do use a high pressure hose to clean the hull when it is hauled out to be anti fouled again but we are careful to keep the end of the jet at least three feet or half a metre away from the hull as Amel suspect that high pressure hoses are a major cause of osmosis. If any growth appears during the season I wipe the hull down with a soft sponge using SCUBA kit. I have a long pessure hose to link me with the air bottle which remains on deck and find this system good for cleaning the prop which is so sensitive to any growth. There is a new marina being completed at Sant Carles de la Rapita on the east coast of Spain about 90 miles north east of Mallorca and about half way between Barcelona and Valencia. The developers are MDL Ltd, a big player in the marina markets on the south coast of England. All the pontoons are in place and the office building is also in use. The hard standing area is under construction and a travel hoist will be provided very soon. Berths are for sale or rent and there is a special deal on offer as the marina is not complete yet.Bali Hai is there on a pontoon pending completion of the hard standing and the rate for winter storage for a 15 metre boat is only about 1800 euros for October to end May 2009 including haul out and launch. Power and water are not metered and will remain so. We are told that it does not get cold enough to freeze water during the winter. The location is very sheltered and I would not expect to see a swell in the marina except perhaps in a strong south easterly and probablly not even then. Contact is n.salter@mdlmarinas.co.uk Best wishes, Anne and John, SM319

If you go to the Amel web page you will find the Sharki plans and specs under the "previous units" tab. The plans do not show specific measurements, but there is a proportion reference, in meters, under one of th plans. From this reference you can approximate most measurements. We had 5 years using one application of 2 coats of Interlux Micron 33 with excellent results; maybe it's available outside the USA as tin is the 'active' ingredient and isn't allowed anymore on recreational marine vessels. We applied Micron 66 ten months ago with great results so far. Both are soft, or ablative, anti-fouling bottom paints. Richard SM #5 "Spice"

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Amel Ownership
Serge Tremblay <laetitiaii@...>
Mr Olivier Beauté of the After Sale Service of Amel ( in french Service Après Vente or SAV) has replaced Mr Sello who held this job for more than 3 decades.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I am not certain Mr Beauté has maintained the procedure followed by Mr Sello pursuant to which a written record was maintained for each and every boat produced by the yard. Any repair by the Amel yard or parts ordered from Amel for a specific boat was, at the time, added to the file. When, I investigated 3 or 4 Amel boats listed for purchase in 2003, I was supprised to discover how much the SAV knew about the various units... However, obviously, the SAV does not know of work carried on by owners or other yards...so buyers beware A serious french surveyor retained to advise on the purchase of a Amel, will routinely check with SAV for such record... It was the case with a surveyor of Guadeloupe, Mr Christian Mir. Re: bow thruster electrical failure
Hi Dave,
Had same sounding problem - was just the on-off switch in the control panel. Try putting a wire jumper across the switch terminals and see if the red light goes on. On mine, the rubber boot had cracked with time and allowed water into the switch. Actually, just wiggling it a lot got it working, but I'll now replace it (and the rubber boot).
