Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] open CPN
Hi Kent,
We have found C-Map to be the most reliable in the S Pacific. Navionics is excellent in some places and dreadful in others (eg in Western Fiji reefs are misplaced, not even shown and shown where there are none). We have C-Map in the Furuno Navnet, and Navionics in a B&G Vulcan7 (which was installed primarily for the fwd scan) in the cockpit. C-Map in the Furuno Navnet and OpenCPN with GE2KAP satellite charts and MaxSea TZ on the laptop at the nav station, with a wireless connection to a tablet repeater in the cockpit. We have found the GET2KAP satellite pictures in OpenCPN to be VERY useful when trying to determine the location and dimensions of reefs...that with C-Map is a very good combination in our view....and of course the essential Mk1 eyeball! Did you ever find the Google Earth/OpenCaptain program you were looking for? Does anyone have recommendations for best charting options in the S Pac? I have been using Navionics charts on my new (1year old) B&G Zeus chart plotters for the US and Caribbean, but someone recommended C-Map for the S Pac. What about useful cruising guides for the SPac?

Yes, It should turn easily by hand and turn the motor. I thought he was saying that the propeller was turning, but NOT the vertical shaft or motor. Best, CW Bill Rouse Admiral, Texas Navy Commander Emeritus Amel School www.amelschool.com 720 Winnie St Galveston Island, TX 77550 +1(832) 380-4970

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main sheet boom slider broken [2 Attachments]
We did away with that sliding block and had a solid aluminium weldment made and welded to the boom. Attached the upper main sheet block to it with dyneema...that's been going for 2 years now....AND I disabled the electric winch for the main sheet so we wind it by hand, prevents too much load being placed on the boom.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main outhaul rope
Danny
We bought a 12 mm Vectran line with a cover claimed to be high friction to avoid the slip, still it happens that it slip but very seldom now. If I would buy again I would try 12 mm Dyneema core, the creep and elongation would be very low. A problem with to tight might be wear and tear on the bearings. Re: Diaphragm Bilge Pump failure.
Duane Siegfri
If you replaced AMFA Bilge Pump with a Johnson Viking Power 32, how did you connect the 1.5" hose connections to the 30mm hose on the Amel SM?
It would seem easy enough to replace the 30mm hose with 1.5" diameter, but where the outlet hooks up to the main line going overboard, there is a fitting with a total of three lines coming in and one going out. I wouldn't want to replace that... I checked with the manufacturer, the hose barbs are molded into the pump body and cannot be replaced. So it seems the best thing to do would be to: 1. replace the 30mm hose that goes into the sump with 1.5" diameter hose with a new check valve at the bottom. 2. find a 1.5" diameter to 1.25" diameter hose barb adapter to connect the outlet to the old hose. I have not been successful in finding one of these. If this is what you did can you tell me where to look for one? Thanks for your help, Duane

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Suddenly screaming noise from the bowthruster and not moving the prop anymore
There are 2 pins that must be installed to keep the gear from turning on the propeller axel. I am traveling today. I will try to upload a drawing later today. Alex on Nikimat had exactly this issue when he rebuilt the lower unit. I think the gear is shipped from Amel without the holes for the pins in the gear wheel. More later when I get home. When everything is correct, it should turn by hand fairly easily. What you do not want is the propeller to wobble on the shaft, which would mean the bearings inside are bad. Regards, Steve Davis Aloha SM72 Hawaii

Hi Bill, I was on the boat yesterday and tried tightening to line. While it had been pretty tight before I did manage to get a bit more out of it. It is tighter now than I think would be good for bearings. I will try it next time I go out and see if it still slips. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

I just read this morning your message to Bill regarding the fact you can move the propeller by hand. I don’t remember if it is normal, I’d would want to say no, but could be wrong, I hope other can confirm. Strange the cap did not match the holes… did you rotate it 90 degree to see if it match better? The new one I received matched. In my case, I had the gear re-machined instead of the key. (I am a little disappointed Amel did not corrected that error, as I mentioned it 1.5 year ago). Personally I would wait other people reply (Olivier?) about normal or not about moving the bow thruster propeller by hand. If “not normal”, then could the splines on the shaft or electric motor be worn out? These are the last 2 pictures on http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_spin.html Good luck… sincerely, Alexandre --------------------------------------------

Here are pictures: http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_spin.html You will need from Amel Part 1110 (Mecanism Pied de Propulseur SM) the price varies a lot if you purchase it from Martinique (977 Euro) or La Rochelle (582 Euro) scroll down to 1110 to see the part: http://www.nikimat.com/spare_parts_bow_thruster.html NOTE: Make sure you order with the Tufnol shaft and not the bearing by themselves as the size of that shaft has changed (look at the last picture on: http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_lost_propeller.html ) NOTE 2: when you receive the 1110 - the small open space to receive the key on the small gear will have to be machined a little as it is not thick enough. If you look at the 2nd picture on http://www.nikimat.com/bow_thruster_spin.html You will see where the key goes has not be machine as much as on the old gear. You have a good view on picture 6. Hello Willem !
On Cottonbay I had this problem it was the engine shaft that was broken! I had deposited on the xebsite photos of the rupture of the shaft, it is due to fatigue .... the treshafte is poorly sized or of poor quality .... The whole of this bow thruster is not the best from AMEL! JLuc CottonBay

Mine also turns by hand on the Santorin. Maybe it’s a sign that previously the bearings wear binding quite tightly?

Hi Bill, I bought the lower unit kit from Amel. Besides the end cap did not fit in (holes for the screws were at different distances) the unit is installed again. But I have some feeling of uncertainty. I can move the prop of the bow thruster by hand when it is lowered with power off. Is this normal? I am still on the hard but the yards planning is to put me into the water tomorrow. I don't want to be forced to go out of the water immediately again because the bow thruster is not working correctly. Please advise.
