Salon mod

Hey Bill,

Just saw a sm that had the salon love seat, cabinets and pull out birth replaced with a traditional settee. Am i correct that this was never an option and was a mod done by the owner? I do think it would be more practical than the pull out but it may not be very “Amel” aproved.

Yes I do, although I am not currently an active member, having been boatless for the past few years to my great regret.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] mounting of dual racor filters
Hi Alan I cannot answer your question, so wait for those who are more qualified to provide the answer. However, in the interim let me say that we also swapped out our old single fuel filter system for a dual one, with quick flick over switch change over, plus a substantial automatic fuel polishing system..... and mounted these to that rear engine room wall before sailing into Indonesia where fuel problems are an ongoing problem. I simply used good sized large threaded 316 stainless wood screws, and they easily hold these units without "bottoming out" into any fibre glass or wires/pipes on the rear wall behind the timber under the rubber sound proofing. I am currently land touring in Sth Africa, away from the boat, so cannot remember or measure the screw lengths for you unfortunately. Others here will be able to give dimensions. Tip, do not try to raise the height of that dual filter much higher than the low position at which the original one sat, despite how tempting it may seem to have it at eye level on that nice huge rear wall! We raised ours about 200mm and have had no fuel flow issues at all. day fuel tank
Hi everyone. I am interested in fitting a day fuel tank in a super maramu and wondering if anyone has ever done this before. I would like to set up a fuel polishing system going to the day tank that would gravity feed to the engine. I was hoping to get another 100 liters of fuel as well.
I am looking at mounting it behind the cockpit drain pipes attached to the aft wall of the engine room. Feeding the tank with a fass fuel filter and pump. Really appreciate any advice Michael 251 sm

mounting of dual racor filters
Alan Grayson
Hi All, i am changing from the single racor filter to dual racor 500 series filters. When i removed the single filter it was mounted on a block of wood that had 2 bolts thru it which seem to be mounted thru the bulkhead. 1; i can't find where the bolt heads are. I do remember reading somewhere that the engine bay is double layer by that i mean the bulkhead then a layer of foam then more plywood then more foam which would explain why i can't find the bolt head. Can anyone confirm that? If it is the case then i should be able to screw into that wood to mount the new filter body frame which is considerably bigger with 3" thick mounting blocks which allows me to clear the drain water shutoff valve. Can anyone confirm this? Regards Alan Grayson SV Ora Pai SM 406 Ft Lauderdale

Aft Head Hose
Duane Siegfri
I noticed that the hose that fills the tank has quite a bit of corrosion at the tank connection. Shouldn't this copper tube have a bonding wire? I posted a photo of it. I noticed it while trying to unplug the toilet. It won't empty. I've already established the plug is not in the motor or macerator blade (which I replaced). There was quite a bit of accretion in the elbow with the joker valve but not enough to cause the plug. I reconnected and tested it anyhow after cleaning but no joy. I disconnected the 1" hose from the back of the toilet at the joker valve, and connected a four foot piece of 1" hose and filled it with vinegar. Hopefully an overnight soak will do the job. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Main sheet boom slider broken
Thanks for the heads up Paul. Our slider also showed signs of cracking. See attached photo. As it happened we stopped in at Hampton over night to allow weather to moderate off Hatteras and the shop was only a 20 minute walk from the marina. Replacement piece very nicely done and powder-coated. Andre and Ashley Gilliam we're very nice even giving me a lift back to the boat. They have 5 more boom slides for anyone who is interested at $205. We had one of our ballooner hookers break so I left it with him as a pattern to see if they could fabricate a new one out of aluminum. Will follow up with information as it becomes available. Hi Gary, I have no problem with my mizzen furler. Works perfectly. Just considering prevention rather than cure. Are you saying a water flush would go through and rinse salt out internally? The person (sorry, name escapes me) who just fitted a new gearbox commented it felt heavier than the old one and asked if it was full of grease. Also on my main furler there was a trickle of oil coming out of the input shaft so I replaced the seal. The two gearboxes look much the same. I am a great believer in lubrication and feel uncomfortable I've done nothing with these. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

DANNY:
Do NOT add a grease nipple to the mizzen furling gearbox. The box is designed to run with minimal grease and adding more will accrete salt & dirt accumulations. I undertook a laborious complete overhaul of my gearbox (better termed a gear cannister as it is all cylindrical), and came away impressed with it’s elegant simplicity and lack of need for lube. Also came away with knowledge that my teardown wasn’t needed. Thirough and frequent rinsing with fresh water is the best maintenance. I will write up a complete teardown and re-build article shortly. In the meantime, just start rinsing the shaft area with fresh water, also run fresh water into the gap at the top of the cylinder, it will flush the delrin bearings and drain out the two drain holes on the bottom of the cannister. If your gearbox is frozen it is almost assuredly at the winch handle shaft. The shaft is two pieces and rides within teflon or HDPE sleeves. Binding is due to salt & dirt accretions. Hence the need for copious fresh water rinsing. Again, DO NOT add grease, More soon. Gary S. Silver s/v Liahona AMEL SM 2000 # 335 On the hard, Puerto Del Rey Puerto Rico

Re: Sailing Caribbean to US
Ian Park
Hi Wolfgang,
We met briefly in Port Napoleon 4 or 5 years ago. Cape Verde Islands are worth exploring. If there is any swell in Mindelo your boat is safer and more comfortable in the anchorage. There are no piles on the pontoons and the movement of the pontoons in a swell can be very destructive to your boat. From Mindelo the ferry across to Sao Antao is a good day out if you take a taxi up to the crater at the top and walk down the spectacular ( but very safe) path back down through the rain forest. Also Sao Nicolau is a lovely island, very welcoming people. Don’t know what your destination is, but we crossed to Barbados which is an awkward island to get to from anywhere else. Glad we didn’t miss it out. Have a great trip Ian and Linda Ocean Hobo SN96 (back in UK now).

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Isolation transformer
Alan,
I would think the answer depends on the electronic equipment you are running aboard with this current and the rating of the equipment. I do not think there would be a blanket answer of yes or no to your question. You will need to check the acceptable input voltages of the AC units, battery charges, water heater, etc. and determine if they can run with the higher voltages. Most equipment has a label with the acceptable range on it.
With best regards,
Mark

Hi All, i am just installing a Victron Isolation transformer. My input voltage from the pedestal is 245V and my output voltage from the transformer 259.5Volts 60hz. Is this ok to run thru the boat? It seems a lot high in fact getting 240v from the pedestal surprised me. Regards Alan Grayson SV Ora Pai SM 406 Ft Lauderdale

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Isolation transformer
Stephen Davis
I’m no expert, but I think you are on the edge of where some electronic components may be damaged by long term exposure to that much voltage. For example, my Mastervolt battery charger has a max input voltage of 265V. You seem like you are getting very close to that.
