Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Purchasing House batteries in Martinique
Ric,
Most islands do not recognize YIT. Some require the hiring of an agent to obtain YIT exemptions. This will add to the cost and along with freight will put batteries about 40-50% hirer than USA prices.
In addition, trying to find fresh batteries in the island can prove to be a challenge in itself. Before any battery purchase understand what the manufactures coding is and determin how long they have been on the shelf.
With best regards,
Mark

James, Generally There is no tax on equipment shipped when marked “yacht in Transit”. Batteries are heavy and may face more scrutiny. Check with DHL too, Things may have changed a little since my visits. You can also get fuel tax free before or after you have checked out of the country.. Happy Holidays fellow Amel owners.
I would like to ask the group for advice on obtaining house batteries in Martinique. I am interested in upgrading my batteries to Firefly or some brand of lithium ion, though I doubt that such options would be available in Martinique (perhaps I am wrong? )
Otherwise, I would need to ship them in, though I understand the import tax is significant. What have others done in this situation?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Purchasing House batteries in Martinique
James,
If you are in North Exumas, why not just sail to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. It’ll probably save you at least $2,000 on any set of batteries you purchase throughout the islands. It’s just a 3 day sail. Or, Puerto Rico will have options.
I am not going to comment on the battery types you mentioned. Those would not be my first choices for many reasons.
With best regards,
Mark

Hi James, If you are still in the Bahamas I would suggest stopping in the USVI or St Maarten to get batteries. I think they will be cheaper. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but in Martinique don't you need to have a French customs broker get you a VAT exemption certificate before you can skip the tax? Re: Larger stove?
Force 10 has the burner in the back but they use a heat distribution-plate to spread the heat evenly. It works OK I would say, Noting beats a circulation oven but that seems a imposiblility for boat stoves.
The plate has a special curved shape to lead the heat to the front of the cavity. It also has a thermostat and a top grill / broiler. We have been using it in anger for a few days now and is working as expected. It’s better then the original Eno. The regulation of the burners is much better. The oven is a bit smaller but it does not affect usability for us. Arno SV Luna A54-121

Yeah...I bought a set and I'm thinking the same thing, but maybe using Vectran with a polyester cover and pulled tight it may be OK.... I'm not back on the boat until the end of January, I'll install them then, test them out and report back. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Those are elegant and stainless is great. The only modification I would consider is indexing the screws so that the "ribs" are offset from each other, thus allowing the line to "weave" thru the pulley, like an Anderson winch. Gary S. Silver s/v Liahona

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Toe pulley (headsail)
amelliahona <no_reply@...>
I don't want to step on any toes here, but I can't imagine how the pictured pulley could work. The ribs in the Amel pulley are meant to grip the jib-car positioning line so that it doesn't slide in the pulley. Just like an Anderson winch. You are depending on the "grip" of the rope to prevent the jib car from moving under load from the jib sheet. Just my opinion.
Isn't Amel going to provide these any more? I purchased a set a couple of years ago from them. It also seemed that somewhere back in time on this forum someone posted about having manufactured properly ribbed pulleys from stainless steel. Sincerely, Gary S. Arno,
Where is the oven burner in the Force 10? Maybe all marine stoves have the burner in the back, but it leads to very uneven heat. Thanks, Duane Wanderer, SM#477

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Toe pulley (headsail)
Toe Pulley Seekers, I have received Bernard’s pulleys and they appear very well machined and of what looks to be a superb material (PETP). This instruction sheets also look well done and complete. However the slot/groove for the line is smooth, not ribbed or toothed, and the PETP is slippery. Has anyone installed these and how well do they work? It would seem that line size and composition must be very specific to this slot/groove. Mike Ondra ALETES SM#240 St. Augustine, FL

Hi Paul, The one we got had an oven with a top and bottom gas element. The bottom for oven the top for grill so we have a grill function within the oven Same as our original. We considered a four burner but realised we seldom wanted more than two burners. I really like the amel gimbal set up and it wasnt hard to transfer it. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean pearl

Thanks for that info, Danny. Did you get it with or without the grill? We are concerned the grill reduces the oven volume too much.
