For what it’s worth, this 18 month Amel newbie installed one and been out twice in light winds, dry conditions. So far no slipping. After first installing, I tried to get it to slip manually, but it held and my confidence up a notch. I’ll report back after going through some tougher conditions.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Purchasing House batteries in Martinique

James, You may want to call a customs broker or somehow figure out if batteries are exempt from VAT. We were advised that many electrical components (like solar panels and charge controllers) are exempt from the 8.5% vat. Recently we forwarded a bunch of cargo from the US to MQ and paid roughly 2% in VAT. We could not get an itemized receipt for the tax, so we are unsure whether we paid the lesser 2.1% rate on the whole shipment, OR if we were completely exempt for most of the shipment and paid 8.5% on the non-electrical items. We were also advised that it's not worth the brokerage fees to initiate the PST process (for tax-free import) unless you are bringing in more than roughly 4000 euro in goods. We were also advised that "yacht in transit" is not a guarantee of anything. Shipping from the US will be another issue. You may run into issues trying to air ship lithium ion batteries. Are you planning on hiring someone to install the batteries? If you are getting other work done, you might want to use the PA process for VAT-free labor and parts. Then you can have your contractor import the batteries themselves and then bill you for it. The break-even threshold is 6000 euro for all labor and parts. (It costs 500 euro to do this process, and VAT would be 8.5%. AFAIK Douglas Yacht Service is the only place in Martinique that is authorized to perform the PA process.) Good luck kelly + ryan sm233 Iteration MQ

Mark, Most of the batteries sold in the islands are made in China, because their much cheaper for the locals. However good than in the USA batteries, electronics anchors etc are also from China sold in the USA. I have never found a problem with YIT. They may protest some, but with some urging and the right paperwork (proof of purchase for one ) I always got it.

Ric,
Most islands do not recognize YIT. Some require the hiring of an agent to obtain YIT exemptions. This will add to the cost and along with freight will put batteries about 40-50% hirer than USA prices.
In addition, trying to find fresh batteries in the island can prove to be a challenge in itself. Before any battery purchase understand what the manufactures coding is and determin how long they have been on the shelf.
With best regards,
Mark

Happy Holidays fellow Amel owners.
I would like to ask the group for advice on obtaining house batteries in Martinique. I am interested in upgrading my batteries to Firefly or some brand of lithium ion, though I doubt that such options would be available in Martinique (perhaps I am wrong? )
Otherwise, I would need to ship them in, though I understand the import tax is significant. What have others done in this situation?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Purchasing House batteries in Martinique
Ric Gottschalk <ric@...>
There are some things cheaper in the islands if they are Duty free, like dinghy motors (japanese) in St Maarten. However if you buy something in the USA and ship “yacht in transit” there is no import tax. I have shipped a Nex-Gen 3 kw generator, big solar panels, 60 qt .Engel coolers, etc to places like St. Maarten, Tortola, and to Trinidad and not have to pay import tax. And, of course, carried with me when flying to my boat in the islands enough gear, including a life raft, that they thought I had 3 wives (sorry girls, it’s a metaphor) Basically shipping from the USA to a US flagged yacht . Tell if I missed anything. I would check to see if the batteries are mfg outside the USA and buy direct Ric Bali Hai SN 24 Annapolis

Agree with Mark that prices in the US will be very much lower. I didn't suggest sailing back because, while it will likely be a smooth ride back...turning around to get to MQ or Windward Islands will be a more challenging sail. Or well maybe not. If you have time it might make sense.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Purchasing House batteries in Martinique
James,
If you are in North Exumas, why not just sail to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. It’ll probably save you at least $2,000 on any set of batteries you purchase throughout the islands. It’s just a 3 day sail. Or, Puerto Rico will have options.
I am not going to comment on the battery types you mentioned. Those would not be my first choices for many reasons.

Mark

Hi James, If you are still in the Bahamas I would suggest stopping in the USVI or St Maarten to get batteries. I think they will be cheaper. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but in Martinique don't you need to have a French customs broker get you a VAT exemption certificate before you can skip the tax? Re: Larger stove?
Force 10 has the burner in the back but they use a heat distribution-plate to spread the heat evenly. It works OK I would say, Noting beats a circulation oven but that seems a imposiblility for boat stoves.
The plate has a special curved shape to lead the heat to the front of the cavity. It also has a thermostat and a top grill / broiler. We have been using it in anger for a few days now and is working as expected. It’s better then the original Eno. The regulation of the burners is much better. The oven is a bit smaller but it does not affect usability for us. Arno SV Luna A54-121
