Agree with Mark’s excellent advice. However, some battery load testers may show a poor rating on deep cycle batteries, as they are designed primarily for starter batteries. They may claim to be good for deep cycle, but take that claim with a grain of salt. I would certainly isolate each battery and check individual voltages.

We have been off-line for so long on this last 5700nm crossing from Cape Town  so had not yet got time to research the ABC's. 

We joined Y Insurance this year who have incredibly good rates compared to Panteanius & Velos, and also include "in water" hurricane cover in the ABC's only hence our decision to go there.

Also consider an extended stay in Aruba during hurricane season. Curacao, not so much. You will love the diving and snorkeling in Bonaire, it is really first rate. If you opt to go to Aruba, the Renaissance marina is right downtown in the heart of everything and have reasonable monthly rates. You will need to book way ahead since due to many people’s insurances companies making changes, the ABC’s are becoming a destination for those wanting to stay in the Caribbean.

In Prickly Bay now, then a slow trip up the Windward then Leewards before BVI's & US BVI's etc then across to Bonaire in late May/June for Hurricane season.

 

Would love to participate if the dates work out, and/or say HI to any other Amel owners as we travel the Caribbean this season. If you see us anchored near you feel free to come over for a cold beer. We love Amel talk!

Hi Colin,

 

Interesting about insurance. I have spent the past couple of months shopping for insurance to get us through the Panama canal and across the S. Pacific. I have it narrowed down to Y-Yacht (UK), Novamar (USA) and Top Sail (UK) – We currently have Pantaenius and it is going to be cost prohibitive for us to continue with them. If we decide to stay in the Caribbean, the Pantaenius requirements a virtually impossible to adhere to. Either way we need to change.

 

When you say “Y Insurance” do you mean Y-Yacht?

I have a battery issue too, that I’d like opinions about.

I just bought 8 new series 31 120 AHr deep cycle marine batteries in August (while in Maryland). They were kept fully charged with solar before we headed S in late Dec. After only a month, they are not acting like 120 AHr batteries. They stay charged fully during the day with solar (900watts) but at night they discharge to ~24.7V and the monitor says I’ve only used ~45AHrs. I reset the monitor at dusk when the solar is no longer charging. 24.7V should be about 70% of capacity. That is where I’d like to set my minimum voltage before recharging, in the interest of battery life. But my 480 AHr battery bank shouldn’t get there until I’ve used 30% of capacity, which would be about 160 AHrs.

Am I thinking correctly about that?

I checked the batteries which consistently showed low specific gravity of 1.225 to 1.250 (in the”Fair” range). This didn’t change appreciably after running two equalization cycles with my Victron Skylla charger. It does seem that the batteries are a bit better in that they are now at about 24.8 V just before sunrise.

What do you think is going on here? Should I just keep running equalization cycles until the SG gets back to normal?

Your math is correct and you should be reading slightly higher voltage reads than you are getting.

 

A couple of thoughts:

 

Are you depending solely on the meter in the panel to monitor the batteries? If so, the meter may be out of adjustment of failing. Did you adjust the Peukert exponent when installing the new battery bank?

 

The best way to check the voltage of the bank is to disconnect the bank for a while by turning off the red handle switches, check the voltage with a good quality meter from the main studs in the battery well.

Do you have any load on the batteries when checking the voltage. A load such as a refrigerator running will cause lower voltage reads.

 

Have you load tested each battery to determine if you were sold a faulty or defective battery?

What makes you think you hear the refrigirant flowing? A little hissing sound is not eough to go by. My guess is you need to re-pressurize the system. You may also need to replace the seals inside the connection points and replace the drying filter inside the circuit. Best to call a tech for this as you need some speciality tools for this.
I just had had my crash course in marine refrigiration unfortunatly...

Freezer kaput

We replaced the insulation for the air cooled-under seat- freezer and when we put all back in place, the freezer does not work.


The only thing I disconnected was the DC power, nothing else.  Checked all the connections and nothing amiss.  I can feel the compressor running and refrigerant flowing but no cool.  I tried it on both refrigerator and freezer and nothing.  Prior to this it was working flawlessly.


Any ideas on what to check?

Bamar electric furler / extracting the sheaves - Extractors … Never leave home without one!

Recently, the belt in my Bamar genoa electric fuller ruptured while furling in.  Opening the box, I realized both sheaves had to be replaced. Here comes the hard work of extracting these little guys.  Bamar tells you to lever them out with the help of two screwdrivers.  Good luck!!  After a good three days of hard work, plenty of penetrating WD40, and runs to local hardware stores, I finally succeeded in pulling them out.  Why was it such a hard job?  Can’t explain as the axel on which each each sheave is fitted was perfectly smooth and clean.  No rust.  So, it’s just a faulty design on Bamar’s part.  Just another one.

You do not say which direction you are heading when leaving Grenada or what type of batteries you are seeking.

Throughout most of the islands, batteries are going to be expensive, about 50% or more over USA prices. The bigger challenge is getting the quantity you need and fresh batteries. If you seek specialty batteries, this is going to be harder still. If you seek wet cell, the choices and availability will be greater.

 

You have three choices:

 

1)    Buy from a local store such as Budget Marine or Island Water World and just swallow the price

2)    Freight batteries from the USA using one of many freight shipping options – This will be lower than option 1 but require an agent in Grenada for YIT status and of course will take time.

3)    Sail to another country such as Puerto Rico and buy batteries at Costco or West Marine. You can buy on-line and have them delivered to a store for free in PR (sometimes) – it’s only a 4 day sail from Grenada to get there. Some of the other islands also offer a good battery selection such as Martinique and St. Martin.
