Pantaenius Yacht Insurance - Southern Border of Hurricane Zone
I just heard from my Pantaenius Broker who told me last year Pantaenius was considering reestablishing a southern border for the hurricane zone. He wrote:
"The southern border would be south of 10 degrees. So, that is most of Columbia and Panama. Grenada is above 12 so does not qualify. You can get Grenada but will have to be able to do one of our Stormplans and will have a Large named tropical storm deductible."
He didn't say whether this was official yet or in the works.
We're planning on going down the eastern Caribbean this year, and were planning on Grenada for a haul-out during hurricane season, but now I'm wondering where we could go south of 10 degrees? Cartagena is even north of 10.
Any suggestions on marinas/boatyards south of 10 in Columbia? The closer to Grenada the better obviously. We were planning on going from Grenada to Central America anyway.
In the meantime I've asked for a quote from Y-yachts.

i believe that's correct, Bill, just like Jackline, Gowrie and Pantaenius US, if I'm not mistaken. (Although Pantaneius may be closer to the parent.) My understanding, from Al Golden, who started Jackline (IMIS) is that an entrepreneurial broker, who can develop a strong market, can develop their own "brand" product and enter into an exclusive agreement with a major carrier (underwriter/insurer) to offer a product under the broker's product name. The actual insurer is always disclosed (under a few layers of marketing) in the actual policy that is issued. Probably a good scheme for narrow specialty markets like cruising yachts, where brokers like Al Golden and Barry Sullivan are really more knowledgeable than the parent giant insurers. Now set up Y Yacht Assurances France for post-Brexit operation. The actual insurance and underwriting is through MS Amlin, part of MS and AD (haven't researched them) and Y Yacht Insurance is a trading name of Y at-sign Limited, an English company.

10/1). I goggled y yacht insurance and was directed to Pure. I had received an unsolicitated mailing from Pure not that long ago, and sent the flier into my circular file. Is y yacht some kind of branch of Pure, or am I on the wrong road here? There are a number of brokers near by my home in NY that are brokers listed for Pure. None of them are yacht brokers. Due to my stem fitting issue, and some current electronics upgrades, I put my plan to slide thru the canal and head west off till next year, but the insurance coverage will need to be resolved before that. From Mark's comment, it appears that Pantaneous will be prohibitally expensive. I'm more concerned about liability coverage for all my vessels (5), and I don't care about the bells and whistles, so from your description, a y yacht policy may be a good way for me to go. (UK), Novamar (USA) and Top Sail (UK) – We currently have Pantaenius and it is going to be cost prohibitive for us to continue with them. If we decide to stay in the Caribbean, the Pantaenius requirements a virtually impossible to adhere to. Either way we
need to change.
When you say “Y Insurance” do you mean Y-Yacht?

We joined Y Insurance this year who have incredibly good rates compared to Panteanius & Velos, and also include "in water" hurricane cover in the ABC's only hence our decision to go there.

Island Pearl II just arrived in Caribbean early this morning from Brisbane, Australia via Asia, most Indian Ocean Islands, South Atlantic Islands and Brazil.
In Prickly Bay now, then a slow trip up the Windward then Leewards before BVI's & US BVI's etc then across to Bonaire in late May/June for Hurricane season.
Would love to participate if the dates work out, and/or say HI to any other Amel owners as we travel the Caribbean this season. If you see us anchored near you feel free to come over for a cold beer. We love Amel talk!

I think it is a great idea, our Maramu is based in Venezuela, if we get and idea of the overall plan with dates included, we would seriously consider participating. Also the cost would be an important factor, in my opinion. Thanks for promoting such an activity.
Maybe we can convince other Amel owners here to participate.

I cannot see why this would not work almost as is, or very close to it after comments by others. Anything extra you or others arrange would simply be bonus on top.
Although SV Island Pearl II will be traveling through the Caribbean in the opposite direction, we will make some route adjustments and you can certainly count us in for hopefully at least three of these stops.
Lauren and I very much look forward to meeting you and Judy, as well as many of the good folk we have been talking with on the forum over the past 7 years.

Hi Gary, in 2012 we had a near miss lightning surge that wiped out most electronics on Ocean Pearl including the two dolphin chargers. We were cruising in Fiji. As we needed to urgently re establish battery charging I immediately contacted the dolphin HQ and they rapidly arranged transport of new chargers to Fiji and they arrived in a few days. Incredibly they told me that when dolphin chargers needed repair they paid what they called the repatriation cost (transport).to their factory workshop. Because in my case that wasn't practical (urgent time constraint) instead they gave me a massive price discount. That's the sort of service virtually unheard of and understandably I rate them very highly. I got a 50 amp and a 100 amp. Both have equalisation phases. Very happy with the charger performance. My chargers don't have an equalization mode so I have been using a DC power supply to equalize pairs (4 pairs) at 31 volts at 5 amps. This is laborious (2 day) process but forces me to carefully watch the process and monitor temps, water levels, specific gravity etc. I also isolate each pair from the boat during the process to avoid any damage to any boat items.
As I considered a new charger (just in case I couldn't fix the Dolphin 50 A), I found that I couldn't find any marine 28 volt DC, 50-60 amp output, input 220-230 volt, 50-60 hertz chargers that have an equalization mode. Blue Sea makes one but it is a max 40 Amp DC output, Mastervolt and Victron don't have any with an equalization mode (at least that I could discover in their literature). So I have two questions for the group:
1. What charger do you have that has an equalization mode?
2. When you do the equalization, how do you isolate the house bank batteries from the boat? (I know that turning off the two large red handles in the quarter-berth companionway turns off most of the power to the boat, but I wasn't certain if there are "sneak, hot battery bus" type circuits that are wired (e.g. inverters, solar panel regulators etc). The chargers do NOT go thru the large red handled shut off switches.
Your thoughts and experiences would be most welcome.

We have Mastervolt chargers and they do have have an equalization mode. By the discussion in the manual you can dicern that the equalization mode is not intended to be used very often. Below is an excerpt from from the manual:
"An equalizing charge can be necessary after very deep discharges and/or inadequate charges. This has to be carried out according to the specifications of the manufacturer of the batteries. During equalizing the batteries are brought into the gas state and is it possible that the permitted load voltages are exceeded. Therefore appropriate measures must be taken, e.g. disconnect all loads from the battery and ventilate the room. For these reasons use of the equalizing mode should only be executed by trained technical engineers. The equalizing mode can only be started when the Chargemaster is in operation and in Float. This means that the connection compartment of the Chargemaster must be opened while connected to the mains and the batteries. Take adequate measures for protection against short circuits and electrical shocks. To start the equalize mode: move DIP switch 4 to the ON position and back to the OFF position."

Island Pearl II just arrived in Caribbean early this morning from Brisbane, Australia via Asia, most Indian Ocean Islands, South Atlantic Islands and Brazil.
In Prickly Bay now, then a slow trip up the Windward then Leewards before BVI's & US BVI's etc then across to Bonaire in late May/June for Hurricane season.
Would love to participate if the dates work out, and/or say HI to any other Amel owners as we travel the Caribbean this season. If you see us anchored near you feel free to come over for a cold beer. We love Amel talk!

I think it is a great idea, our Maramu is based in Venezuela, if we get and idea of the overall plan with dates included, we would seriously consider participating. Also the cost would be an important factor, in my opinion. Thanks for promoting such an activity.

Pat,
The issue with the electric heads causing a MAS check fault is almost always the result of a leaking seal on the Jabsco "Not so Quiet" macerator pump. Seawater migrates through the seal to inside the motor causing an electric connection between either 24VDC positive or negative and the bonding wire which is connected to the motor case. This connection caused by a leak can be erratic or constant. You know that you have a macerator seal failure when you see a slight trikle of water at the base of the toilet. You might want to talk to Christophe Delhaye at Caraibes Electronic at le Marin.

Bill, As you may know I have had my zincs disappearing faster than they should and was hoping to have Amel look into it while in LeMarine. It sounds like from what you said,it’s often the electric heads. Is current finding its way from the motor into the salt water supply hose and into the sea? Would that be only when power is supplied to the motor via the switch? Or is there negative leak that is constant?

Hi Gary, Our boat came with an original owner requested, LaRochelle installed modification which included a Heart 24v DC/220 v AC inverter/charger. We have been very happy with it. It is no longer made, but Xantrex ( I believe same company, different name) does have a new 24v/220v model with equalization capabilities. Some of the tech specs are beyond me, but you could start there if future brain surgery on your charger is not successful. We did equalize our flooded cell batteries early on, but have been using AGM also with good results, although our 20 year old charger does not have a charge setting for AGM.

I'm just catching the end of the thread on insurance, and after reading Mark's email, it seemed that, being a currently covered by Pantaneous, I better start looking into different coverage (my policy renews
10/1).
I goggled y yacht insurance and was directed to Pure. I had received an unsolicitated mailing from Pure not that long ago, and sent the flier into my circular file.
Is y yacht some kind of branch of Pure, or am I on the wrong road here? There are a number of brokers near by my home in NY that are brokers listed for Pure. None of them are yacht brokers.
Due to my stem fitting issue, and some current electronics upgrades, I put my plan to slide thru the canal and head west off till next year, but the insurance coverage will need to be resolved before that.
From Mark's comment, it appears that Pantaneous will be prohibitally expensive.
I'm more concerned about liability coverage for all my vessels (5), and I don't care about the bells and whistles, so from your description, a y yacht policy may be a good way for me to go.

Interesting about insurance. I have spent the past couple of months shopping for insurance to get us through the Panama canal and across the S. Pacific. I have it narrowed down to Y-Yacht
(UK), Novamar (USA) and Top Sail (UK) – We currently have Pantaenius and it is going to be cost prohibitive for us to continue with them. If we decide to stay in the Caribbean, the Pantaenius requirements a virtually impossible to adhere to. Either way we
need to change.
When you say “Y Insurance” do you mean Y-Yacht?

We have been off-line for so long on this last 5700nm crossing from Cape Town so had not yet got time to research the ABC's.
We joined Y Insurance this year who have incredibly good rates compared to Panteanius & Velos, and also include "in water" hurricane cover in the ABC's only hence our decision to go there.
Ps...All who meet us....Please don't disown or mock us when you see our "off-pink" boat stripe and rub rail!! We remain good Amelians... and promise to fix it at the next haulout...... the painter in Durban got the "Amel 54 Dessert Sand" colour we love completely

I would like to know what you think about having an Amel Caribbean Rally in 2019.
I would be happy to spearhead it and believe I might be able to get some discounts from marinas, marine vendors, and possibly restaurants. If we get enough participants, we might even quality for Tourism Board support from places like the BVI, St. Maarten, Martinique, St. Lucia, and Grenada. I know that the Tourism Boards have participated in past rallies by supplying transportation and tours which promote their islands.
As a participant in the Amel Rendezvous in the Chesapeak, I know how much fun these can be.
This email opens it up for discussion. Let me know if you are interested and/or if you can help put this together. Many of us probably have at least one contact in the Caribbean who could help.

I would have guessed that you would be able to perform successful "surgery" on a Dolphin!😉
You're SM probably has a "always on" 24VDC bus that I have seen on all SMs. Remove the back panel (sometimes wood, sometimes leather), which is just above the back of the chart table. I seem to remember it labeled, "24 Permanent." Test it. It will be ON when the battery switches are off. Unless modified, it powers the Sailor 24-12 Converter. I say, "unless modified" because this seems to be the most common place owners and hired technicians connect things. Of course, the battery monitor is always ON.
I know that you know whether there have been any modifications to your SM because you've owned her since new. Other current owners of resale Amels should be very careful to assume that your Amel has not been modified. Any modifications should always be labeled and documented. I believe that you should never wire anything without a label near the ends of each wire, and document it. The same time applies to every hired technician. This is something that few technicians will do without your insistence.

Blue Sea makes one but it is a max 40 Amp DC output, Mastervolt and Victron don't have any with an equalization mode (at least that I could discover in their literature). So I have two questions for the group:
1. What charger do you have that has an equalization mode?
2. When you do the equalization, how do you isolate the house bank batteries from the boat?
