It's hard to believe that Amel is not using it's website to educate
the world about all their innovative features that have really set
them apart over all these years of development and refinement. And
eliminating any mention of previous models isn't a good turn, IMHO.

However the good news is that the Wayback Machine -- located at
www.archive.org -- has indexed and stored the previous www.amel.fr
websites (and virtually every other public website). Just looking at
the Sept. 28, 2007 'snapshot' you'll find the pages showing the
previous Amel models (although only the French language pages preserve
the webpage formatting). The bad news is that higher resolution photos
or documents don't seem to be available.

Hi Bill,
Put insurance in the Group search box for previous postings especially
mine No 3007. We use Pantaenius but have never claimed so cannot
confirm that they are as good as they say they are. They are not
worried about short handed sailing but were not prepared to insure US
registered boats a few years ago but may have changed that policy.

We concur with the posting on heaving to having done it in 50-60 knots
in the Bay of Biscay but we did drift backwards. It is a risky
business if near land as the boat can be moved by wind and current.
Whilst we were in the South Pacific two yachts were lost, one in Fiji
when it dragged anchor and another on South Minerva Reef when the crew
either hove to or did not watch their drift while waiting for
daylight. I assume that they did not leave enough sea room and perhaps
relied on the inaccurate charts. The owner of the one that went
aground in Fiji stripped a lot of gear off it and was going to have a
sale to reduce insurers liability but the Fijian Customs officials
told him that he would have to pay duty based on new costs before
selling so he called off the sale.

We shall be in Aukland/Opua from 12-19 January but it looks as if you
will be back in the States then?

Santorin jib drive gear box service

Now we would make the same for the jib furler gearbox.
Questions:
1) we need to remove the headstay?
2) Has anyone the jib furler gearbox scheme?

Friends of mine in the surveying and insurance adjusting business are
not too impressed with Boat US insurance. I use them since the bank
and the marina insist on us having insurance and they are low cost
providers. I think there are some better choices out there if you are
really concerned with getting quality coverage.

Surely this is obvious IF you are going to heave to 99% times out of 100 that will be because of extreme conditions and you want a rest.? Of course there are other times like arriving overnight at an anchorage that you want to enter in daylight where you might wish to heave to.? But lets say you are sailing in F6/7/8 or more then you wont have a lot of sail up you will be well reefed - with sails set for these conditions - to heave to it is just a matter of tacking without tending to the foresail and adjusting the rudder position to keep the boat at a comfortable angle to the wind and seas. Actually the same will apply to the early arrival situation you dont adjust the sails from what was previously set - except as Bill explained if you are sailing in lighter winds with all or most of the Genoa out you 'may' need to roll away some of the Genoa to ensure that it cant chaff on any part of the boat when heaved to.

Eric & John,

Let me add one thing to John Martin's explanation...Take care when
doing this with the poles rigged and hung on the rail. When the Genoa
"backwinds," it can chafe against the knuckle of the universal joint
between the short and long poles. The fix is to either remove the
pole, or to furl the Genoa enough to clear the knuckle on the pole.

I learned this the hard way.

I was thinking about getting the "Filter Boss" system to provide 2
fuel filters with quick change, pressure guage to the helm, etc.
Sounds like you essentially accomplished the same thing in your post
below. Did you check out the filter boss sytstem? And how well has
your system worked for you?

Excessive Amel shipping costs

Hello all;
I recently asked Amel to send me a headsail fairlead pulley adjuster.
The part cost 87 euro, and the shipping was 85 euro! There was no
emergency to receive this part. I find this outrageous, and wonder if
anyone has been able get Amel to ship at moreasonable rates?

chain counter display

Hello all;
I have a chain counter display that has stopped functioning properly.
Rather than showing 00, it only shows a single 0 in the left hand digit
space, and does not count up or down consistently. This does this
whether or not the chain sensor is connected, so it does not appear to
be a sensor problem. I have dismantled and disassembled the display
and cannot find any obvious problem. Suggestions?

I'm a little bit stupid, I'm Italian, I don't speak French but I had
in mind that the forum speak the same language of our boats :) so I've
post with an automatic convertitor!

You have understand my question; in fact, on my boat, the air
estractor doesn't work with the generator, it works only with the engine.
This evening I will check the green "electrical button" inside the
engine room; I hope to find them switched off…

fonctionne ET DOIT fonctionner si le générateur OU le moteur sont en
service.
