Hi Chuck, I,m a bit confused. Are you referring to the outhaul or the main furling motor. I have just removed the outhaul gearbox and motor and do not remember any plastic neck piece.
i just ordered a new LeRoy somers main furling motor and the 2 big black spacers( not really sure that’s what they are yet as I haven’t pulled it apart yet), is that what you are referring too?
Does anyone have a breakdown of the main furling motor / gearbox setup

AMEL FORUM - SHUTDOWN OF AMEL YAHOO GROUP - NEW PLATFORM

Alejandro Paquin

Dear Bill,

I wish to thank you personally for taking your valuable time and money to find a new and workable platform for the Amel Forum. This forum is extremely interesting, I´ve been a member since God know when.

The world needs more people like you, definitely.

I own “SIMPATICO” an older Maramu (1981) since 21 years ago, it is turning 38 this year, and it has gone through a lot of refurbishing in the past 6 years. The previous owner is a like a father to me so it has been in the “family” for a long time. I enjoy the discussions, participating when I can and sharing my own particular experiences. I´ve also exchanged privately with many of the members so for me, it has been a source of wisdom and good advice all along.

Thanks again and hope to meet you soon, weather, and God permitting.

Mainsail furling motor the saga continues

Chuck_Kim_Joy

Hi All,
I received my motor from Maud today. It came as just the motor. I assumed it would come with the plastic neck piece too. It did not. This is the piece that the white housing clamps onto. Someone mentioned they had one fabricated. Has anyone had one of these fabricated and have the dimensions also how is it attached to the motor glued-screwed? I do not want to disassemble my outhaul motor to measure if I don't have too.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Max Volvo RPM

ianjenkins1946 <ianjudyjenkins@hotmail.com>

Paul,

At the dock you will get more than 2,800 revs in gear because the flow of water through the Autoprop when the boat is stationary is insufficient to change the angle of the blades, so less resistance and higher revs. Glad that you found improved performance once you were under way.

Okay thanks.  I just got 2600 after 4 new injectors installed.  Stern-to at the dock, straining against stern lines, got 3300.  The Volvo mechanic says this engine is rated over 3500 max rpms but the large size of the Autoprop may be causing the lower max rpms underway.   Also the turbo may be failing.  But she definitely has more power now (was probably running on 2 cylinders before) judging by the fact that  I scared my wife and surprised myself when we left the dock because when I gave the engine the usual amount of throttle  she leapt out of the gate instead of creeping ahead.

With a max of 2600 rpms I should be able to cruise at 80% max, or 2000 rpm, right?

Hi Guys,

My boat has the same setup except for the Maxprop.

A few facts about the TDM22 is that it is rated for much higher rpm than Amel chose to use.  On my previous boat, I always got 4200+ at full power with the comparable prop.  AMEL just chose to operate the engine at a lower rpm.  This was an easy choice as our engine has a good torque curve and lower rpm results in longer life and less noise/fuel.  So we have 70+ hp instead of 82 in my previous boat.

Not much impact in my opinion.

Enjoy your boats.

Cheers,

SM2K yanmar startup issues

Hi,
I had same problems with my Eutikia SM 428_2003.
For rendom start look at red cable on start motor: the connection may be slack/oxidised. Anyway remove and fasten it. The contact MUST be perfect and steady.
For rendom shut down look at solenoid. Replace it or spry antoxidant inside from top. You have to remove the black rubber cover button. Than push it many times.
I hope that may help.

It also appears to me that google can no longer find anything posted on it so our discussions are now private amongst the owners (and the wannabes like me who you’ve let lurk here).  That’s a fantastic new feature in my mind!  Less chance for bad actors to use our personal information.

There are a host of features in the new platform that are huge improvements over Yahoo including a calendar, the ability to have sub-groups, embedding pictures in messages.  The two main benefits that I like about the new platform are:

1.  You can actually edit a post that you made after you post it.  Those of us who don't spell too good will appreciate that little detail. ;)

2.  We now have complete "ownership" of the information that is posted to the group including the messages, files, and pictures.  They can be backed up and archived offline so all this great collective Amel knowledge cannot be lost due to some corporate decision.

 Hi Paul,

Clean bottom and clean prop---2,800. That is what Amel limited this engine to. In flat water that should give you 8+ knots

Can anyone with the combo of a SM, a Volvo Penta TMD22, and an Autoprop tell me what they get for max RPMs while underway in forward gear and full throttle?

I’ve been waiting for such a move. Well done not bringing the new site into a group discussion.

We avoided the “committee” syndrome… being long winded discussions resulting in zilch.

Well done

Re: Additional solar location?

Hi Miles,

I have my entire dodger covered with flexible solar panels and I even covered a small portion of the deck between the dodger and the traveler well with panels.  I routed the wiring to a junction box inside the port side of the dodger and then ran cable from there inside the dodger to the propane storage (which I don't use as propane storage) and from there into the compartment containing the autopilot driver where I mounted the solar panel manager unit.

Works out well as i can stand on them with no problem.  Shading can be a problem if you are beating, but otherwise the panels are nicely exposed under sail.  At anchor, I use a preventer to draw the boom out to one side or the other to expose the panels.

Miles,
I have two 100W panel installed between mizzen shrouds and the main aft stay using some cheap aluminum profiles. Works for a couple of years now even with 45+ kn wind.

1 more is on top of the right side of the dodger (not yet installed when I took this picture), 2 on the starboard rails (visibible on picture) and the last two on top of my davits, totalling 670 W.
