Re: Additional solar location?
sbmesasailor
Hi Miles,
I have my entire dodger covered with flexible solar panels and I even covered a small portion of the deck between the dodger and the traveler well with panels. I routed the wiring to a junction box inside the port side of the dodger and then ran cable from there inside the dodger to the propane storage (which I don't use as propane storage) and from there into the compartment containing the autopilot driver where I mounted the solar panel manager unit. Works out well as i can stand on them with no problem. Shading can be a problem if you are beating, but otherwise the panels are nicely exposed under sail. At anchor, I use a preventer to draw the boom out to one side or the other to expose the panels. Dennis Libertad Maramu #121

@Sioned
Miles,
I have two 100W panel installed between mizzen shrouds and the main aft stay using some cheap aluminum profiles. Works for a couple of years now even with 45+ kn wind. 1 more is on top of the right side of the dodger (not yet installed when I took this picture), 2 on the starboard rails (visibible on picture) and the last two on top of my davits, totalling 670 W. New furlers on an Amel 54
Hi All,
Following the nice offer from Paul Hrabowsky (Bamar USA) I received the new EJF1 furlers a while ago and after some preparations I had the local rigger on Saint Martin replace the old ones with the EJF1 model. This took a little over a day with not too many problems. The fit was excellent after returning to my marina I could proceed with the electrical part of the job. That proved to be a bit more complicated as the new furlers have a bit more connections to them. The MEJ furlers only have a motor with a plus and minus cable. The EJF1 has a electric brake and a thermal sensor added to the party. I also ordered new Boxtron E14 boxes as the existing ones were not working anymore and the old MEJ furlers were connected to the Boxtron EM boxes. The Amel yard connected the Boxtron boxes a bit differently then intended by Bamar. The remote switch has three cables but only 2 are led to the furler. The third (power) cable is fed directly from the circuit-breaker panel in the galley. This gave me some problems hooking up the thermal sensor. Long story short it meant I added an intermediate connection box with a relay to enable the thermal sensor. Added benefit is I now have a local (to the furler) switch to operate the furlers. I also had to adapt both the E14 and the EM boxes to be able to use the connection boxes. For the E14 the change was minor. I had to add a "Vbat -" (minus) wire to the multi-connector . As this still had one pin free that was easy. The EM box was a bit more work as the box was not designed to work together with the polarized brake power cabe (the brake on the EJF1 has a "plus"and a "minus") so I had to do some rewiring and add some diodes in the EM-box. Altough the old furlers were still working fine, I must say the new one feel much more sturdy and make much less noise. In a later post I will put the old furlers up for offer in case someone is interested. A picture of the connection boxes: In situ: Schematic design added as attachment The result:

Re: New Group
Arno, Thanks for your comments. The support people were working on this yesterday and last night. Frankly, they "pushed the button" without me knowing they were going to be so quick and surprised our moderators and me...sorry about that. I think we all are going to like what we have...I see some clean-up required in re-naming photos, but we had that issue before, but Yahoo gave us no way to re-name them.🙈

Re: FW: [Amel Yacht Owners] Yahoo Amel Owners Group is shutting down today
Mark McGovern
There are a host of features in the new platform that are huge improvements over Yahoo including a calendar, the ability to have sub-groups, embedding pictures in messages. The two main benefits that I like about the new platform are:
1. You can actually edit a post that you made after you post it. Those of us who don't spell too good will appreciate that little detail. ;) 2. We now have complete "ownership" of the information that is posted to the group including the messages, files, and pictures. They can be backed up and archived offline so all this great collective Amel knowledge cannot be lost due to some corporate decision. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Re: New Group
Bill,
Thank you very much for this migration. This is really an improvement over the old Yahoo stuff. Excellent move! One small thing I would like to say about the migrarion. The mail I got to raise awareness about the move did make me think it was a phishing mail so I threw it away. I'm not sure if there is a way to make the announcement more "authentic", but the domain ".io"made me doubt the reliability of the announcement. Just my 2 cents....
