Alex,

 

On Cream Puff’s install of the same engine: The anti-siphon is installed between the raw water outlet of the heat exchanger (black hose) and the elbow (yellow and black hose). The anti-siphon is mounted so the hollow bolt vents/drains into the cockpit scuppers. I attached pictures.

The 24 volt alternator absolutely needs to be an isolated ground unit. If it is not, you end up with connections between the 24 v system, the 12 v system AND the bonding system. Very bad things will happen.

All,

Following the replacement of my headsail furlers  would like to offer the old Bamar MEJ.1 furlers for sale. At the time they came off the boat they were working and not showing any furling issues. The staysail furler was sounding quite OK when rotating but the genua furler was sounding a bit more rough. That may also be because it appears to use a slighty different (larger) motor. Both have been replaced preserving as much as possible all parts that came off including a number of spare belts that the units utilize. The set currently resides in Sint Maarten (North Caribbean). Everything sits in the crate that was used to send me the new furlers. No foils, top-swivels or Boxtron units included. Total weight of the crate approx. 70 kg.

Please let me know if you have interest in the set and what you would like to offer. Shipping costs are to be added once we know the destination.

I believe the 24 Volt alternator should  also be isolated as the whole purpose of the isolation is to prevent the house battery bank from being connected to the bonding. Recall the discussions of the 24 volt macerator toilet pumps becoming connected to the bonding due to water intrusion.

However I am also not on board and cannot give a definitive answer about that unit.

How many hours did you have on your previous engine?

With respect to the autoprop zinc, paint the heads of the screws with nail polish. This will prevent he screw heads from dissolving.

The TMD was designed for road use and then marinised whereas the D2-75 was designed as a marine engine. Neater and more accessible. No lack of power compared to the TMD22. It is marginally noisier as it is not belt driven. Wonderfully clean exhaust. I expect fuel consumption to be the same.

The secret switch used to interrupt the power to the switch board but now interrupts the power to the starter. Volvo insist  that this engine does  not need galvanic isolation  but I like the belt and braces approach of the original so will resolve that--pending that, I have fitted the Autoprop with the  zinc cap that Autoprop supply.

 

Early days, but we are very pleased.

Got word back from Dessalator that 5W40 or 10W40 would be OK. However, they also said definitely DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC OIL like ISO 68. This must be because of the style/age of our unit vs. newer SMs.

I have referenced the manual in the Files section but unfortunately it does not deal with this issue and our model. We only have an old French manual, typed on an IBM Selectric.

Apologies to the group as I should have checked with Dessalator first. It's just that they haven't been as responsive in the past and I wanted a faster answer which we normally get with the forum.

I looked into the oil requirement for a new to us Amel with a Dessalator 160, CAT 277 pump, early last year.  The CAT manual recommends an ISO 68 hydraulic oil.  I believe this is a 30 wt. oil.  I would agree with Bill Kinney that a 40 wt. oil would would also work well.  The book recommends a change every 500 hours with the ISO 68 oil or 300 hours for if other oils are used.  The manual did not specify only an ISO oil, I believe SAE oils have detergents and other modifiers added.  You can reference the manual in the Files Section > Dessalator Technical Info > CAT Pump 277 Svc Manual, p6.

I’m not certain, Barry, I think it’s 5/16” (8mm).

Acrylic might be a better choice right under the mast, it’s supposed to be a bit stronger than plexiglass.  If you’re going to abrade the surface to make it frosted, the greater likelihood of scratching won’t make a difference.

Ian,

Hello from the other side of the anchorage :)

Harmonie came to us complete with a jug of oil that was labeled with the CatPump brand, as "high pressure pump oil." Since that is now gone, I have been using regular SAE40 oil.  The logic is that the engine room on a SM is a pretty hot environment, so the slightly flatter viscosity curve of 30W40 really isn't needed.  I don't think this is a particularly severe or difficult lubrication application.

I have a scheduled change interval of once a year on that oil.  Puts me well under the manufacturer's hourly recommendation, and makes it easy to schedule.

Maintenance for our 40L/hr Dessalator high pressure pump says 0.75L 30W40 oil every 500 hours. I can't find this anywhere and was wondering if anyone is using something different that I could change to.

Volvo is right, the engine does not need isolation. BUT, the engine ground system is not isolated to protect the engine.

The C-drive needs to be connected to the Amel bonding system for corrosion control.  Unless extra ordinary measures are taken, the engine chassis is going to be electrically connected to the C-drive.  Having a full time negative ground on the engine chassis results in full time connection of the 12-Volt Negative connected to the bonding system. Having these two system interconnected  is not the way the Amel corrosion control system is designed.

The problem here is if ANY other part of the bonding system has an inadvertent connection to the 12-Volt positive, very severe, and rapid, corrosion can occur. This will not show up on the ground fault lights because those only test for a faults in the 24-Volt system.

If so mine has a 20mm ID which is the critical dimension I think along with height 

My cover and it’s spare are now cracked so I have also been hunting for the spare and struggling. I have emailed Aquafax in the uk as they apparently supply BEP marine parts but I’m not actually 100% it’s the same piece as the specs are not clear on the BEP website. 
Looks like the vital parts covers are well worth a go!

Just measured mine. I believe the Lorraine’s on the Santorin is the same size albeit a 12v version. My rubber caps are 30mm across the base and 20mm high.
