Re: Wintering in Aegean
Mohammad Shirloo
We wintered in D-Marin in Didim Turkey, Lesvos Greece, Kos Marina Greece and Gouvia Marina Corfu Greece . We found all of the marinas to be safe and friendly. However only Didim and Gouvia Marina had the facilities to lift us out of the water or space on the hard. Corfu is in the Ionian and not the Aegean, but it has many direct flights to many of the main European cities, especially outside the winter months.

Re: Volvo D2-75 Repower
Jose Venegas <josegvenegas@...>
Eric and Ian,
With respect to the autoprop zinc, I have been using plastic screws and painting with nail polish the surface of the zinc on the thin areas outside of the screw hole. The plastic screws keep good compression between the zinc and the prop and prevent seising between two metals. The painting of the zinc prevents it from falling out when those areas are prematurely worn out. Last year’s zinc was still 50% at the end of the season !

Re: ANTI SIPHON VALVE INSTALLATION - YANMAR 4JH4-HTE
Alex,
On Cream Puff’s install of the same engine: The anti-siphon is installed between the raw water outlet of the heat exchanger (black hose) and the elbow (yellow and black hose). The anti-siphon is mounted so the hollow bolt vents/drains into the cockpit scuppers. I attached pictures.
With best regards,

Bill Kinney <greatketch@...>
The 24 volt alternator absolutely needs to be an isolated ground unit. If it is not, you end up with connections between the 24 v system, the 12 v system AND the bonding system. Very bad things will happen.

Sale of (working) old furlers Amel 54
All,
Following the replacement of my headsail furlers would like to offer the old Bamar MEJ.1 furlers for sale. At the time they came off the boat they were working and not showing any furling issues. The staysail furler was sounding quite OK when rotating but the genua furler was sounding a bit more rough. That may also be because it appears to use a slighty different (larger) motor. Both have been replaced preserving as much as possible all parts that came off including a number of spare belts that the units utilize. The set currently resides in Sint Maarten (North Caribbean). Everything sits in the crate that was used to send me the new furlers. No foils, top-swivels or Boxtron units included. Total weight of the crate approx. 70 kg. Please let me know if you have interest in the set and what you would like to offer. Shipping costs are to be added once we know the destination. Kind regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Recall the discussions of the 24 volt macerator toilet pumps becoming connected to the bonding due to water intrusion. However I am also not on board and cannot give a definitive answer about that unit. How many hours did you have on your previous engine? With respect to the autoprop zinc, paint the heads of the screws with nail polish. This will prevent he screw heads from dissolving.

Hi Bill, Eric, ( and anyone else who has fitted a D2-75 )
Thanks . My guy will be working on this shortly--Pen Azen is ashore at present and I'm in London. I want to make sure that I cover every point. In addition to the senders and the starter motor should the 12v alternator also be isolated ? ( but presumably not the 24v alternator?) Any other points to consider ?

Hi Ian, Do the senders on your new engine have 2 wires on them? Temp sender, oil pressure sender, etc. ? Is one side of the starter motor attached to the block?

Hi Paul,
We have about 30 hours on our D2-75. Its a good fit. The guy who installed it originally worked with the Brit who designed the TMD22 so he knows both engines well. The TMD was designed for road use and then marinised whereas the D2-75 was designed as a marine engine. Neater and more accessible. No lack of power compared to the TMD22. It is marginally noisier as it is not belt driven. Wonderfully clean exhaust. I expect fuel consumption to be the same. The secret switch used to interrupt the power to the switch board but now interrupts the power to the starter. Volvo insist that this engine does not need galvanic isolation but I like the belt and braces approach of the original so will resolve that--pending that, I have fitted the Autoprop with the zinc cap that Autoprop supply.
Early days, but we are very pleased.

Any SMs with a Volvo D2-75 repower care to comment on their experience? Good? Problems? Power adequate? How did you handle the galvanic isolation issue?

Re: Dessalator Pump Oil
Got word back from Dessalator that 5W40 or 10W40 would be OK. However, they also said definitely DO NOT USE HYDRAULIC OIL like ISO 68. This must be because of the style/age of our unit vs. newer SMs. I have referenced the manual in the Files section but unfortunately it does not deal with this issue and our model. We only have an old French manual, typed on an IBM Selectric. Apologies to the group as I should have checked with Dessalator first. It's just that they haven't been as responsive in the past and I wanted a faster answer which we normally get with the forum. Ian & Margaret S/V Loca Lola II SM153 Exumas, Bahamas

Re: Dessalator Pump Oil
Mark & Debbie Mueller
I looked into the oil requirement for a new to us Amel with a Dessalator 160, CAT 277 pump, early last year. The CAT manual recommends an ISO 68 hydraulic oil. I believe this is a 30 wt. oil. I would agree with Bill Kinney that a 40 wt. oil would would also work well. The book recommends a change every 500 hours with the ISO 68 oil or 300 hours for if other oils are used. The manual did not specify only an ISO oil, I believe SAE oils have detergents and other modifiers added. You can reference the manual in the Files Section > Dessalator Technical Info > CAT Pump 277 Svc Manual, p6.

Acrylic might be a better choice right under the mast, it’s supposed to be a bit stronger than plexiglass. If you’re going to abrade the surface to make it frosted, the greater likelihood of scratching won’t make a difference. Kent S/V Kristy SM 243
